Cuncolim also rocked by land scam as property of local resident sold
to migrant by crooks having political connections and by bribing
government officials
A similar case has happened in the property to my friend from
Sanvorcotto Cuncolim. Their ancestral property from their mother side
has passed into the hands of some crooks. The property is in Vagzuair,
Pairaband opp Cuncolim police station.
They registered a police complain at the Cuncolim municipal council
and also at the police station, the Cuncolim police has since told
them since the forgery took place in Margao the complain should be
registered with the Fatorda police station.
Nothing has come out of it, the Cuncolim municipal staff is sleeping
over it and also the police investigation is moving at a snail pace.
Now the only course of action available to them is to knock the court
doors, but what about people who d0 not have the money to fight such
cases.
My friends investigation is ongoing to find out the bigger truth and
the people behind the scam.
They told me that a few influential people from Cuncolim are part of
the scandal although nothing is in black and white yet.
The family has applied for documents through RTI to get to the root of
the scandal.
That also involves a lot of money, paper work and time.

[Goanet] Cabo De Rama'fort built by Soonda rulers in Goa faces dangers

Cabo De Rama'fort built by Soonda rulers in Goa faces dangers Recently
the Cabo De Rama fort walls have collapsed due to monsoons, and our
very own Heritage activists Prajal Sakhardande Jorson Fernandes Heta
Pandit Khabir Moraes are urging our government to restore the
character and texture of the fort. According to a belief, during their
14 years of exile, Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshmana, all
resided here. It is how the fort got its name. But then the local
Soonda rulers built the fort, who used to command from here. Thus, all
this makes it be a historically notable monument in India. 'Cabo De
Rama' is a beautiful and historical fort on the cape of Canacona
taluka. This fort is witness to the ruthless battles fought between
the Soonda kings and the Portuguese. ... The Portuguese named it Cabo
De Rama after the name the Soonda rulers had given it. Cabo means cape
in Portuguese. There is the small 500 meter long Cabo de Rama beach
just below the fort. It was constructed by the local Soonda rulers,
who ruled from here. But the Portuguese took it over after their
arrival in Goa by defeating the local kings. That was in 1763.
Presently the Cabo de Rama Fort is in ruins, but the bridge found at
the entrance, which is an engineering wonder, stood the test of time.
One can still see several eye-catching displays depicting the glory of
the past here. Visitors can notice the iron bastions along with large
cannons placed at that time to stop driving sea enemies. In fact, the
year of manufacture is also engraved on these cannons. You will see a
watchtower toward the right, which acted as a guard for the coastline
back then. You will also find two ponds within the fort; one of which
contains warm water and the other, cold water. The marvelous ancient
ponds here are a representation of a Hindu architecture of the Soonda
Kings era. The Soonda rulers probably used it for bathing and special
ceremonies. Further, you get to see ruins of some buildings that are
considered to be army quarters. Also, the blackened fortitude and
white structure of the church are at striking contrast to each other
that attract many eyes. The Portuguese also built command posts,
military barracks, 21 canons, and quarters for office purposes. The
fort spreads across 180,000 sq.m. and is constructed with laterite
rock. But after the arrival of Portuguese in Goa in 1763, they
conquered it by winning over the local kings. They were fascinated by
the large cape as it boasted the stunning landscape of the coastline
as well as the Arabian Sea. Soon, the Portuguese rulers carried out
restoration work on the Cabo de Rama Fort to modernize it and make it
more notable. They further used it as a military base and as a prison
after a while. As usual, what Portuguese were recognized for, they
also created a church dedicated to St. Anthony within the fort
premises. Cabo de Rama Fort or beach can be reached via NH66 Highway
by public transport, taxi or a rented vehicle. The road ends near the
Fort entrance, and from there one can walk to the fortress or beach.

[Goanet] Goa Sudharop sets up paddy cultivation platform for Sarzora footballers & villagers

2021-07-05 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Goa Sudharop sets up paddy cultivation platform for Sarzora
footballers & villagers
Sarzora, South Goa India: A farming revolution is taking place quietly
away from the media spotlight in the sleepy village of Sarzora.
Leading from the front are active seamen, young footballers and an NGO
- and Goa Sudharop – who is the facilitator for the green brigade who
are keen to turn the wheel back in their own back yard.
Paddy fields which remained uncultivated for decades are used for rice
cultivation once again.
Having set out with the motto of enjoying everything under the sun,
the group which is a mixture of both youth and mid-age residents are
enjoying every bit of their foray under the sun and getting themselves
soaked in the muddy water of their village with the village panchayat
building serving as backdrop of their leisurely activities in the
paddy fields.
Farming is fun, if you do not believe it then watching the young boys
of Sarzora in action in the paddy field. They are enjoying every bit
of it. They are the new breed of Goans who have taken farming with all
the zeal and determination.
It is a new learning process for the teenagers but for the generation
of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s it is going back to the relearning school,
yes you have read it right, it is revisiting the paddy fields to
revive the practices of community farming.
For the last few decades Goa has lost touch with farming more so with
paddy field cultivation. A large chunk of paddy fields are lying
uncultivated in Goa with many a land shark eyeing them to build
monster box structures.
But brick by brick, yard by yard Goan paddy fields are getting a
greener look. Thanks to the community farming and organizations like
Goa Sudharop which has become a facilitator in the ‘going back to the
roots’ movement which is taking shape in different parts of Goa.
For Seby Rebello, ‘going back to the roots’ is taking shape in his
village in Sarzora and he is quiet upbeat about it and the role Verma
D’Mello of Goa Sudharop has played in the farming journey in his
village.
Coming from the electronics engineering background and subsequently
working as casino technician on the cruise liners going back to the
paddy field was like a brain wave which hit him out of the blue
especially with the pandemic times the world is passing through.
But there was a problem, how to go about it. The mechanical tools in
the form of tillers, pumps and other equipment was made available
thanks to Goa Sudharop but then Seby was a complete novice in paddy
cultivation.
So Seby set upon himself the task of finding people from his own
village who are into paddy fields cultivation and doing it
successfully for the last many years.
His first stop was at former seamen Valentino Gracias, who is doing
his own farm house and doing paddy cultivation, Valentino was kind
enough to pass his hand on knowledge to Seby.
That done, then Seby, who dies not own any paddy field in the village,
needed to find paddy fields and convince the owners of their mission
and use it for paddy field cultivation.
He was able to convince two people in the village, an educationist
Dominic Fernandes and former seamen Caitan Fernandes to give their
paddy field for the experimental project in the village.
That done Seby, who is also the office bearer of the local football
club Sarzora Sports Club, got together a bunch of footballers from the
village, who are playing for different clubs in Goa and Bengaluru to
help in the paddy cultivation.
This is just one part of the story, of how the boys and women who are
behind the quiet revolution taking place in Sarzora.

[Goanet] Stranded Goans reach Dabolim via special Chartered flight one more to follow

2020-07-06 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Doha: Simon D’Silva and John D’Sa are ‘The 2 apostles’ in the eyes of
Seby Mascarenhas, a Benaulim-born long term resident of Qatar for
their role in ferrying the stranded Goans by two different chartered
flights from Qatar to Goa.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKVGhP2c3bc

The first chartered flight with 171 passengers landed in Goa on July
6. A second flight is scheduled to reach Goa on July 8 with an equal
number of passengers.

Most of the Qatar returnee have lost their jobs, while others making
the journey back to India were in Qatar on Visit visa’s. Sick, old and
pregnant woman were among others who reached Goa’s Dabolim Airport on
July 6.

All the people were registered with the Indian Embassy in Qatar for
the Vande Mataram flight- the special reparation flights which are
ferrying stranded Indians from different parts of the world.

Strangely, the Vande Mataram flight to Goa did not take off as Goans
did not have the numbers. They were only 80 people waiting to go back
to Goa. A request to put together to take a combined flight with
passengers from Goa and neigbouring Mangalore was shot down by
officials in the Indian administration, people who were connected with
the repatriation efforts informed.

“John and Simon are strong members of this community and will always
be inseparable when it comes to serving a cause be it the church, or
at hosting a movie or a tiatr, like all humans they do agree to
disagree at times, its time for us Goans to thank both. God bless the
2 apostles,” Seby wrote in the Qatar Goans, whatsapp group praising
the efforts of the two individuals.

There were many people from Goa to be repatriated and were waiting
from February end.

“The GWA in collaboration with ICC came forward to arrange chartered
flight for the needy and deserving persons as an humanitarian service.
Many Goans including people from neighbouring states like Karnataka
and Maharashtra on short term visas, aged parents, pregnant women and
students who came on visit are part of this stranded people,” a
statement from GWA said.

Simon D’Silva said that the initiative was taken in mid-May but due to
lack of passengers it took longer than expected.

D’Silva also said that hotel accommodation, transportation to
neighbouring states with online entry passes and Covid 19 tests
arrangement have been organized in coordination with the concerned
authorities.

John De Sa as Convener of the Covid-19 Stranded Qatar Goans Evacuation
Team kicked off his mission on June 21.

