Dear Friends, Just returned home from the well orchestrated Global Goan Convention in Oman, met a lot of dignitaries, MLA's (present and past) respectable friends (known and made more like minded friends too). Some of the Hot topics of the Convention was: 1. Properties in Goa sold to elite Delhites or elite NON GOANS 2. Changes and Change needed within us for a Better Goa. My humble request Goan brothers and sisters NOT to sell your ancestral properties to these elite Delhites or Non Goans just for a few crores.. Goa being your mother land and selling your ancestral houses is like selling your MOTHER.. It was rightly said, by one of the speakers at this GGC in Oman, that these crores will get over fast and you will wondering why did i sell my property owned by my parents, think of your children, grand children they can use these properties instead of having this so called Mega building projects and in turn cutting down hills and forest and losing the greenery to these so call projects. Think of our environment. Think Green. I hail from Nerul and it is shocking to see a decent two bedroom flat in Nerul, Bardez cost something like 58 laks ( which I cant afford) and built on some marshy land by some rich landlord, land sold to this landlord by some Goan from the village who felt, money in crores would make more sense put in the bank rather than have a ancestral house in Nerul the place where they were born and bred. This not only sad but pathetic, and for sure the Panchayat or the MLA of the place has or had gladly endorsed the necessary transaction papers (with a few lakhs in their own pocket). Lets us GOANS not have this attitude MAKKA KITE PODLA attitude. who cares who stays on our land as long as we have become rich. In this case why call your self a GOAN rather be called literally NON GOAN. Looking forward to a more of these conventions, but lets put in action what ever the speakers spoke on before we meet again next year. Best wishes, THE BACK GROUND STORY OF CARL NARONHA AND WHY YOU ARE INVOLVED. --- My 20 yr old son ended up as a quadriplegic (paralysed chest below) following an accident in Dubai in Oct 2007. He was treated in India for six months for C6 spine injury with vigorous physiotherapy. He is now in Dubai completely dependent on a caretaker for his daily routine. He needs to use adaptive devices to be able to achieve some level of Independence. Some of the adaptive devices are the standing frame, powered wheelchair, motorised cycling machine, commode chair with special adaptive features, a ramp for the staircase (we live on the first floor with no lift in the building,hence we need to install aramp that will help us move him in and out of the house on his wheelchair especially for his medical checkup), etc. These are exorbitantly priced and need to be imported through an authorised dealer in Dubai. The standing frame costs Dhs 10,000, Powered Wheel Chair costs approx. Dhs 30,000, Commode Chair approx. Dhs 1000. We are already incurring heavy expenditure towards his medical supplies given the special nursing care that needs to be administered on a daily basis. Carl is much better than what he was when at Rashid - still a long way to go - he still has no sensation below his chest, can sit with assistance and continues to be dependent on a caretaker for his daily routine. We still have not found a physiotherapist who can come home to help out with his daily exercise routine so we do it ourselves but that's not enough. Carl also requires to do his standing exercises which he needs to be using an O Frame or Standing Frame. He would also need a powered wheel chair to be able to move in and out of the house which he cant do right now because we do not have a lift and we need to build a ramp which again involves huge expenditure. We cannot shift to a new rental as it is still unaffordable. PS Please note that if any money over this target is collected, this will also be handed over to the family to help build a ramp and purchase other adaptive devices. Carl also required some seat-buckles and straps, for which we are thankful to Emirates Airlines for providing the same. In the Western world, there are many adaptive devices which allow patients like Carl to lead a dignified, fairly independent life. These include standing frames, modified commodes and motorized wheel-chairs, but are beyond the reach of a middle-class family. Can we all contribute towards purchasing a motorized wheel-chair for Carl as a start? It costs about AED 30,000.
