stages will be played from December 22, 2022 to January 5, 2023, the final
rounds, the venue for which will be announced later, will take place from
January 20 to January 31, 2023.

There will be a total of 111 matches across 11 locations (Group Stages +
Final Rounds) during the course of the tournament.

A total of 49 teams from 29 State/Union Territories have been divided into
10 groups, which will be played across 10 locations in the country in a
single-leg round-robin format in the group stage. The 10 group winners and
6 best second-placed teams will qualify for the Final Rounds.

The Final Round will be played in a knock-out format, starting from the
round of 16 stage.

AIFF Secretary General Dr. Shaji Prabakharan said, “We are coming up with
the Elite U-17 League involving different academies and clubs from more
than 30 states, which will see participation from more than 50 teams. This
would definitely help us find talent for our India U-17 team, which is
already in preparation for participating in the final rounds of AFC U-17
Asian Cup in May 2023.

“As we see it, the players, especially the youth players, didn't have the
opportunity to play in any competition during the pandemic, which is why we
have created this league, which would definitely inspire the youth,” he
said. “We plan to have a robust youth and Elite League structure going
forward. This will be announced when we come out with the roadmap for our
long term vision that could set our youth and elite development structure.

“This is just the beginning, and I'm sure the participating teams and clubs
will be inspired with this opportunity, and we will find exceptional talent
that could become future stars for India going forward.”

[Goanet] AIFF REPORT: The Hero of Santosh Trophy, who broke boundaries

2022-12-27 Thread Soumo Ghosh
The Hero of Santosh Trophy who broke boundaries

NEW DELHI: There is hardly a top player in the country who hasn’t gone
through the grind of the Hero Santosh Trophy at some stage of his career in
the last eight decades. Starting from Talimeren Ao, the first captain of
Independent India to present day icon Sunil Chhetri, all had made their
presence felt in the National Football Championship at an early age before
moving onto the next phase of footballing life.

The influence and impact of Hero Santosh Trophy, however, hasn’t remained
restricted to India – it has travelled beyond its boundaries from its very
inception. So much so, when the newly-born nation Pakistan played their
first official international tie – a friendly match against Iran – the team
was led by the redoubtable Osman Jan, the celebrated custodian, who was
actually known for his fabulous exploits in the Santosh Trophy.

Few are aware that Osman, who once guarded the citadel of Kolkata’s great
Mohammedan Sporting in the 1930s, was perhaps the first footballer to win
the Santosh Trophy for two different states. While his triumph as part of
the mighty Bengal team in the inaugural edition in 1941 didn’t come as a
surprise to any, it made people to sit up and take notice the second time
when Osman captained hosts Delhi to win the 1944 Santosh Trophy beating
all-conquering Bengal in the final.

If the old timers are to be believed, it was a fascinating battle in 1944
that saw underdogs Delhi win the prestigious National Football Championship
for the only time in history. Osman, by then, had returned to his hometown
Delhi after successful stints with Mohammedan Sporting and Aryans in
Kolkata. Having joined the Crescent Football Club in Old Delhi, he was said
to be instrumental in raising the Delhi state team that went on to beat
stat-studded Bengal 2-0 in the final. He didn’t allow any interference in
selection of the team and picked the best possible side, which included two
British citizens from the Royal Indian Air Force, then stationed in Delhi.
The move proved correct as one of them, English, scored one of the two
goals for Delhi in the final (Bhabani Banerjee was the other marksman).

The Delhi squad in 1944 was a true advertisement of unity in diversity –
the hallmark of Hero Santosh Trophy right from the beginning. In the later
years, two of the team members returned to England, some went over to
Pakistan and some left Delhi to settle elsewhere.

Osman went over to Pakistan and in October 1950, when the Pakistan National
Team made their first ever tour of Iran and Iraq, he was made the captain.
After his death, a tournament in his memory was started in Karachi.