“Qatar Goans stranded since March 2020 after losing their Jobs and
even after 3 months of patiently waiting to be evacuated to Goa, the
stranded Goans saw no light at the end of the tunnel, at that juncture
likeminded Qatar Goans got together and took responsibility upon
themselves,” John De Sa wrote.

“Covid-19 Stranded Qatar Goans Evacuation Team, (was started) with
sole objective of flying stranded Qatar Goans to Goa, and within 2
weeks of forming the Team, are pleased to announce the departure of
their Chartered Flight from Qatar to Goa, on 8th July 2020,” he added.

[Goanet] Churchill alemao gives yellow card to Executive Committee members of Goa Football Association

2020-07-05 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Goa Football Association (GFA) 2019-2020 season is well and truly
‘over’ if ones goes by the press note released by the its General
Secretary Jovito Lopes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7EtFapFQgo

Lopes, who is a paid secretary of GFA, has in a letter circulated to
the GFA Executive Committee members has said “We need to know when the
season could be made operative for the new season 2020-2021 as the
season 2019-2020 is over,” without specifying as how and who has taken
the decision to officially end the season which was halted in March 23
this year on account of the Corona Virus pandemic.

A host of executive committee members have been in arms over the
failure of the president to convey a meeting of the Executive
Committee and had addressed letters on May 22 addressed to the
President and a fresh one last week sent to the Secretary. The EC
members had requested the president to convey a meeting digitally to
decide on the fate of the entire season and the pending leagues and
tournament besides other issues, taking into account the Covid 19
situation, but none of the reminders and letters evoked any response
from the President and the Secretary, they lamented.

The GFA president has nowhere touched upon the idea of hosting the EC
meeting via the digital platform and instead has stated that it is has
had not been feasible to host the meeting on account of the COVID-19
Pandemic situation.

“The President, Mr. Churchill Alemao, desires to inform that in view
of the COVID-19 Pandemic situation from March 23, 2020; the Lockdown,
the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Government Order
restraining meetings, it has not been possible to have the meetings of
the Executive Committee,” Lopes says.

A host of decision pertaining to the upcoming season need to be
arrived which needs the approval of the EC and Churchill said they
will be addressed in due time without setting any timeframe to the
hosting of the EC meeting.

“Several important decisions need to be taken, like the status,
outcome of several championships/leagues; renewal of membership
registration, AGM, etc and these will be definitely taken up and
decided by the Committee. The clubs' interests shall be protected,” he
stressed.

The President stressed that the registered clubs with GFA need not
worry about the club annual renewal process as “their interest shall
be fully protected”.

The GFA press release said with Covid19 cases increasing and
transmissions in full force and a likely scenario of Goa touching its
peak in terms of positive cases, Churchill has said this is not the
right time to host a EC meeting.

“At the moment, the situation is quite worrisome due to the COVID-19
pandemic, and all decisions in the best interest of the affiliated
units, which are very dear to me, will be arrived at by the Executive
Committee once the situation improves in the State,” the President
said.

“The situation is worsening in the State what with five deaths and
new cases increasing every day and more areas coming under the
pandemic. More and more people are testing positive, containment zones
sealed. With transmission almost in full force and predictions that
Goa could be touching the peak, the President emphasised that life is
very precious and as such the need to take utmost precautions as well
as strict adherence to Government guidelines,” Churchill added.

Churchill pointed out that the Goa Government in their circular has
specifically asked to restrain from having meetings due to the
prevailing situation in the country and in Goa.

At the time of postponement a host of leagues and tournaments were on
the verge of getting over and a few were yet to start.

The Goa Professional League, the top tier competition did not get over
and at the time of the postponement Sporting Clube de Goa were leading
44 points from 20 matches in the 12-team league played on a home and
away basis.

Dempo were in the second spot with 41 points from 21 matches followed
by Churchill Bros. 37 from 17 points and Salgaocar SC 35 from 21
matches. Churchill Bros, patron incidentally is GFA President
Churchill Alemao.

The second tier of Goan competition, First Division League did not
start when all sporting activities in the state came to a standstill
on account of the Covid19 situation.

Pango cries foul as GFA President Churchill Alemao unilaterally
declares season as 'over'

Goa Football Association (GFA) vice President Anthony Pango has
lamented that the GFA President instead of addressing the issues
raised by the Executive Committee members and replying them has
preferred to take the media route.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnrn79xtuXw

Five executive committee members had written to the president to
convey a meeting of the Executive Committee and had addressed letters
on May 22 and a fresh one last week was sent to the Secretary. The EC
members had requested the president to convey a meeting digitally to
decide on the fate of the entire season and the pending leagues and
tournament besides other issues, taking into account the Covid 19
situation, but none of the reminders and letters evoked any response
from the President and the Secretary.

Pango said while FIFA and All India Football Federation (AIFF) have
made use of the digital platforms like Zoom to host meeting why the
same is not happening at GFA, he has questioned.

“FIFA and AIFF have decided regarding closing or extending the
football season by holding meetings of the Executive Committee
electronically. We have remained the GFA President and Secreatry in
our letters,” Pango, a former footballer who played in the Goa top
tier completion for Agassaim Youth Club.

Pango said GFA President is not authorized to arrive at such
unilateral decisions like declaring the season is ‘over’, he said.

“GFA President is not empowered to take such decisions of ending the
season on his own,'' he added.

“More than five Executive Committee members had written to the GFA
Secretary and President requesting for a meeting. Instead of replying
to the duly elected members the President chose to go to the section
of the media,” he said.

[Goanet] Mining

2020-05-21 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Goan tribal federation file petition in High Court over resumption of mining

Dust and Queue of mining truck haunt Goa residents

Gakuved Federation has filed a PIL in the Hon'ble High Court of Bombay
at Goa bench citing various violations of laws and rules in ongoing
mining transportation.

Gakuved in its petition has also mentioned about the plight of the
poor tribal villagers living in the mining affected villages like
Caurem, of South Goa. Gakuved Federation has made Chief Secretary,
Directorate Mines & Geology, Goa Pollution Control Board, District
Collector South Goa, SP South as parties along with two mining
companies that are presently handling mining transportation in Caurem
area. The petition was filed yesterday 20.05.2020 and have requested
for urgent hearing on 22.05.2020.

During lockdown when mining transport started people suspected about
the legality of ore transported, but no one questioned as people
wanted truck operators to earn some income for survival during
lockdown period, but if you look at the present situation on road, it
looks like that there is a some strategy is being planned by some
politicians to sell whole of Goa's iron ore deposit during this
lockdown period.

Yes, a definite plan is on the cards to sell Goa mining resources at
break neck speed during the lockdown period throwing all Covid-19
restrictions in the state to the wind.

The ore transported from various parts of the state, for its onward
export is the one which was extracted prior to March 15, 2018 as
Supreme Court has banned mining and put a ban on renewing any lease
agreements in the state.

On January 30, 2020, the Supreme Court allowed mining firms to
transport iron ore that was validly mined from mines in Goa, on the
condition that, they had paid royalty to the government authorities.
This has given a push to the economy in the mining belt, which had
come to standstill after the Supreme Court order.

However, in a bid to finish transportation within six months as per
the Apex court directive, deadline of which ends on June 30, the
mining companies and transporters seem to be violating the law and DMG
regulations.

The unchecked violations, as such, have been threatening the lives and
health of the locals, mostly at Sanvordem-Curchorem and Quepem who
have opposed the movement of trucks but their pleas have fallen on
deaf ears.

“Instead of extending lease period and giving benefit to only select
people who have benefited from Portuguese regime, go for fresh auction
of all mining lease immediately to start mining, this will definitely
benefit all the stakeholders of Goa,” twitted Sanjay Dessai, Principal
at CES College Cuncolim,Goa, learner & Researcher in the area of
Corporate governance & finance, working for social awareness.

Sanjay Dessai feels for the people of the living in mining affected
areas of Goa, as he was born and brought up in the mining areas. He
feels for the everyday sufferings of the people living in the area.
The turmoil for the common man on account of mining is not a recent
story but has been going for decades.

Here are a few Snajy Dessai’s mining related tweets.

“Happy to know that Goa Govt has permitted to export Rs 4,500,000
(Rs. 4,500 crore) worth of iron ore to revive Goan economy. I just
wanted to know how much direct revenue Goa Govt will get from Rs
4,500 crore sale, experts please guide.

Figure of Rs 4,500 crore is arrived as follows. Total ore to be
exported is 75,0 tonnes, Present rate of iron ore per tonne is $
80 per tonne and exchange rate is Rs 75 per US dollar, 80 x 75 = 6000
per tonne . 75,0 X 6000 = 4,500,000).”

“From where are they getting the valuation of $80 per tonne?
International metal prices are at it's all time low. Even a giant like
Vedanta is reeling & is borrowing at double digits interest from the
market,” wrote another one in response to Sanjay Dessai’s tweet.

