[Goanet] Konkani Drama ‘Ghonvdho’ performs to great applause in Kuwait!
Konkani Drama ‘Ghonvdho’ performs to great applause in Kuwait!:::By Gasper Crasto:::Kuwait: Konkani drama ‘Ghonvdho’ (Mason) written and directed by Nazy Rod and staged at the Kuwait Medical Association Hall on 18th May 2012 provided top-class entertainment to the audience. The drama presented by Kuwait’s popular singers Lopes Brothers was initially scheduled to be held on 11th May but was postponed due to non-availability of some visiting artistes from Goa.The story of ‘Ghonvdho’ depicts life of a faithful wife (played by Irene Vaz) while her husband (Sylvester Vaz) holds an affair with his best friend’s(Braz de Parra) wife who happens to be his ex-girlfriend. Perhaps the title ‘Ghonvdho’ (mason) left everyone guessing till the end as the audience were glued to their seats till the last curtain. The title means that everyone is accountable to be a ‘Ghonvdho’ (mason) of their own homes, a master of their own fate for the success or disaster, happiness or failure in life. The drama proved once again that some of the most talented Konkani artistes arebased in Kuwait. Superstar Sylvester Vaz, with his dynamic presence, was at hissuper-best in the lead role. His portrayal of the husband was enacted to greatperfection and commitment. The character couldn’t be played any better. Hisacting with his ‘own’ wife Irene brought a sense of ‘reality’ on stage; theygelled splendidly well. Irene looked gracious in her costumes and her dialogue delivery was flawless. She showed class in style and the ‘cantos’ of an ‘actress’ which earned her fame in so many dramas of famous playwright and Goan Shakespeare Rosario Rodrigues years ago. Irene also played a double enacting the other woman which, however, left many in the audience confused, and some bewildered by her fast-changing attire!Braz Rodrigues (Braz de Parra) portrayed the ‘friend’ with great tact, timing and a wealth of voice in his dialogues. Perfect! Cajetan de Sanvordem did his part well too, a cakewalk act for the hardened campaigner.Special mention must go to little Joshua Gonsalves, a child artiste who did his role extremely well for his age - without a trace nervousness or hiccups. Lawry Miranda and Francis Dias made their presence felt too with cameo roles. Comedian Jr. Simla was fabulous on stage. His comedy was simply fantastic. Although his ‘entries’ on stage were the most by any artiste, he was easily the ‘darling of the audience’ specially for his naïve ‘acting’ and ‘clean’ dialogues. The comedian was certainly one of the stars of the show.Simla was accompanied in the comedy skits by Mangalorean star Lucy Aranha. Together, they made a great pair, and pulled off a rib-tickling, hilarious comedy. Apparently, the pair was called to perform just 3 days prior to the show as back-up for the ‘visiting’ artistes. The comedy acts were supported by Luis D’Costa (Luis de Sanguem) in a polished role of a Hindu goldsmith, and comedian Salu Faleiro. Salu Faleiro, in the character of Timan (aunty), sent pills of laughter around for his amusing costume and the ‘village-oldy’ language that he used throughout. The guy would absolutely be a ‘hit’ should he enact the same character back in Goan dramas.Popular visiting artistes Marcus Vaz and Francis de Tuem left a mark on the audience with their meaningful and captivating songs. The stars were strongly applauded by the audience and encored even for ‘decent’ solos. While the two were excellent in their comedy duo, dressed as females which warranted tremendous ‘phew phews’ demanding more repeats, Francis de Tuem was called back on stage atleast 5 times for his song on ‘New generationgirls and boys’.Among the local artistes who rendered their songs to great applause were Lopes Brothers (2 duos) and their sister Agnes. The elder of the Lopes Brothers, Alex, was remarkably stylish and looked like a top-class, professional singer while Michael was marvellous with his segundo voice. Agnes sang with poise, confidence and a glow on her face which was a delight to watch. Irene and Sylvester Vaz sang an exemplary duet while Sylvester Vaz later sang a magnificent solo. Also, there were songs by Seby Mascarenhas, Edward Estebeiro, Michael Fernandes (Micky), Manuel Goes, etc. Director Nazy Rod too took to the stage to feature in a beautiful ‘quartet’ with Agnes, Irene and Michael Lopes. Opening Chorus of the drama, a well composed song in a unique manner, was sung by Agnes-Alex, Edward-Seby, and Irene-Sylvester; each pair singing one verse and chorus. Musical score provided by Shahu and his troupe brought great Goan ambience and ‘feeling’ in the hall.Stage setting and lights were super while Anand D’Souza stepped in right intime to give that crystal clear sound. At a short felicitation during the interval, Marcus Vaz and Francis de Tuem along with Joshua Gonsalves were felicitated for their outstanding performance in the drama. Mementos were presented to these artistes as a