[Goanet] HERO I-LEAGUE FEATURE: Sankarlal Chakraborty relying on youth to salvage Sudeva Delhi's campaign

2022-12-27 Thread Soumo Ghosh
*Sankarlal Chakraborty relying on youth to salvage Sudeva Delhi's campaign*

*Akhil RawatAIFF Media Team*

*NEW DELHI:* With no points in the first seven matches and the threat of
relegation increasing with every passing week, Sudeva Delhi FC desperately
required a quick turnaround to salvage their Hero I-League season. In
mid-December, Japanese head coach Atsushi Nakamura was let go and in came
Sankarlal Chakraborty, as the club placed its faith in a renowned Indian
name.

The former Mohun Bagan head coach had an instant impact as Sudeva Delhi
opened their account for the season with a 1-1 draw against Mohammedan
Sporting in their last match before the winter break. Although conceding an
injury-time equaliser denied the capital side all three points, Chakraborty
was reasonably pleased with his team's performance, where they netted just
their fourth goal of the campaign.

Interestingly, this is the third time Chakraborty has taken over a club
mid-season. After learning his trade as Sanjoy Sen's assistant coach at
Mohun Bagan for three seasons from 2014-15 to 2016-17 (winning the Hero
I-League title in the first season), he was promoted to head coach in the
middle of the 2017-18 campaign and led the Mariners to a third-place
finish. Later that year, he won his first piece of silverware – the
Calcutta Football League – as Mohun Bagan emerged unbeaten champion.

Chakraborty's last Hero I-League assignment came in 2020-21 with Mohammedan
Sporting. He actually began the season as the club's technical director
before being named head coach for the last seven matches, where he helped
the Black and White Brigade qualify for the championship stage.

"After that, I took a break from coaching to fully concentrate on my
Pro-Diploma. Just when I completed the course, Sudeva Delhi co-owner Anuj
Gupta, who is also a close friend of mine, approached me for the head coach
position at the club," said Chakraborty.

"I took my time, watched some videos and learned about the players. I was
impressed with how youngsters formed the majority of the squad. Coaching a
team filled with young Indians was a challenge that attracted me, and it
made me return to the Hero I-League dugout with Sudeva Delhi," he added.

The winter break has come at the right time for Sudeva Delhi, giving
Chakraborty a sort of mini pre-season to plan his strategy for the new
year. "I've been here for only over a week now, and I'm still getting to
know the players. I'm also aware that reinforcements to the squad are an
urgent requirement. We are in talks with a few players and are awaiting
their arrival at the club. We hope they can join us as soon as possible, so
we can come back strong after the break."

In their short history, Sudeva Delhi FC have been known to promote young
Indian talent, as evidenced by their all-Indian squads in the previous two
Hero I-League seasons. Replicating that, Chakraborty named an entirely
domestic line-up in his first match in charge with an average age of just
22 years, the lowest in the league this season. "As an Indian, I'm strongly
in favour of giving youth chances in big games, which will ultimately
benefit Indian Football. We have plenty of youngsters in the team along
with a few senior and mature players. The right mix of youth and experience
is always helpful," he stated.

Right now, Sudeva Delhi are at the foot of the table, nine points away from
safety, with just 14 matches left to play. And while ensuring Hero I-League
football for next season is a big ask, it is not the only ask, according to
Chakraborty. "Of course, avoiding relegation is our prime objective for the
remainder of the season. But we also cannot overlook the development of
young players, which is central to the philosophy of Sudeva Delhi," he
affirmed.

[Goanet] AIFF STRATEGIC ROADMAP: ‘We dream of reviving the glory days of Indian Football,’ says Kalyan Chaubey at launch of 'Vision 2047'

2023-01-08 Thread Soumo Ghosh
been proposed, which will see players across different
age groups play a minimum of 14 matches. The Federation will ensure that a
minimum of 20 states implement the new women’s youth structures by 2027.