"People who have committed illegal mining cannot manage our family
gold. Clearly anyone found to have committed illegal mining should not
be allowed to manage our family gold. Our Supreme Court found the
entire Goan mining industry was mining illegally for nearly five
years. Only auctions or mining through a government company can
achieve zero loss. But the deeper question is why are we selling our
family gold, calling the sale proceeds “revenue” and spending it? This
is fundamentally immoral. The capital must be saved in a future
generation fund, and the fund income distributed as a zonn, a dividend
to all," says Rahul Basu of Goa Foundation.

The Supreme Court in January, this year had permitted 9.5 million
tonne ore lying at jetties and plots, which has to be transported
within six months.

The South Collector has also issued a Standard Operating Procedure
(SOP) according to which only 25 to 30 trucks could ply per hour from
the mines.

However, the reality seems to be something different.

Locals said that the unregulated transportation choke the road in the
morning (up

Has Goa lost its plot on Corona virus fight...check this

People entered Goa with permission that were to be quarantined for two
days finally finds that there is no room available and had to stay in
their cars and sleep on the footpaths overnight. Some of them were
being escorted by police from one place to another as no rooms are
available. One of them is 2-3 months old baby.

Was on the roads for last two days traveling to Kerala to be with my

1. First I applied online for entry into Kerala. Got it in just over 3 hrs.

It was difficult to navigate through the website. The entire process
took about 30hrs.

3. While on the journey itself at the Goa border.

I got down and had to show I'd proof of all family members which was
written down in the register and then cleared to go.

4. At the Karnataka end all of us had to get down thermal screening
had to be done. Names entered in a register and then cleared to move.

5. As we traveled within Karnataka we were stopped at two toll booths
to enter our details.

6. Now comes the real one. As we entered Kerala at the first point. I
had to get down show my pass and was given a token.

With social distancing and ban on gathering the norms of the day, many
a sports associations are using the digital platform to inform and

Under-16 international and co-owner of Youth futsal Academy, which
operates from Chowgule College ground.

“Online Zoom Webinar organised by AIFC (All India Football Coaches) &
AIFF for the Coaches of India during this lockdown• I would like to
thank @the_aifc & Coaches Shekar and Caetano Pinho for including
FUTSAL as a topic for this programme and giving me an opportunity to

giving me an opportunity to present the topic to the 260+ coaches from
Maharashtra region.

“I believe that Futsal is the way forward to making better football
players and the right knowledge and education about this sport is
important,” he added.

Joshua, who spent a year in Portugal in 2007-2008 season while
training with Vitoria de Guimaraes club, was appreciative of the
support and backing for the world most popular game from Aaditya
Thackerey, who besides been an official of WIFA is a minister in the
Maharashtra cabinet.

“It was also good to see the support that the humble Mr.Aaditya
Thackeray is giving to football in Mumbai and I am hoping that he soon
puts his hands into bringing up t he sport of Futsal in the Indian
Subcontinent,” said the 30-year-old Fatorda resident.

Joshuah webinar interaction with coaches came in for praise from one
of the participant who took to twitter to give his feedback.

“@JoshuahVaz led a great session on Futsal today at #AIFCWebinar for
Maharashtra coaches. He is the only AFC Futsal Instructor in our
country and I have been lucky to have learnt about the game under him
at @YFA_GOA previously too. Always a pleasure learning from you

Ronaldo, Barcelona fan from India reaches out to poor people in Goa

Goan football coach along with UK and USA nationals rendering yeomen
service in Palolem during lockdown

By Armstrong Vaz

Palolem, Canacona

A football coach, a businessman and a yoga teacher have come together
under one roof in Goa. They have a common cause - reach out to the
poor and needy people in the coastal beach side resort of Palolem.

Goan Akhil Pagui, UK-born Linda Russell and Andrew Mason, a UK citizen
having business interests in Cambodia are on the field delivering
essential food items to the needy people of Palolem ever since the
lockdown was imposed.

Pagui, is a known Cristiano Ronaldo fan while Barcelona FC is his
favouritie club. He has been in to football coaching for the last one
and half decade. His football coaching odessey has taken him to
different part of the country. On the way he has been inspired by
different football ideologies and come across varied football coaching
mythologies.

But when the lockdown came calling in Palolem, he momentary set aside
his football shoes. Instead for the last few weeks, distributing food
grains and other essential items has become his priority.

In Palolem Beach area, one of the most popular beach in Goa, Akhil
along with other local volunteers have identified around 20 families
living without any financial support and who don't have money to buy
provisions during the lockdown period.

“It's very challenging to those who are daily wage earners and who
have absolutely no support. We have decided to provide them with
support in the form of food packages and other essential items. This
package will contain supplies for 10 to 15 days. Supplies will be
distributed through a network of our volunteers in respective
families. Cost of each packet is ₹ 1000/,” said Pagui.

For the records, Pagui football journey started with Mumbai-based
OSCAR Foundation, a organization which uses football as a platform to
bring about change in the lives of the under prevailed children of the
metropolis.

Thereafter he has had coaching stings with Canacona Sports Academy
(Goa), Lyceum Sports Club (Jaipur), Shanti Asiatic School (CBSE)
Jaipur, Chinmaya school (Mumbai), Patel boarding school ( Gujarat ,
Bhachau), and Concrete Involvement Football Academy ( C.I.F.A), his
personal academy in (Vadodara Gujarat).

“CIFA aims to develop talented young footballers across India. We
believe in holistic approach to football coaching development the
player as well as the young person,” he said about his football
academy and vision.

“CIFA understands the role sport can play in developing well rounded
and successful young adults. As well as coaching football to high
level CIFA also teaches children about health diet and how to build
self confidence and concentration through their unique coaching games
and drills,’ he added.

Working alongside and the driving force of the mission are two veteran
from two different fields.

Bhakti Yogi teacher Russell has been a long time visitor to India
dating back to nearly three decades while Mason, owner of franchise
Big Easy Phnom Penh and Ko Rong Samloem, Cambodia, which generates
money for charities in Cambodia, completes the circle. Mason has been
extending his charitable hand to the India project initiated by Pagui
and is a major fund raiser.

“So far we have raise rupees one lakh. More money is on the way
hopefully thanks to the efforts of Linda Russell and Andrew Mason,”
said Pagui.

“It’s a golden opportunity to change life to think creative or do
something to stay with the family and people understand the value of
food, especially the value of farmer. Everything is going to change.
It's a learning of the life. How to leave peacefully. Here I'm helping
underprivileged people giving food and working as a social
volunteer,” said Pagui.

Russell, stay put in Goa even as over 7,000 western tourists flew back
to their respective countries via the special repartition flights
arranged by the respective governments in association with their
Indian counterparts.

“I have stayed back to help my Indian friend (Akhil Pagui) to feed the
no income families in Palolem so they can survive this lockdown,”
Linda said in response to a question.

A Bhakti Yogi for the last 26 years has so far been helping 15 to 20
families in Palolem since the first nationwide 21-day lockdown was
announced on March 24 and its second extension happened till May 3,
and which was further extended to prevent the spread of the
Coronavirus.

Linda describes Pagui as a ‘Spiderman’ ready to help people in need.

“I have met a young guy Akhil Pagui who has the rainbow above his
head. Heartfelt kindness of which I have not seen in such a young chap
in a long time. We are collectively are on a quiet mission here in
India to help the needy. Selflessly he perseveres quietly like
Spiderman with as much aid as we can help,” Linda says.

Are we prepared for lifting of lock down on May 3?

Our Markets will open up and we need to maintain hygiene, water supply
and wash stations need to be created. Have we done that? The time of
lock down till May 3rd is meant for it.

Our migrant labour and unskilled labour and contract labour will start
working. Have we created enough Aawarness on the COVID 19 disease
pathology, hand washing techniques and hand sanitization, wearing
masks and removal, wearing gloves and removal, disposing this bio
medical waste to the right facility.
Our daily wage labourers who are on their own how are they going to
subsist? Who will pay them? Our Industries will start functioning
where is the facility for providing them In house stay? IDC and the
industries need to create this infrastructure. Frequent Hand washing
is one of the best methodologies to rid the virus do we have wash
stations with clean water and soap. Few more weeks and if there are no
rains there will b water shortage how r we going to tackle that?
As the saying goes "where there is clean water and soap there is hope"
Inter departmental co ordination is important along with the Citizenry
to actively participate in following the advisories of Govt. create an
infrastructure, develop legislations and equip our law enforcing
agencies to deal with the people with dignity, respect and all
fairness that can yield results. Interstate border goods transfer and
labour has to be dealt with stringent laws. Do we have these SoPs.
Sanitization of public places like markets, banks, post offices and
others. Have we got funding for that?
Our front line health care providers, our Police they need their PPE,
Have we made arrangements for these contingency funding? All this is
going to happen and many more just till 3/5/2020 where in we need
funds when the economy is down and Going into bankruptcy.
We all need to work in these times of exigencies and do our bit i. e.
1)Physical distancing, 2)Social distancing (refrain and restrain until
dire need) 3)Wearing a mask 4)Frequent scientific washing of hands for
min. 20secs. 5)Use of hand Sanitizers 6)Respiratory etiquettes
(coughing and sneezing in crook Of elbow or using tissue paper and
disposing in a closed bin. 7)Never touch your eyes, nose and mouth
until hands are washed. 8) Create awareness amongst our worthy maids,
class IV employees, unskilled labour, children etc 9) Follow
advisories of Govt. unfailingly. 10) Working Together Works We Can
Fight Corona Virus.

