*RESONANCE OF THE FEMALE VOICE: WOMANISM AND THE CHURCH IN PORTUGUESE GOA*

*By Dr. Sushila Sawant Mendes*

*Abstract from the Speaker*

In the pre-Portuguese period, the female voice was stifled with the
then-existing social norms of child marriage, sati, polygamy, dowry,
*patnidharma,* enforcement of strict widowhood, and other systemic denials:
such as education, ownership of property, divorce, and widow marriage.

The Portuguese administration and the Church in particular did much in the
resonance of the female voice. Polygamy and sati were prohibited and
divorce was permitted. There was free movement of women in society, unlike
their Hindu counterparts. Helpless women took refuge in the charitable
institutions of the church. Women could now inherit property. The life of a
Catholic widow was much more humane. The Church today encourages Small
Christian Communities whereby it gently enters into the domain of family
and community service. This study analyses the role of a pro-active Church,
within the framework of a colonial and patriarchal Goan society.

*About the author/speaker:* Prof. Sushila Sawant Mendes is the author of
the book ‘Luis de Menezes Braganza: Nationalism, Secularism and
Free-thought in Portuguese Goa’. She has worked as the Head of the
Department of History at Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce,
Quepem for 31 years. Prof. Mendes has also served as Officiating Principal,
Vice-Principal, and the In-charge of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of
the College. She has headed the Steering Committee for National
Accreditation and Assessment of the Quepem College which has since been
accredited with an ‘A’ grade.

She presents research papers regularly at State, National, and
International Conferences many of which have found a place in books on the
history of Goa. Dr. Mendes is a trustee of the Silver Star Appeal, a
foundation devoted to the awareness of diabetics. She has recently been
awarded the State Teachers Award for Excellence in Higher Education for
2020-21.

*THE STORY OF THE BOOK IN GOA:*

*From the 16th Century to the Present times.*

By Frederick Noronha

Goa was home to the first-ever Gutenberg-style printing press in Asia. But,
over the centuries, Goa seems to have lost track of the work that had been
done, and has been producing few books itself.

Asia's first press reached here accidentally in 1556, via the Jesuits. This
does not imply that the press played only a religious role. So, what was
its impact of the early presses at Old Goa, Margao and Rachol?

In what way did this influence Goan writing of the twentieth-century? Can
the book be a tool to understand the complex history of Goa, its
relationship with the outside world, and the region's significant but
little-understood diaspora?

You might be surprised by what emerges from the story of the book in
Goa

*(In)Visible Skin: The Architectural History of the Basilica of Bom Jesus*

By *Vishvesh Kandolkar*

The next exposition of St. Francis Xavier’s relics to be held in 2024 will
mark 400 years since the transfer of the saint’s body to the Basilica of
Bom Jesus. The church, built exclusively for the purpose of memorialising
the relics, was constructed between 1594-1605 and has been part of the
living heritage of Goans for four centuries. The recent outrage in Goa
regarding the Archaeological Survey of India’s neglect of Bom Jesus has
raised many questions. One such pressing issue is about the church’s ‘look.’

While the current generation of Goans has grown accustomed to seeing the
Basilica’s exposed laterite walls, this is not the way the building was
designed, nor indeed the way it looked until about 60 years ago. Until
then, the church’s exterior was protected by plaster, as it had been from
the time it received the remains of the saint.

However, only in the 1950s, the famous restorer from Portugal, Baltazar da
Silva Castro, brought about the dramatic transformation of the external
appearance of the Basilica at the behest of António de Oliveira de Salazar.
The misguided restoration was part of an attempt to age monuments, in an
effort to proclaim the antiquity of the Portuguese Empire during the
decolonial era.

Although re-plastering the building’s surface would increase its life
expectancy, the Basilica continues to remain unplastered. Unfortunately,
people have been fed a particular (mis)representation of the monument’s
appearance in the contemporary moment. The present talk will contribute to
contemporary debates about the monument and issues related to its
conservation. Such efforts are necessary to ensure that the Bom Jesus
Basilica will, as Goans hope, continue to stand as a monument to their
saint for centuries to come.