On the men’s side, the current strategic plan will ensure the creation of a
three-tier national league pyramid with 40 teams. The Hero Indian Super
League and Hero I-League will boast of 14 teams each while the Hero
I-League 2nd Division will consist of 12 teams. A state championship
structure will see city and district leagues feed into the state
championships. A revamped men’s youth league structure will see the local
state youth league and elite youth leagues will run simultaneously. Clubs
and academies will participate in both with the winners of the state youth
leagues qualifying for the Elite youth league.

One of the cornerstones of the roadmap is the creation of a national
playing philosophy, which will be developed over time after consultation,
observation and exploration. Subsequently, the ‘Coach Education Program’
structure will be developed in line with our ‘Indian National Football
Philosophy’. The improvement of footballing quality at all levels of the
ecosystem demands better coaching and with that in mind, the roadmap
targets creating 50,000 active coaches — almost 4,500 with a minimum AIFF C
License — across the country.

The Federation observed that the talent development ecosystem is currently
informal, with clubs and Federation bodies all largely working in silos
without a systematic or uniform approach. The AIFF proposes to change this
by creating a data driven scouting structure from the Elite Youth League
System for its National Teams. Clubs will drive talent identification at
grassroots unto the Elite Youth structure.

An increased focus will be put on utilising the FIFA windows across age
groups to provide exposure to players in the national teams, with mega
camps (two or more age groups) scheduled at least twice a year.
Qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cups for Both Men and Women on merit
is a key part of the agenda.

Infrastructure is key to achieving many long-term goals. The Federation has
observed that there has, over the past decades, been a reduction in
playgrounds in urban areas. Many top professional clubs do not yet own
football infrastructure. The Federation plans to conduct a pan-India
infrastructure census by 2025.

Subsequently, it will put in place policy interventions that will
incentivise government authorities, football clubs, corporates, and private
investors to invest in infrastructure. A grading and licensing criteria
will be in place by 2024, and a mega football park will be formalised by
2026. The AIFF National Centre of Excellence will be fully functional by
2026.

A key focus of the Strategic Roadmap, Dr Prabhakaran said, is on
“increasing the commercial viability by creating economic value for all our
stakeholders, especially players.” The Federation will create
effective feedback
mechanisms that will ensure it is among the best government sports
organisations in the country. The roadmap also lists creation of new assets
in football, futsal and beach soccer to engage sponsors and diversify
target audiences to broaden the reach of Indian Football.

CHENNAI: Sonali Soren is certainly not a showstopper, who will force people
to take a break and wait eagerly to follow her next movement. She is a
simple young girl with a sweet and innocent smile – never too eager to
start a conversation unless required.

Yet, there is something about this girl, who hails from the Purba Bardhaman
district in West Bengal, that makes her different from most others of her
age. Behind her shy look and timid approach, there is a kind of glistening
determination in her eyes that clearly marks her as a very special person
unmistakably dissimilar to an average girl of her age.

Sonali wasn’t born with a silver spoon; her journey in life had never been
a smooth one. Having been born in a tribal family, that always struggled to
put enough food on the table, Sonali was not expected to progress much in
life. Yet, the teenaged midfielder, today, is in the National camp in
Chennai for the India U-20 Women’s Team which is currently preparing for
the upcoming SAFF U-20 Women's Championship to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh
from February 3-9, 2023.

Soren has a fascinating tale to tell. She started playing football at the
age of eight and instantly became a victim of ridicule and taunt as a girl
was not supposed to play football in the society she had been brought up
in. But nothing could deter her from achieving her goal; she was the first
woman footballer from her tribe in the district to make it to the India
Under-17 National Women’s Team camp back in 2019.

“When I started playing football, people used to talk a lot behind my back.
But I was determined and never gave them undue importance. I knew I had to
work hard to achieve my target and continued making all efforts to play and
improve as a footballer.

“Well, it wasn’t easy. My father is a daily wager and my mother is a
teacher. They had to go the distance day in day out so that I could reach
where I am today. I will have to play good football for two reasons. First,
I want to make my parents proud of me. And most importantly, I want to
reach a level, which will break the taboo and encourage girls from my tribe
to take up football,” said Sonali.