A Bhakti Yoga teacher from United Kingdom, a Goan football coach and

in South Goa.

Bhakti Yogi Linda Russell has been a long time visitor to India dating

A Bhakti Yogi for the last 26 years has so far been helping six

Linda says life has been hard for the local residents of Palolem
residents, who have no income on their own in the lockdown period and
were dependent on daily wages to keep the house fires burning.

”We shop and distribute basic staples such as fruit, vegetable, rice,
flour etc. Some families went to the forest in search of food during
the lockdown. We allocated families with adequate food to keep them
well and healthy. Toiletries and must haves have been also been
included,” she added.

Linda her decision to stay back and help was with a view to pay back
to India what she has learnt over the years.

“Thank you India for my education of 26 years to give me an
opportunity to give something good back. Love all serve all,” she
adds.

She informed that they are looking for financial aid to help the
families in the long run as they are running out of the money.

“We are raising money from the West and appealing for financial help,” she adds.

[Goanet] Zoom Sued for Fraud Over Privacy, Security Flaws

2020-04-10 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pgHRAAmiWg

Zoom Video Communications Inc. was accused by a shareholder of hiding
flaws in its video-conferencing app, part of a growing backlash
against security loopholes that were laid bare after an explosion in
worldwide usage. In a complaint filed Tuesday in San Francisco federal
court, the company and its top officers were accused of concealing the
truth about shortcomings in the app’s software encryption, including
its alleged vulnerability to hackers, as well as the unauthorized
disclosure of personal information to third parties including Facebook
Inc. Investor Michael Drieu, who filed the suit as a class action,
claims a series of public revelations about the app’s deficiencies
starting last year have dented Zoom’s stock price -- though the shares
are still up 67% this year as investors bet that the teleconferencing
company would be one of the rare winners from the coronavirus
pandemic. The company said it had mistakenly sent traffic through
Chinese data centers as it was dealing with a “massive increase” in
demand. It said it has stopped using that capacity as backup for
non-Chinese clients. Zoom is working on adding end-to-end encryption
but that’s still months away, Yuan has said. Many of the problems stem
from the fact that the app was geared toward enterprise clients with
their own IT security teams, instead of the broad consumer app it’s
become. The number of daily meeting participants across Zoom’s paid
and free services has gone from around 10 million at the end of last
year to 200 million now, the company said. Most of those people are
using its free service. From Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla Inc. to New
York City’s Department of Education, agencies around the world have
begun to ban usage of an app that’s risen during the coronavirus
lockdown as a home for everything from virtual cocktail hours to
cabinet meetings and classroom learning. On Tuesday, Taiwan barred all
official use of Zoom, becoming one of the first governments to do so.
Zoom Chief Executive Officer Eric Yuan has apologized for the lapses,
acknowledging in a blog post last week the company had fallen short of
expectations over privacy and security. Cybersecurity researchers warn
that hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in the software to eavesdrop
on meetings or commandeer machines to access secure files. Weak
encryption technology has given rise to the phenomenon of
“Zoombombing”, where uninvited trolls gain access to a video
conference to harass the other participants. Recordings of meetings
have also shown up on public internet servers. The company also routed
data through servers in China and used developers there, Citizen Lab
said in a report last week. Any official data routed through China
poses a major risk for Taiwan, a self-ruled island that Beijing claims
as part of its territory. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s
assertion, viewing the island as a sovereign nation. “The rapid uptake
of teleconference platforms such as Zoom, without proper vetting,
potentially puts trade secrets, state secrets, and human rights
defenders at risk,” researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen
Lab wrote.

Corona Virus crisis from the perspective of the struggles of the
working class and the oppressed.

While many office buildings have closed as a precautionary measure,
what about the staff that takes care of cleaning, maintenance and all?
If their pay is calculated on a daily wage basis, then they stand to
lose pay. Microsoft in the US has announced it won't cut pay of its
daily wage employees who are losing out on work because of
work-from-home imposed because of Corona.
But what's the scene in India?
Office complexes provide money to many people, such as the chai wala
that makes a living by selling tea, coffee, snacks etc in these office
buildings. The cigarette seller. With offices closed, these guys are
losing out on a lot of money every day. Let's think on these lines.

In Goa, the tourism industry is the hardest hit, how they pay for the
salaries of the staffa nd other overhead costs. The licence fess, the
taxes, power connection charges and other costs.
The airline industry is another which has been hit the most and with
it the travel agencies.
A hell lot of affected people all over the worldnot ony those
affected by viurs ... bit many who are the victims who are suffering
on the streets and in their jobs.
Lets pray for the virus to vanish fast and put an end to the
sufferings of the millions.

coaching and the development of cricket in India and abroad. Equipped
with all of the modern technologies, high-class coaching facility and
certified coaches, MSDCA spreads its centers to every corner of India
and abroad,

Aarka Sports was established in 2014 and has focused on sports
management and sports consultancy services in India and abroad. Aarka
Sports was founded by Mihir Diwakar, a sportsman himself. Mihir was a
part of the India U19 World Cup winning team and has performed at the
highest level to relate to the needs and wants of Sports and
Sportspersons. Aarka Sports is his extension of creating excellence in
sports.

Mihir Diwakar says "MSDCA is formed with the sole objective to provide
a platform to aspiring cricketers in the country through a structured
program, to help children learn cricket in a fun and engaging manner,
and to shape them into quality sportspeople. I am very confident about
the fact that a systematic learning program will help teach the basics
of cricket at a young age. With the right kind of basics for cricket
coaching in place, a child can learn and adapt easier and successfully
in order to succeed in the different formats of modern cricket".

Mihir Diwakar further added, "We took the initiative to start our
Talent Hunt Exchange Program in Qatar to create learning opportunities
for children, and to engage with local facility partners for the
future developmental projects in Cricket for the community before a
fully-pledged MS Dhoni Cricket Academy starts in Qatar.

Khalid Al Khayarin, Chairman of Absolute Sports said that "It's a
great opportunity for cricket aspirants in Qatar avail the Talent Hunt
Exchange Program from MS Dhoni Cricket Academy to learn the nuances
and skills Tom renowned and accredited coaches from MS Dhoni Cricket
Academy". He further added "We in Absolute Sports believe that Qatar
needs a structured Cricket Coaching Center and we are proud to be
associated with MSDCA LO provide the same. We are looking forward to
start a world-class Cricket Coaching Academy in the future to make it
as one of MSDCA's flagship centers in the region. We are thrilled and
are looking forward to a long-term association Aarka Sports and
MSDCA".

MSDCA India is currently operational in 12 centers in India, 2 in
Singapore and in Dubai. MSDCA India has 20 more centers that will
function by March 2020. It aims to surpass 100 centers in India by
March 2020 and 2021. With this aspiring objective and mission to
provide quality coaching across India, MSDCA India organized a 7-day
Cricket Coaching Clinic in 40 different cities in India and London
where children were exposed to the MSDCA Coaching Program. In total,
5,000 children were trained under the MSDCA Cricket Coaching Clinic
Program both in India and the United Kingdom.

MSDCA organized a 2-Coach Education Program in July and September
2019, where more than 250 applicants registered for the course. 45
applicants were selected for the course, and 20 coaches are now
working with MSDCA as full-time coaches. Batches are comprised of both
fresh and experienced coaches with a cricketing background. Learning
during the course was not limited to cricket-skill coaching only;
coaches were educated on the role of coaching, how to interact and
communicate with parents, given knowledge on first aid and the use
technological tools for enhanced coaching.

Mihir Diwakar said that "Aarka Sports and MSDCA invest heavily in the
training and development of their coaches to ensure a high-quality
training program for participants across every center in India and
worldwide. At MSDCA, we are aspiring to be present in more than 100
cities by 2020 and 2021, so we require quality resources in all
aspects of our MSDCA verticals". Mihir further added, "We are coming
up with mobile applications and different technological tools to
manage our academies, students and opening up assistance and coaching
to all aspirants through touch of a button across the globe".

MSDCA wants to spread structured and standardized modern cricket
coaching across the globe and wants to create infrastructure and
world-class facilities in India to expose children to different
cricketing conditions and different cricketing formats for advanced
experience.

Muhammed Habibunnabi - General Secretary of Indian Sports Centre, and
Srinivas TS Cricket in charge at Indian Sports Centre all attended the
function.