*WHAT CAN GOA LEARN FROM THE EFFORTS OF INDIGENOUS FARMERS TO NURTURE
AGRO-BIODIVERSITY IN LAOS? (S.E. Asia)*

By Andrea Rodericks

The northern uplands in Laos have long been recognized for their rich
agro-biodiversity. Home to globally important species of animals, plants,
and micro-organisms, this agro-biodiversity is the legacy of indigenous
farmers’ agricultural knowledge and practices passed down over
generations. However,
government policy and pressure to modernize challenged farmers to change some
of their practices. How did farmers in the region navigate this transition?
And, what can we learn from their journey? This presentation is based on
the most recently published book by the speaker, entitled: “*Living
Landscapes: Embracing agro-biodiversity in Northern Laos*.” (Which may be
downloaded here

.)

Drawing on the stories of farmers from northern Laos and the principles she
observed in her interactions with them, the speaker will reflect on the
relevance these principles may have for the current challenges we face in
many parts of the world, including Goa. Through the course of her
presentation, she will also reflect on her writing process and various
choices she made in telling the story of indigenous farmers and their
vision of the future.

*Over the past three decades working on development challenges and
opportunities around the world, Andrea Rodericks has been increasingly
drawn to exploring the complexity of these issues and the behavioral,
social, political, and institutional forces that shape them. She currently
works independently with various development organizations and social
movements. She enjoys applying principles from the natural world in her
work and play.*

*Andrea grew up in New Delhi. She has a Bachelors degree in Economics from
Delhi University and a Masters degree in Public Policy from the Princeton
School of Public and International Affairs. She currently divides her time
between Goa in India and Atlanta in the US, and may be reached at *

An introduction to

Goan Hindu Iconography

*By Dr. Rohit Phalgaonkar*

Every Hindu sculpture has a specific description. They are carved or cast
according to this description. It provides the key identifying features of
these sculptures. These include poses called aasanas, weapons called
aayudhs, hand gestures called mudraas, hairdos, crowns etc. This is
entirely based on ancient scriptures. This study is termed as iconography
while the texts which describe them are called iconographical texts.
Throughout India these texts were followed while making any sculpture. Goa
was no exception. Hence even when fragmentary remains of a sculpture are
found, the sculpture can be identified based on these attributes. The
lecture aims to understand the layout and formation of Hindu sculptures
with a specific reference to Goa.

*Dr. Rohit Ramakant Phalgaonkar* is an avid enthusiast of Ancient Indian
History. He was awarded a Ph.D. in History from Savitribai Phule
University, Pune in 2015. The topic of his thesis was, “*The History of
Goa’s Religion-Cultural Past: A Study based on Iconography (AD 4 –AD 1600*)”
He is much sought after for lectures on Ancient Indian History,
Archaeology, Culture etc. Dr. Rohit is also known to have revived interest
in cultural dances, like the *Dhallo* and in the traditional *Kunbi* Sari.
His upcoming book titled ‘Goan bronzes’ has been approved for publication
by the Department of Art & Culture of Goa and is said to be one of the only
works of its kind in Goa which concentrates on Goa's brass and bronze
sculptures.

*Rival Mission, Rival Science?*

*Jesuits and Pietists in the 17th-18th c. South India*

*By Prof. Dr. Ines **Ž**upanov*

Two European missionary teams, one Catholic and the other Protestant,
encountered each other in the Tamil country in the first decade of the
eighteenth century. They acted and thought that their goals were
irreconcilable, even if the Protestants in Tranquebar admitted that the
Catholic Jesuit proselytism in the region had been efficient as “*preparatio
evangelicae*” for the Protestant mission. Jesuits and Pietists were not
only rivals, they also collaborated, uneasily and unequally, in collecting,
processing and disseminating knowledge. Missionary linguistic and
medico-botanical expertise was considered an indispensable proselytizing
tool, in addition to showcasing their “scientific” achievements, admired
and envied in Europe. Both Pietists and Jesuits of this period were
fighting the early Enlightenment atheists, while feeding them the materials
from the missions. Both missionary groups were also victims of the
Enlightenment historiography.