“Being in the camp gives me a lot of happiness. The food, the training,
everything is so new and fresh to me. Also, we are getting trained under
two top class coaches. It gives me the extra boost to perform better in
each training session,” Sonali said.

While Sonali had her ways to deal with life’s difficulties, forward Tania
Kanti’s journey to the National camp wasn’t easy either. She lives in the
Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, and started playing when she was
nine-year-old. She was the only girl in her village to train and practice
with the boys and naturally became the target of all those people with
age-old gender bias, who still believe football is not meant to be played
by girls.

“I started playing with the boys and did not have any knowledge of
football, but gradually started enjoying it. When the U-17 trials happened,
I never thought I would get selected but it was stopped because of
Covid-19, and my dream was shattered. But I never stopped training. I even
used to train at my home because I knew one day my hard work will produce
results. And now after two long years, I got the opportunity to prove
myself. I will not leave any room for mistakes and will work hard to make a
mark and win the tournament.”

In the midst of all these, the U-20 girls are also having the experience of
being with the Senior Women’s National Team. They watch their seniors train
at the same ground and get an opportunity to mingle with them at the dinner
table or while coming back from the training session.

“It’s amazing to watch our seniors train – their dribbling skills, passing
abilities and speed are something I want to learn and emulate. I really
enjoy the atmosphere here in the camp. Football has given me the confidence
to face people. I thank everyone – the people who organise this camp, my
coaches, friends, and staff who support us every day so that we can live
the life we want to,” Tania said.

*CHENNAI: *Hardly anyone was surprised when Sunita Munda was called for the
National camp for the AFC U-14 regional championship in 2016. Even before
turning 14, Munda had proved to be a remarkable talent on the pitch,
possessing all the necessary skills to blossom into a fine striker. Her
coaches never doubted her ability.

However, the girl from Jonha village in Jharkhand had one ‘drawback’. As a
prolific goalscorer, Sunita knew how to beat a defensive trap or catch the
rival goalkeeper on the wrong foot, but had no idea about the importance of
a passport. When the team management asked her to submit her passport
Sunita looked at them blankly.

“To be honest, I did not know what a passport meant back then,” Sunita told
the-aiff.com on Friday, January 27, 2023. “I went back home from the camp
to apply and get my passport and flew to Tajikistan to play in the AFC U-14
Regional Championship.”

“I have learnt new things while staying in different camps. Hailing from
remote villages, many of us were unaware of some basic facilities needed to
play football, like boots, quality footballs, regular physical exercises,
and even proper food. Slowly we learned about these things after attending
the camps and learnt their importance,” she said.

Despite being oblivious to urban staples, Sunita was armed with an
advantage few girls her age receive in the country — the full backing of
her family to pursue her love for football.

Her father, who played the game in his youth, took the her to the field
when she was marking her nascent steps in tjr game. He had never made it to
the professional level but wanted his daughter to fulfill his dreams.

“I learnt the fundamentals from him. Now I want him to see me wearing the
senior National team colours someday. That is something I have to do to
fulfill my father’s dream,” said Sunita.

“I getting this far wasn’t easy for me, but I have a family who have
supported me throughout,” she said. “It is what has enabled me to become a
National team footballer.”

Sunita has proved to be a key player for the team ever since joining the
national setup in 2016 scoring goals across various age group competitions.
The 19-year-old forward also played a key role for the Indian Arrows in the
Indian Women’s League (IWL) last year.

A vital force of the Young Tigresses team, she is currently preparing with
them at the Home Games Sports Arena in Chennai for the forthcoming SAFF
U-20 Championship, to be played in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from February 3–9,
2023.

It is evident, upon observation that Sunita has an old head on young
shoulders. When discussing her goals, she speaks with maturity and calm.
“To score goals for the country is the best thing a striker can do and it
always makes the player feel special. When I got to know that I won’t be a
part of the U-17 Women’s World Cup squad, I felt disappointed but to find
my friends from the state, Astam and Nitu in the team, made me feel proud.
And now they are my teammates,” Sunita says, smiling.