Goa to have first astro turf surface in #Peddem, #Mapusa as #Margao
plays a waiting game Work on laying the #hockey astro turf surface at
Peddem #Mapusa has been completed in what is seen as a major boost for
the sport in the small state of #Goa. The Astro turf surface at Peddem
Mapusa promises to be an answer to the hockey fraternity’s prayers
lasting decades. The game has sunk into obscurity with the absence of
a synthetic pitch with results at the national level portraying Goan
hockey caught in a time warp. At a cost of approximately Rs 12 crore,
tender requirements will call for an #FIH approved surface for which
around Rs 4.5 crore has been earmarked. Two pitches, one for practice,
would be laid. The match surface admeasures 91.4m x 55m and the one
for practice 55m x 45.7m. The essential sub-base, comprising mainly
asphalt, will cost an estimated Rs 1.82 crore. The rubber base to
absorb shock that sits above the sub-base accounts for a further Rs
1.66 crore. Irrigation and drainage systems crucial to a hockey pitch
along with a sump and fencing around the pitch would cost Rs 2 crore.
Additional charges including consultancy and GST takes the total cost
to around Rs 12 crore. The budget excludes 2000 lux floodlights
(expected to cost Rs 70 lakh) and plans for a building housing stands
for spectators have not been included in the first phase. Instead,
temporary stands will be installed for the #NationalGames. An adjacent
facility would provide dressing rooms and a temporary medical room
would be built for the Games, according to the #SAG. Plans to lay an
artificial turf in the environs of the Nehru Stadium at Fatorda are
also on. In what will be a boon for the game not just in South Goa but
the entire state, the turf could be could be ready in the next few
months time. A solution is in sight. #GoanHockey officials informed
that the association has been allotted land by the State government
near #NehruStadium, #Fatorda. "The cost of installing the turf has to
be borne by the association,” said #BennyViegas, an official of Goan
Hockey. If all goes well, hockey in the state is poised for a positive
result. And that, in regulation time!

Goa fights to clean the ocean free of plastic

Midway through the month of April a social activist posted a video of
Kharevaddo Beach from the port city of Vasco littered as it was with
garbage and plastic and a host of things which are an eyesore to the
viewers. That was not the only thing, sewerage and water from the
toilets was opening flowing into the Arabian Sea as the pig-style
toilets have not been connected to any sewerage connection worthy of
its name.

No wonder, Suni Loran, a member of the Jaycee organization, who have
been doing bits and pieces work of cleaning some places in Vasco said
it a huge ask which requires a long term solution and cannot be a
one-off thing.

“We are preparing a plan since the problem is huge it cannot be a
onetime cleaning exercise. Will appreciate feedback on the issue from
people. It’s our dream to revive the beach,” said Loran.

We are approaching the end of May and the Kharevaddo beach continues
to be full of garbage and plastic waste. In a few days time, the South
West monsoon will set in Goa and with its arrival effectively all the
plastic waste will be flowing in the Arabian Sea.

If Loran and his band of Jaycees or for that matter any people who are
concerned about saving the oceans from this plastic disaster have to
act fast, it now.

And they cannot be looking far for advice and logistic inputs to tide
over the problem, least of them a temporary one before embarking on
the long term beach cleaning project.

Goa’s coastal villages from Armabol in North Goa to Palolem and Agonda
is full of buzz with long time foreign nationals and locals alike
joining in beach cleaning exercise.

Certainly Lohan and his team can look for inspiration and inputs from
these teams based in various parts of Goa and who are into beach
cleaning exercise for the last couple of months.

“We are the family of Arambol who love and care for our land. We
believe that this land belongs to our children and doing our best
keeping it clean for them. We believe in education and doing our best
to teach, inspire and motivate each other. We are here to take care of
our home and ocean that are source of our life, and the temple of our
spirits,” says Jade Minjung Kim of Clean Arambol Team

On Sunday May 26, Clean Arambol Team were at Sweet Water Lake
continuing their project of cleaning Arambol which kicked off in the
month of March.

“Dear Clean Arambol Family from all over the world. Arambol is ready
to transform to clean Arambol, and we are looking for any suggestion
that will help Arambol to be waste free, pollution free village with
cleanest beach in India. I want to gather all the available resources
in the world to make this happen. Together, we can make Arambol clean
again,” adds Kim, a Korean born Australian citizen and an yoga
practionier based in Armabol, one of the founder member of the
movement for Clean Arambol.

“Our coastline near Sweetlake urgently need your help before rain
takes all the garbage into our ocean. Come and join our Clean Arambol
team and be a part of this clean India movement. As part of
preparation for cleaning sweetlake before the monsoon, we are looking
for used rice bags and used cement bags to remove all the beer bottles
from Sweetlake. Together, we can make Sweetlake waste free again.”

In Anjuna, yet another coastal village of Goa, Earthday Everyday, is
one such group of concerned citizens and local stakeholders that have
come forward to help tackle the garbage menace to society.

The seed was planted one day in early April this year when Swapnil
Naik of Gurubar and Ryan Volado of Bunkd Hostels in Anjuna took it
onto themselves to clear up the oil and tar ball mess that washes up
on shore every year. With the help of staff they cleared up a small
stretch of beach that is in front of and near Gurubar.

This small act of awareness didn't go unnoticed and they were
contacted by Banglanaatak dot com the India liason for Earthday
Network, a global NGO that has started a massive global campaign
called The Great Global Cleanup, who in turn invited them to
coordinate beach clean up campaign in North Goa... Since then the duo
have managed to bring together many other like minded stakeholders and
citizens together under the Earthday Everyday banner and so far have
cleaned up Anjuna, Vagator Baga and Chapora beaches.

“In yoga philosophy and practice we are taught to keep our environment
clean. It’s a form of meditation, mental hygiene. It’s called karma
yoga, the yoga of service,” says Yash Aswini who runs Be Yoga Bound a
yoga studio in Vagator.

Elsewhere away from the beaches, Chowgule College of Arts and Science
Margao in association with Kafmar Environmental services have romped
in Advocate Afroz Shah, a young Indian lawyer from Mumbai, synonymous
with the world’s largest beach clean-up project.

In October 2015, Shah and his neighbor Harbansh Mathur, an 84-year-old
who has since passed away, were frustrated with t

[Goanet] Goa awards for excellence in journalism

2019-04-30 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
The Goa Union of Journalists will hold its much awaited awards
function of its prestigious awards for excellence in journalism on the
occasion of World Freedom of Press Day on Friday May 3.
The event will be graced by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant as well as
Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar and will have Adv Cleofato
Almeida Coutinho, an eminent counselor and political commentator as a
keynote speaker.
The ceremony will be held on Friday May 3 at 3pm at Kala Academy’s
Black Box auditorium.
The awards for the years 2012 to the year 2018 which have already been
declared will be handed out at the event.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in
December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General
Conference. Since then, 3 May is celebrated worldwide as World Press
Freedom Day.
This year's theme “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in
Times of Disinformation” discusses current challenges faced by media
in elections, along with the media’s potential in supporting peace and
reconciliation processes and is especially relevant in Today’s India.
The day is an opportunity to: ● celebrate the fundamental principles
of press freedom; ● assess the state of press freedom throughout the
world; ● defend the media from attacks on their independence; ● and
pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of
duty.
The award winners who will be felicitated on the occasion are as follows:

make any progress in taming the Nigerians.
If earlier it was the men here it seems to be a case for a Nigerian

[Goanet] Scrap National Games, cry former sports people

2018-10-22 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
https://youtu.be/kLbOVmaYhRs

There is a growing clamor in Goa among a section of former sportsmen
and administrators that the National Games concept of Indian Olympic
Association (IOA) has become outdated and needs to be scrapped.

India Olympic Games, later named as National Games were introduced in
1924 to prepare for the then 1924 Olympic Games. Since then, they are
held every two years for the records, but have missed the two-year
interval on many occasions.

The last edition of the National Games, which had postponed many a
times will be held in coastal state of Goa from March 30 to April 14.

"The National Games have lost its purpose. I do not think these games
contribute in anyway to help our sports persons compete in the Asian
Games and the Olympic Games. Its time to scrap these games and fund
the respective Associations," said Lector Mascarenhas, a former
international footballer from Goa.

Taking a dig at the national associations and their lack of interest
in grooming and preparing athletes for the Asian Games and Olympics,
Mascarenhas applauded the efforts of former sportsmen Geet Sethi and
Prakash Padukone.

"Hats off to Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) a non profit foundation formed
by two legends viz Geet Sethi and Prakash Padukone. In the London 2012
Olympics, 4 out of 6 medalist in the 2012 Olympic Gmaes were supported
by 'OGQ' very ably run by CEO Viren Rasquinha, the former Indian
hockey captain. A definite way forward," added the former Dempo SC,
Salgaocar SC and Customs and Central Excise player.

Former hockey player Jorge Goes from Goa now based in UK questioned
the state of the game in the state is the same what it was 30 years
back thanks to in fighting.

"During our playing days we used to hear that astro turf will be
installed one in South Goa and the other in the North, but nothing
of that sort has happened, hopefully the new hockey stadium will be
built in time for the National Games." Jorge, however, was not in
favour of the IOA continuing with the National Games.

"To me, there is no point In organising the national games. It's a
grey area for the politicians and bureaucrat to loot the monies.

"In my opinion the monies should given to school and colleges to get
their sports department organised on professional lines. Award long
term scholarship to the deserving and future promising sports stars.
Give monies at grass root level to organise various sports
competition. National games is a political sports event to loot," he
added.

Former subjunior India international Saby Antao now a certified
strength trainer at an university in New York said the trust should be
on infrastructure rather then the games.