This lecture is an exploratory effort at connecting historiographies and
histories of the missionary agents that have for long been considered in
watertight compartments created by their hagiographers or detractors. My
aim is to open a dialogue between these missionary experiences and work out
visible and invisible links between the Pietists and Jesuits in South India
during the early eighteenth century.

[Goanet] Fwd: History Hour Movie Screening on 2nd May 2019

2019-04-29 Thread XCHR Info
Xavier Centre of Historical Research Cordially invites you to a *History
Hour Movie Screening Presentation followed by a Discussion *on

*#UNFAIR – by Wency Mendes (52 mins)*

the interconnectedness of stories from: skin, colour, race, caste

https://unfairweb.wordpress.com

*Synopsis*:

*Skin is foremost in gathering, processing and assimilating knowledge for
the body. All forms and acts of **prejudice** and discrimination arising
from biases of skin - are events of violence that deconstruct the body and
the processes of knowledge making that discontinues learning, evolution and
growth.*

In India we as a society conflate prejudices and discriminations concerning
skin, color, race and caste - despite denial from the state on various
platforms. Through this film we engage in dialogue with the “*African*”
diaspora here in India, as well as diverse individuals from various
backgrounds, to understand what constructs - the images, thoughts and
ideas. We seek to bring under the lens – ‘blackness’ in ‘brown’ spaces.

In doing so, we scrutinize the construct of beauty and its practices in
Indian society and dissemination through various media. While we highlight
the socio-cultural aspects of ‘race theory’ we examine its construct and
further in relation to the constructed ‘biological body’. We discuss with
dermatologists how the body, skin and its color emerge through
epidemiology, ecology, environment and climate. We meet genetic scientists
who share their knowledge through anthropological surveys of the ‘*Siddhi*’
community. They discuss their findings about the origins of man, dispelling
race myths and proposing a probable history that dates back to 60,000
years. We further trace the sharing and intermingling of culture, arts and
music between the African continent and the Indian subcontinent since 4C
BCE (recorded history). Our intent is to 'screen' learnings from
interactions between the different and divergent cultures that emerge.

Today, as we witness an increased spate of violence based on racial
prejudices and discriminations across the country. We believe there is an
urgent need to reveal and dispel popular myths, racial stereotypes and
public justifications for ‘other’ dialogues and conversations to emerge.

[Goanet] HISTORY HOUR AT XCHR

XAVIER CENTRE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH

Cordially invites you to a *History Hour Presentation followed by a
Discussion *on

*Down the Rabbit Hole:*

*Research Adventures in Malawi and Goa*

*By Ms. Debra Nicholson (Writer, USA)*

When a talking rabbit runs by you, you have a few options: attribute the
experience to an overactive imagination; or, suppose it is a vision meant
for someone else; or, follow it down the rabbit hole. When fiction writer
Debra Nicholson unexpectedly encounters a relatively unknown story about *Goans
in Malawi, Africa,* she does not hesitate; she jumps.

Since 2016, her pursuit of this story has taken her from Bowling Green,
Ohio, USA, to Canada, to London, to Malawi, and to Goa, and, in March of
this year, she will continue on to Portugal. While in Goa she would love to
meet Malawian and other East African Goans.

*About the speaker:*

*Debra Nicholson* (debra.k.nichol...@gmail.com) earned a Master of Fine
Arts in Creative Writing – Fiction from Bowling Green State University
(BGSU), Ohio, in 2008, and a Master of English Literature and Textual
Studies as well as a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from the same
institution in 2010. Since then, she has devoted her energies to the
“writing life;” to intellectual pursuits at BGSU through graduate-level
courses on topics such as migration, racism, and Islamophobia; to
international travel; to volunteering for civic and religious
organizations; and to ballroom dance. Previously, she raised three children
as a single mother.

In 2014, she traveled to India for the first time and was captivated by the
indescribable onslaught of sensory, emotional, spiritual, mental, and
intellectual challenges of this amazing country. She has returned every
year since that time and plans many more trips in the future.