The U-20 Women’s and Senior Women’s National teams are training under
Maymol Rocky and Thomas Dennerby, respectively, at Chennai and both coaches
are keeping a close watch on the players and their training for the
upcoming tournaments.

Sunita believes the opportunity to train under these two coaches has helped
her immensely. “Thomas sir and Maymol Ma’am help us a lot everyday. They
have taught us some important things like the correct positioning of a
player in different situations, the different attacking skills a striker
should have etc. I am trying to keep my focus and train hard as winning
SAFF U-20 in Dhaka next month is everyone’s prime target right now.”

ar the ball under some pressure, but hit it
straight at Amisha; Chand got on the rebound and put it into an empty net.

Nepal kept troubling the Indian midfield, and were soon awarded a penalty
after Astam Oraon was deemed to have made a dangerous tackle inside the box
in the 69th minute. Captain Preeti Rai stepped up to the spot and slammed
it home despite the fact that Anshika had dived in the correct direction.

With a little under 15 minutes of regulation time left on the clock,
Shilky’s long ball into the Nepal box created some tension as Kajol tried
to control it, but Nepal keeper Kabita stepped out and brought it under her
control.

Amisha Karki secured the win for Nepal with just a minute of regulation
time left, when she tapped in a low cross by Preeti Rai, to make the score
3-1 in Nepal’s favour.

India Head Coach Maymol Rocky said after the match, “It’s quite sad that we
started well, but we went lower and lower. Nepal got a penalty, which was
of course not good for us, and then the girls started slowing down.
Overall, we played well in the tournament, but we probably could not make
it to the final, which was the saddest part for us.”

*TRAU, Gokulam Kerala aim to finish on a high*

* IMPHAL*: It’s a battle between third and fifth in the Hero I-League as
TRAU FC take on Gokulam Kerala FC at the Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal on
Thursday, March 2, 2023.

With just three matches to go and the difference with table-toppers
RoundGlass Punjab already into double figures, Gokulam Kerala’s dreams of
winning the Hero I-League title three times in a row are over.

However, coach Anthony Andrew is just looking to end on a high. “The
atmosphere in the dressing room is good as we have picked up six points in
the last two matches. So we just want to win these last three matches and
finish on a good note,” he said at the pre-match press conference on
Wednesday.

“It’s TRAU’s home game and they lost the last match, so I’m sure they’ll
come hard at us,” he added.

They have never played badly in this season of the I-League but dropped
points at crucial junctures against lowly-placed teams like Mumbai Kenkre
and Mohammedan Sporting. That has hurt their cause. One of the main reasons
behind that has been their tendency to waste scoring opportunities. Sergio
Mendigutxia has not been as accurate as he would like to be. Nor have been
Eldar Moldozhunusov or Indian forwards VS Sreekuttan, Rahul Raju et al.
However, since losing to Mohammedan Sporting in Kolkata on January 12,
Gokulam have won two matches on the trot, scoring six goals. Both Mendi and
Raju scored in the last match against Aizawl FC. That should give them some
confidence against TRAU.

When these two teams first met this season, TRAU had won 2-1 in a
hard-fought match. All the goals had come in the second half. With a shrewd
coach like Leimapokpam Nandakumar Singh at the helm, TRAU could once again
prove a tough nut to crack. TRAU do not have much to gain from the
remaining matches. But the grit and exuberance of players like Manash
Protim Gogoi, Salam Ranjan Singh, Sagolsem Bikash Singh, Salam Johnson
Singh hardly need an occasion to shine. With the services of foreigners
like Komron Tursunov and Fernandinho, TRAU can still make life difficult
for Gokulam.

TRAU coach Nandakumar Singh said, “I’m satisfied with how the boys have
responded. I hope they’ll once again give hundred per cent tomorrow.”

The match will be telecast live on Eurosport, DD Sports and Discovery Plus
OTT platform from 7 pm.