"What use are these games? Are they used as benchmarks for qualifying
for Asian Games or Olympics or World Championships. If they use
separate meets for these games (Asian and Olympics) then the Games are
a waste," said Saby.

Noel Estibeiro, a former table tennis player, who has filed a case
against the state government in the Goa bench of the Mumbai High Court
over the non implementation of the Sports Code directives of the
Central Union ministry feels the "sports should not be neglected for
what is happening off the field".

"National games should be hosted by Goa. With the national games we
will get good sports infrastructure for our local talent. With the
best of infrastructure in place, it will help them (sportsmen) to be
groomed and hopefully they will excel in the near future," added Noel.

"It is also a dream for many players to follow their passionate sport
and to witness live all the action in their own state and learn and
get motivated by watching great players and athletes of the country,"
he added.

Nilesh Naik, President of Goa Tennis Ball Cricket Association also
said Goa will benefit from the games.

"In terms of infrastructure, Goan sports persons will benefit and will
get standard playing grounds to perform in future events. National
games are the highest rated sports event in India where top athletes
and sportsman eye for top position to represent the country in
international events, Goan sport persons will also get a chance to
highlight their skills in this mega event and sports culture will
develop."

The uncertainty of the Games taking place still float in the air with
several projects yet to take off, prompting several question marks
over the state preparedness to host the multi-discipline event and the
impending 2019 Lok Sabha elections round the corner.

Out of the several news stadiums which the tiny state has proposed to
built banking on the Rs.225 crore central government funds, at least
three of them are in the plinth stage and in some cases construction
is yet to take off.

"In certain cases works have started, it has come to plinth level. In
certain cases works would start in about 8 days time, to be completed
well before time for the games," Sports Authority of Goa Director V M
Prabhudessai told Khelupdates.com..

[Goanet] GOLFING FOR GOOD WITH SEEMA SADEKAR

2018-10-09 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
GOLFING FOR GOOD WITH SEEMA SADEKAR

Is she a Goan?

Toronto-born and raised golf pro, Seema Sadekar, is using her passions
to blaze a whole new genre within the worlds of golf and fashion.
After a childhood spent hitting golfballs and perfecting her swing,
she earned a full scholarship at the University of Las Vegas Nevada
before going on to compete in the LPGA, all while keeping an eye on
the need for more female clothing options within the golf community.
Now, a vetted golfer with multiple tours under her belt, Sadekar is
using her knowledge, experience, and flare for fashion to encourage
other women and girls to pursue golf and “sparkle” while doing it. A
self-proclaimed golf fashionista, she is on a mission to positively
influence others, including through her attendance at the Joe Carter
Classic in support of the Children’s Aid Foundation. Joining other
sports stars on the Eagle’s Nest Golf course for a fun-filled day of
friendly competition, we caught-up with Sadekar to discuss how access
to the great game of golf influenced her childhood and is now
inspiring her to giveback.

Children’s Aid Foundation: How did you get started golfing?

Seema Sadekar: I learned golf in Toronto, Canada where I was born and
raised. My father was always a fan of the sport and saw an opportunity
for both me and my sister, Nisha. We would spend many days after
school during winter at an indoor facility hitting golf balls off mats
and into nets. Because we began at a young age, we were always trying
to understand what all the hype and excitement was about with the
game; it was so natural to us. In the summer season, we would go to
our home course — Emerald Hills Golf Club — and finally spend the days
out of school, hitting balls off grass, playing 9 or 18, and hanging
out with all the other junior members. We always made new friends and
then began to understand golf beyond just the game. My parents quickly
saw talent and opportunity from me and my sister. A year after
starting the game, we began our junior careers at the IMG Sports
Academy. IMG gave us a solid foundation while preparing and competing
amongst the best juniors and athletes all over the world. After a
strong junior career, I received a full scholarship at the University
of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) where I spent four amazing years competing
in the most sparkly city.

CAF: What did sports, in particular golf, mean to you throughout your childhood?

SS: As a child I never really understood the opportunities that were
given to me. Growing-up, I just went with the flow and trusted that my
parents were guiding me in the right direction. As I look back at my
childhood now, I realize the crazy reality of where golf has really
taken me. I have had the opportunity to travel the world, meet
amazing people, be outdoors, be inside the ropes, teach children, be a
leader, be a role-model, be a fashion inspiration… and it goes on and
on. I want to be the best that I can be for the game of golf, so that
I can continue to inspire and grow the game the way I believe it can
be grown.

“I’ve made the most of my opportunities, and while it hasn’t been
easy, I have had guidance and understand how important those people
have been to me. I would consider those particular individuals to have
been my light, and there is no better reward than to be a light to a
brighter future.”

CAF: You recently attended the Joe Carter Classic. What was that
experience like?

SS: This has been my second year attending the Joe Carter Classic and
it truly is an honour to be able to support Joe Carter and the
Children’s Aid Foundation. Joe has been a hero to me from a young age.
The Blue Jays were, and remain, a family experience for the Sadekars;
we would always go and watch and cheer on the Jays. We would bond and
love every moment — those are memories that I will cherish forever and
to have Joe Carter invite me and my sister each year is an honour. I
support Joe and I am thankful for the opportunities that his event and
The Children’s Aid Foundation provide.

CAF: What is a “golf fashionista”?

SS: I remember growing-up playing golf, and my dad would starch my
long IZOD shorts and oversized golf shirts and I used to feel a bit
boyish. When I was little, I loved dressing-up. I used to wear my
mom’s jewelry and make-up and talk to myself in the mirror (I know…).
Basically, I was always a “girly girl”. When I started getting good at
golf, I figured I would be able to embrace my style and really tell me
people who I am through my fashions and styles. I love thinking
outside the box with fashion and with golf and coined myself “The Golf
Fashionista”. My fashion really gives me an approach to “being me on
the course”. I think that’s so important for me and for every other
female who wants to play the game.

CAF: How have sports impacted your self-image and confidence?

SS: You really find out who you are and a lot about yourself through
sports and competition. Being involved with sports and honing my

[Goanet] Sports Authority of Goa cold shoulder young goans

2018-09-03 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Government sports scheme and funds are meant to tap and nurture the
talent. But records prove otherwise especially when it comes to Sports
Authority of Goa.

Did Dayne and Katya Coelho, the siblings from Calangute who
participated in the recently concluded Asian Games in Indonesia in the
sailing event meet the criteria?

The question that troubles the Goan sports loving people as to why
they have been cold shouldered by the SAG since 2015. We have to get
the answers for this disdainful and unsporting behavior showed towards
them by the SAG.

Have they not proved their talent to the local government and the SAG?

We now have to find out as to the reason why these two Goan Sailors
were put into this kind of position and predicament at the Games.

All that they had asked for was two windsurfing boards costing Rs.12
to 13 lakhs. But sadly that did not come about. Instead the father was
left to fend for himself and had to air dash to Singapore from
Thailand to get second hand boards. And that second hand equipment
failed them.

The sibling’s records for the past few years speak for them.

Katya was the first and youngest participant to represent India at the
Youth Olympics in Nanching, China in 2014.

Dayne has dominated the National Championship for almost 7 years in
the youth category and won his first senior category (men) Nationals
at the age of 17 for which he was awarded the most promising yachtsman
award.

Dayne won the bronze medal in RS:ONE Class at the 37th Singapore
Championship held in January 2018 and a silver and a bronze in Techno
Class in Singapore in 2016.

What is the use of sachems and scholarship if they cannot help
deserving sportspersons.

Have these two sailors not proved their talent? Are they not Goans?
Would they not bring glory to the State?

Asian championships, Olympics... are the benchmarks and Dayne was
preparing for this since 2015. The participation records had been
submitted to the SAG and their case for equipment has been pending
since 2015. The most important thing here is that the authorities have
failed to understand that all this is done not for their individual
glory but to prove the superiority of our state and country.

Coming to Prabhudessai claim that the names of the participants were
finalised in June-July.

We want to question Prabhudessai as to whether we nurture talent
towards the fag end of the event when the D-day is close or for a
period of time.

Your department has failed to tap and train them well in advance.

Donald Coelho has been sending you letters since 2015 asking for
funds for their scientific training and equipment in preparation for
the Asian games. Did you not have enough time to go through proper
protocol?

Why were they ignored?

Other countries they were given good scientific training and sent
abroad for better exposure and experience to compete with major
countries, but we lacked in that.

Support and encouragement came from their father Donald, who acted as
their coach, sponsor, trainer etc, spending money from family funds.
With the limited funds at his disposal, he took them abroad for a few
weeks twice a year since 2015 spending over 2 crores dipping into
family funds.

He took them 19 times to South East Asia, as that is what he could
afford and from that SAG funded twice, once a coaching camp in India
with a foreign coach and the other an International exposure and twice
by the Indian government but that too only partially like 40-60% funds
came from them and rest the family had to bear.

So, if with this limited training they came this far, imagine if SAG
had to nurture this talent, would they not get medals for their
country? Other countries send their sailors for months and months of
training to Europe.