[Goanet] GOA HISTORY QUIZ COMPETITION 16th September 2016

2016-09-14 Thread XCHR Info
*Goa History Quiz Competition*

For the last five years, the Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR)
has been organizing ‘Goa History Quiz Inter-School Competition’. Given that
very little of Goan history is taught in the schools, this quiz is an
innovative attempt to make students delve into the Pre-Portuguese,
Portuguese and post-liberation periods of our history. The quiz master is
Mr. Rajiv D’Silva from Sunday Evening Quiz Club.
This year the quiz is being held in collaboration with the GOA BOARD OF
SECONDARY & HIGHER SECONDARY EDUCATION in 2 phases. The preliminary written
round will be held on Friday, 16th September 2016 at 9.30 am. Students from
South Goa will answer this round at Loyola High School, Margao, while
students from North Goa will do it at XCHR, Porvorim. The results of the
preliminary round will be declared on our website www.xchr.in

and on our Facebook page on 19th September 2016. Twelve teams each will be
selected on merit from South Goa and North Goa respectively and these
twenty four teams will participate in the final round on Saturday, 24th
September, at 9.00 am at XCHR, Porvorim. The entry forms have been sent to
all the schools by email and duly completed entries should reach XCHR
latest by 14th September2016.

*Haidar Ali, Tipu Sultan, Goa, *

Bio-data: Mr. Alan Machado, an Engineer by profession, has worked in India,
UK and Australia. He has recently published SLAVES OF SULTANS, a history of
conversions in Goa, migration of Goan Christians to Kanara, and their
captivity under Tipu Sultan. His previous books include a history of the
Mangalorean community (SARASVATI'S CHILDREN) and a novel (SHADES WITHIN
SHADOWS).

*Synopsis:* Haidar Ali’s and Tipu Sultan’s policy towards Goa and their
Kanara Christian subjects were dramatically different. Haidar kept his
channels to Goa open as a means of obtaining supplies and expertise from
Goa to build up his army and navy. Goa depended on Kanara’s rice and
placated Haidar with limited compliance of his requests. The English
capture of Mangalore in 1768 resulted in a setback in Haidar-Christian
relations for a while.

Tipu’s policy toward Goa and his Christain subjects was very different, and
resulted in the Captivity. Christians, Konkani, Tamil, and Kannada
speaking, throughout the *sultanat-i-khudadad* were deported to
Srirangapatna, and deprived of their right to live as Christians. Many
superficial and biased reasons have been offered for this. This
presentation will offer a more plausible explanation for Tipu’s antagonism
towards Christians, which arose in his effort to establish his legitimacy
to rule his *sultanat-i-khudadad*, the ‘God-given state’.

The Charism of Karuna: Life Story of Sister Karuna Mary Braganza brings you
a remarkably vivid picture of the life of one of our most inspiring
revolutionaries and leaders in education, Sr. Karuna Mary Braganza, the
first Indian Principal of Bombay’s famed Sophia College. It covers the
personal and spiritual journey of Sr. Braganza, describing the eco-social
environment of her childhood in Bandra, family events, school days, the
foundations of her spiritual vocation, college days in St. Xavier’s,
formation in RSCJ communities in England and Rome, and her dynamic
leadership of Sophia College. We learn how Sr. Karuna integrated the
charism of the Order with reading the signs of the times in post-colonial
India. The book describes how she radicalised education in India and Asia,
and covers her work of social transformation in the tribal belt of
Jharkhand, her stint with water-harvesting in rural Maharashtra, her
motivation of government school teachers, and much more.

The Charism of Karuna: Life Story of Sister Karuna Mary Braganza is a first
of its kind, using concepts from the discipline of Transactional Analysis
such as life-script, early childhood decisions and Cultural Parent to
analyse psychological dynamics, family situations, local scenarios and the
expectations of good behaviour placed on women in religious orders. Using
the tool of life-story, the book will not only transport you into the life
and times of Sr. Mary Braganza, but also provide a real and palpable feel
of her geo-spatial contexts. Reading the theatrical dialogues in the book
will surely make you nostalgic about Sophia, as you recall its sights and
sounds, its dramatics and social activism.