Even some medalists from India at the Asian Games in sailing were sent
for training in Europe many times and that is they were able to do
hone their skills and make the country proud.

Besides, it is not like they are asking for funds from the someone
else’s pocket but our, it is our own taxpayer's money meant to be used
in the right manner to the deserving and these two for sure deserved
it.

Another debatable point is that SAG was aware of their likely
representation in the Asian games as Donald put in his proposal for
two surfboards 5 months in advance! The boards were asked for the
Asian Sailing Championship held in Jakarta in June which was the
selection criteria where one had to finish in top 8 to get selected
for the Asian games and this duo proved their talent and got selected
using their own old equipment. The equipment has its wear and tear and
at the Asian games, it gave way.

Could SAG not go through all the protocol and finalise it for
immediately knowing the urgency and they had more than 4 months?

Donald the father and their coach add that Dayne has reached a level
beyond his coaching capability to take him to the next level. Now our
focus is the 2020 Olympics wherein International & scientific coaching
has

[Goanet] Goan achievers: Coelho siblings raise Goenkar flag at the Asian Games in Indonesia

2018-08-20 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
“I have an earnest desire to leave something in this world and a
profound desire to rub it in the face of anyone who doubted me,”
says Indian sailing team member at the ongoing Asian Games Dayne
Coelho in a facebook post with a picture of his draped in the Indian
tri-colour after winning a medal at the 37th Singapore open
windsurfing championship this year.

Dayne wants to prove his detractors wrong. Cold shouldered and
neglected by Sports Authority of Goa the teenager is scripting his own
success story against all odds… thanks in large measure to his
sportingly inclined family.

The Indian sports system is fraught with bureaucratic red tape,
political interference, conflicts of interest and corruption and the
Coelho family has had a bitter firsthand experience.

Dayne along with sister Katya are the only athletes from the coastal
state who are part of the Indian team at the ongoing Asian Games in
Jakarta Indonesia.

Coached by their father Donald, a former national windsurfing champion
for three consecutive years from 2010-12, the Coelho siblings will be
vying for medals in the mixed event on August 24.

But making it to the Games has not been an easy story. They have been
neglected in their home by a government, which did little to support
the athletic prowess of the two talented youngsters.

Lack of transparency, poor asset management and an absence of a
framework for measuring impact of public spending has been the hall
mark of Sports Authority of Goa, the sports wing of the Goa government
which has stone walled the athletes request for 2 windsurfing boards.

The Coelho’s pursuit to get an Asian Games ticket can be attributed to
individual acts of brilliance without much help from the system.

The two Goans attained the qualifying mark for the Asian games at the
Yachting Association of India (YAI) selection trials held in April
16-22 in Chennai.

The trials were held to select the top sailors for inclusion in the
Indian Sailing Team for the 17th Asian Sailing Championship that was
held from June 18-24 and the Asian Games 2018.

“We thank YAI (Yachting Association of India) especially, Capt. Ajay
Narang Member Task Force 2020, who stood by Goan talent and strongly
recommended case to MYAS/SAI for training programme in Thailand under
the Thai coach for 21 days in month of May in preparation for the
Asian Games 2018. The most disheartening is our state association
(Goan Yatching Association), the proposal for procurement of 2
windsurfing boards is still pending for more than 4 months. Katya and
Dayne with their zero self esteem, ready for departure with the old
equipment,” coach-cum-father Donald said on the eve of the departure
to Indonesia.

“The proposal for two windsurfing boards was put up nearly 4 months
ago. This should have been their top priority so they can perform
better, now they have gone (for the Asian Games) with their old
equipment which has seen a lot of wear and tear,” lamented Nelita
Coelho, maternal aunt of the participating sailors in a post on
facebook.

“Indeed, "Historic moment" for the state of Goa to be a part of the
Indian Contingent at the “Asian Games”2018, (but), If the sports
authorities cannot help even after proving their talent, then what
else is left. Goa can never shine,” she added.

“The state has so much of talent but the sports authorities step
motherly treatment shown and corruption galore it took these two so
many years to come this and even then their eyes have not opened,” she
added, while requesting all to share so that “so we can bring out all
the scams and skeletons in the department to get justice for our Goan
budding talent.”

Dayne (20) and Katya (19) have been taking part in the Youth Olympic
Class for boys and girls over the last few years and they will be
competing in the RS:One Mixed Team event whcihis open for sailors
below the age of 22 years.

The RS:One Mixed Team event is been held for the first time at the Asian Games.

Dayne who has been training individually for the last 3 years in
preparation for the Asian games and demonstrated his excellence
achieving silver and bronze medal at 37th Singapore open windsurfing
championship 2018 in RS: One Class. Men and Youth category.

Katya, a student of Ardee School, Porvorim, Sangolda, Penha de França
was the first Indian girl to represent India at Youth Olympic 2014,
held in China and she is eager to give her best.

“I am so proud of my kids; it’s one of the happiest days of my life as
it was my dream as much as theirs to win a medal for the country. It
was a proud moment for us, as Indians, to see the Indian flag flying
high on the shores of Singapore and making it all the more special was
the fact that we celebrated this victory together on the eve of our
66th Republic Day,” Donald had said after Dayne’s win in Singapore
this year.

Donald himself was spellbound by the sport when he was introduced to
it at the age of 20. Donald has been the National Champion in

2018-08-06 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
I find it surprising that the question which is very crucial and
future of Goan football has been ignored either the reporter is ill
informed or ignored.something is amiss down the line..

Here is my take on Goan football

Goa government may have declared football as a state game and is
handing crores of rupees to Goa Football Development Council to
promote the game and nurture young talent but is the Goa Football
Development Council heading in the right direction.

Questions arise as to why Goa Football Development Council and Goa
Football Association are at slugger heads.

If we look at the ground level scenario we find that young
footballers suffer on account of the lack of coordination between the
two football bodies for whom the game should have been more important
than the individual egos and constant bickering.

The Goa Football Development Council, which runs one of the
residential academy and has 37 centres spread all over the state is
still awaiting affiliation with Goa Football Association.

At the last Annual General Body meeting held last month there was no
mention of the affiliation of Goa Football Development Council.

With Goa Football Association not granting them affiliation, the Goa
Football Development Council application with All India Football
Federation to grant them recognition has been shot down.

That’s not the end, at the local front Goa Football Development
Council teams cannot take part in the Goa Football Association
organised age groups tournaments.

The only exposure this players get is the tournaments for inter-centre
and inter schools tournaments.

Take the instance of Cuncolim, which is one of the centre of Goa
Football Development Council. Cuncolim Union, one of the registered
clubs, has not been fielding any age group teams since 2014.

Incidentally the club chairman is Elvis Gomes, president of Goa
Football Association, but the club has no youth development teams, so
much so for the love of football and football development.

A leader must an example by leading from the front, but here a front
runner who has nothing to show against his name in the name of youth
development.

Sources in Goa Football Development Council told me that they are
awaiting the new Executive Committee of Goa Football Association to
take over so that their application for affiliation will be considered
on a favourable basis.

The Goa Football Development Council was an off shoot by members of
Goa Football Association led by Elvis Gomes and Dr Rufino Monteiro
after they lost the Goa Football Association elections.

But with time they fell out.

The Goa Football Development Council got a shot in the arm when Goa
government declared football as a state game and the council got
necessary support from the government in the form of infrastructure
and funding.

Coming back to Goa Football Development Council it has around 150 odd
coaches work with Goa Football Development Council at the 37 centres
functioning in Goa. North Goa has a lion share with 69 coaches for 22
centres. One centre Valpoi has seven coaches while Arambol and Corlim
had five coaches each while some centres functioned with just one
coach.

In South Goa, 44 coaches work at 15 centres, while some have four
coaches—Navelim, Nagao, Fatorda, and Cuncolim, other centres had three
or two coaches while Devabhag just one coach.

The unequal number of centres, in another debatable thing,
traditionally South Goa has been the cnetre of football, but only has
15 centres while the nerve centre of football like Chinchinim which
produced a large of international footballers in the past has been
conveniently ignored.

to topple him from the pedestal. Following are the excerpts from the
tête-à-tête

The Goan: You have completed four years in office. What are the highlights?

Elvis Gomes: The achievements have been many. Apart from the positive
changes in the administrative set-up, we have done a lot of work on
the ground level. Practically every player now has a permanent
registration number and here on after, there would be no writing of
manual cards. There is also an introduction of hologram security
features to prevent impersonation on the field. Besides that, at the
GFA Duler ground, it has been my solo effort to get the floodlights,
the generator set and complete renovation of the dormitory and the
conference room to the extent of making it usable. I saw that all the
1000-odd league matches in the year are held without any compromise.
The introduction of the Women’s League was the icing on the cake.

Budding footballers staying in close vicinity of Cuncolim Union Sports
Project in a vilage in Goa are up in arms against the unsporting
attitude of the office bearers of the club as the sport facilities
constructed at tax payers cost remains out of bounds for local youths.

Enthusiastic youths of Cuncolim staying in close vicinity of Zulpa
Shet wanted to cash in on the recently concluded World Cup enthusiasm
by having their own version in their backyard.

They wanted to enjoy the thrills of playing the poor man’s game and
what better option than to play on the ground which is a stone’s throw
away from their home, constructed by using government funds.

The locked gates of the Cuncolim Union Sports Project, constructed on
the same place where once stood the locally famous Zulpa Shet, were
out of bounds for them. Their spirits has since been dampened. The low
feeling is not on account of the rainy season but more so they have
been denied use of the ground by the club authorities.

We need to know about the condition of women in our state.

The Rupesh Samant case rocked the media a few years back….where are the
victims… what is the status of the cases in various courts…. An update.
Hope it is not a case of women who still awaits justice

The different areas that we need to explore are health care, working
conditions, cultural traditions, human trafficking, sexual and non-sexual
violence.

The idea here is to break down the various factors that have contributed to
the Thomson Reuters finding.
We need to highlight everyday discrimination women face in terms of working
conditions:

Unique irrigation system of Cuncolim village in Goa under threat

Twelve Bhands of Cuncolim:

With the summer approaching the water level in some of the Cuncolim
wells is decreasing….it is because the traditional 12 bhands system –
were water was harvested to increase the level of water in the village
wells has not been followed.

The villagers fear that the old system has crashed in some places and
have demanded that the Cuncolim Municipality or Water Resources
department of the Goa government step in to construct the 12 bhands on
a regular basis every year in the month of October.

Here https://youtu.be/_0e3QKE6_aY Roland Martins of the Goa Civic &
Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) talks about the need to build the
bundhs

It may be noted that Cuncolim, in Indian state of Goa has an
interesting irrigation system - Bara Bhand (twelve bunds) that are
named Zogla bandh, Uskinibandh, Molle -bandh, Vedebandh, Sallebandh
,Folleabandh and Dothra bandh (on the Northern and Eastern sides).
Chireabhandh, Oddabandh, Fontibandh, Dugalebandh, Pairabandh and
Novobandh on Southern and Western side.

Small dams that are built annually in the month of October with mud,
twigs and coconut stem hold or collect water in the streams that
encircle the villages of Cuncolim & Veroda. The water collected is
used for the production of Vangana (Khazana/saline) crop.

The water reservoir "Novo Bandh" used to supply water to the
neighbouring villages of Assolna, Ambelim and Velim. The bandh is
situated between two hills. The Portuguese rebuilt it around 1880 when
the old one had collapsed. At that time the surrounding areas were
flooded and cattle and goats, washed away. Although rebuilt about
hundred years ago, it is still called Novo Bandh-new bund. Initially
the local Panchayat maintained the reservoir. Each year an auction for
opening and closing the tank known as "Vagzuem Tanki" was conducted.

But things are changing …with people demanding construction of bhands
to tide over the water supply in the village and government steeping
in builds the bhands. the recent one in Cottamol.

Re: [Goanet] Press Conference - 3rd All India Tata Sky Volleyball Championship

2016-04-14 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Times of India report has all the details, so what is this Press confernce
for? Prakash Dessai?

Cuncolim Union will satiate the thirst of volleyball lovers for top-notch
volleyball action after confirming the third edition of the All India
volleyball tournament which will commence on April 19.

The five-day tournament has attracted top teams from across the country and
will be played at the Cuncolim volleyball court, near the bus stand.
Matches will commence at 8pm and will be preceded by an entertainment
programme with plans afoot to invite Bollywood actor Nana Patekar for the
final to be played on April 23.

On the court, the action could be explosive as defending champions Haryana
State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC) gets ready to defend their
title. The defending champions, though, will face stiff resistance from
ONGC Dehradun, who are returning to Goa after missing out on last year's
event due to suspension. They will be joined by Bharat Petroleum
Corporation Ltd (BPCL), who will be favourites for the title, alongside
Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and LIC Mumbai.

"We have a better line-up of teams this year. I am sure that volleyball
fans from across the state will be delighted with what these teams have to
offer," said Cuncolim Union president Elvis Gomes.

International players like Tom Joseph, Jerome Vinith, Ranjit Singh,
Subbarao, Vinit Kumar, Sarang Lal, Kartik and Marshall Thomas are expected
to be part of the tournament. Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Chennai, who have
several international players in their ranks had also confirmed
participation but pulled out after three of their star players picked up
injuries last week.

The Goan interest at the tournament will be kept alive by Cuncolim Union
who have invited outstation players to represent them. Goa's best players
like Rama Dhawaskar (Papu) and Aaron Pereira will be part of the Cuncolim
Union squad and will be joined by outstation players in an attempt to at
least qualify for the semifinals.

Holy Ghost church or Holy Spirit church?, relying on Wikipedia is quite a
tricky thing.
The five Jesuit priests were proclaimed as Martyrs of Cuncolim but the
layman were ignored, can justice be done to them (layman) in the present
day era when as per your posting they were ignored for the then prevailing
rules. Cecil, as one of the person who has made a significant contribution
to Goa society, you, I think is in a position to make a strong case for the
honour of martyrdom for those ignored by the Catholic Church.

This is a white wash or in other words fooling people,
People like Reginaldo may be opposed to Church -Hill coming to congress
But when Kumpar Luizinho has met him in two unofficial meeting and every
has been set and decided and he has taken Madame Sonia's nod, can anyone
stop it,
They have no care for the people, it is only people like you rant,
They know that BJP has dug their own grave and they have good chances of
bouncing back.
They have looted together and will combine to loot again, not harm in
saying that.
No wonder one does not become a millionaire and takes advantage of the
Volutnary Disclosure Scheme offered bu the central governemtn to convert
your ill-gotten wealth into white money.
and do you know how many apartments, these two kumpars have on the coastal
belt.
they have many, Churchill gives them to his players to stay but the more
cunning and suave one gives to his friends and relatives based outside
India when they come on holidays.
Some of his relatives and friends who came to his son's wedding were housed
in such apartments in benaulim and Cavelossim.
I know for sure as one of his relative was staying in Lotus apartments in
benaulim
The chors will continue to loot there is no doubt about it

Calling Makkod and Negro is racism but saying Hampri (Black), and Ghantis
is not. BTW wish to know what is the English word for Kapules ? which has
mentioned in the story done by Herald newspaper on August 6.

Disturbing trend emerges in Goan football

Short-term player’s contracts rule the roost at Goa Professional League

Disturbing trend emerges in Goan football

Daulat Rodrigues, 28, is a ‘professional’ football player, hails from
Cuncolim and is due to play for one of the low-budgeted club in the Goa
Professional League (GPL). He will earn around two lakhs if agrees to sign
a four-month contract for the upcoming GPL event with one of the Goan club.

Daulat has a difficult choice, like many of the so called ‘professional’
football players of Goa, he either can opt for a full one-year contract or
a short four-month contract, the choice is his.

But does he have a choice? Certainly not say football officials who know a
thing or two about the murky behind the scenes which ail Goan football.

First and foremost the low-budget Goan clubs of GPL opt for short contracts
which help them to cut on the budget.

The clubs sole aim to play in the Goa-related league and tournaments. Gone
are the days when players used to get paid for the entire season. The trend
has since changed. It is good for the clubs but bad for the players,
especially for those who do not have much bargaining power (not in demand).

>From the club perspective paying a player for the entire season does not
make it a fit case for a perfect business model.

>From the sporting point also it does not make sense. Gone are the days when
Goan clubs use to be in high demand and used to be invited for football
tournaments in many parts of India. The list was endless, football
officials and players of yesterday years recall.

The nostalgic memories which players recall are those of the pre-National
League (now I-league) days when many all-India tournaments used to take
place all over the country. With the advent of the National League many a
tournaments have died a slow death as they either clashed with the League
or could not fit into the All India Football Federation calendar.

The Rovers Cup in Mumbai and several tournaments in South India, Goans were
in high demand.

Participation in these tournaments gave the clubs some revenue and mileage
for the players. But all that has been consigned to history for the time
being.

So the players are happy to ply their trade for two or four months and
happy with their pay packet. But the day part is that they rust for the
next eight months, a period when they are seen playing for their respective
village clubs in the highly popular Inter-village football tournaments.

According to GPL guidelines, a club has to register nine Non-amateur
players and their contract must be registered with the Goa Football
Association, while the rest of the players can be amateurs.

But is there a clause on the maximum and minimum months which specifies the
number of months a club can enter into a contract with a player is one of
the grey areas.

A number of clauses in the GPL need to be changed with the changing times
and it will be in the fitness of things that GFA appoint a committee to
study what can be done in the best interests of football and footballers
and revamp the rules where it is needed.

Football administrators owe the footballers a service and setting things
in order the off-field worries and caring for them should be the top
priority.

Goan football gone, going…….. down the drain
By Armstrong Vaz
Goan football is heading towards turbulent times. The alarm bells were
ringing for long. The intensity has increased and reached its peak. Wilred
Leisure has opened the floodgates of what is forecasted to be a tsunami.

Wilred’s pulling out from the ten-team Goa Professional League (GPL), which
is due to start in August, is one of the first major setback for the new
Executive Committee of Goa Football Association (GFA), which took charge on
July 27.