[Goanet] Goa Maroons Crowned Champions in a Spectacular Finish: J.P. D'Mello KIFF League in Kuwait
:::Kuwait Goans finish 2nd, Rising Stars take 3rd place::: By Gasper Crasto Kuwait: Goan Overseas Association (G.O.A) popularly known as Goa Maroons won the prestigious J.P. D’Mello Memorial KIFF League Trophy defeating Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) 4-3 in the final played at the ‘Peace & Friendship’ Stadium on 10th June 2011. The season ending match of the Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF), was balanced in terms of performance in the first half. However it was Maroons who surprised KGA with an early lead. Prolific scorer Kennedy Ferrao broke the KGA off-side trap by a mile and took his time to round off the goalkeeper before tapping into the empty net. On the other hand Maroons goalkeeper Guilerme Gomes was able to defend on a number of occasions. KGA who steadily organized themselves in the second half showed class, character and a superb fighting spirit, attacking from all ends with medio Bernard Pires dazzling in the centre. Ismayil, Luis Dias Vitorin Menezes, Valente, Jacob Dias, Edward Dias, Cristo Colaco, Tiago Fernandes, Anil Thakuri and Vico D’Souza also excelled for KGA. With minutes left for the final whistle KGA drew level through Josse Fernandes who headed home from a corner kick taken by Bernard (1-1). The extra-time produced no result which sent the teams into a penalty shootout. Maroons, already declared season’s champions for a super performance throughout, were determined to finish on a high. Goalkeeper Guilerme saved the last penalty in the tie-breaker to clinch victory for the Champions. Ian D’Souza, Gabriel Fernandes and Bonny Niasso scored for Maroons, while only Valente and John Costa were on target for KGA. [Goanet] Shahu's troupe to tour UK for a Konkani Musical
Shahu's troupe to tour UK for a Konkani Musical :::Gasper Crasto for www.goa-world.com ::: Kuwait: Kuwait based musician Shahu will travel with a galaxy of top Goan artistes from Kuwait on a tour of UK for a Konkani comedy musical show entitled ‘Tiatrist’ scheduled to be staged at Wembley and Swindon on 19th and 26th June respectively. The star cast of the show includes well-known artistes Cajetan de Sanvordem, Hitman of Konkani Stage Sylvester Vaz, Gracy Morais, Michael D’Silva, Bab Agnelo, Comedy Queen Querobina, Comedian Mario de Majorda, Maestro Shahu and above all famous Goan Comedian Philip Pereira. The troupe will perform sensational skits with rib-tickling comedy and a number of songs including a unique opening chorus. The first show will be staged on June 11 at Copland College, Wembley, Middlesex at 1pm while there will be 2 shows in Swindon at St. Joseph’s Catholic College – the first starting at 11.30am and the other at 6pm. Amongst the contemporary big names of Goan musicians, the name of Shahu (Francis) Almeida hailing from Macasana - Goa, shines amongst the stellar bracket of Goa's top-notch musicians with his indispensable contribution towards the art. Shahu may be recognized more in the genre of dramas and he has become most popular in this art after coming to Kuwait. But behind his simplicity, is the unmistakable halo of his talent as a star musician of Goan bands as well apart from dramas, with his past penchant and passion for innovative, brilliant music, Shahu has continued on what he loves to do best – hypnotize his listeners to a magical sway with his band 2#Sharp as well. Few however know that Shahu, a dynamic talent with his keyboard, began his tryst with music drumming his way into the hearts of his school-mates at his school's Annual Gatherings, propelling him into the musical horizon forever. He is the alumnus of St. Francis Xavier H. School Macazana and Guardian Angel College, Sanvordem. Evolving into an ace drummer, he had the rare and splendid opportunity of honing his musical skills under the baton of Chris Perry, the eternal icon and consummate genius of Goan music and playing alongside his son Errol Perry. With music flowing in his veins, his drum beats reverberated in many well-known Goan bands of the nineties such as 'Ultimate', 'Magic Touch', The News', 'Human Status', 'Black Lace', etc, to name a few. Shahu disclosed That he played in over 1000 weddings as a drummer with these groups. But it was his evolution into a keyboardist that shot him into instant fame. Interestingly, Shahu switched over to the keyboards not on his own volition but at the suggestion of Fr. Livio D'Mello under whose cudgel he played for the choir at St. Francis Xavier's church, Macasana. From then on there was no looking back. Shahu has indeed come a long way with his association with music spanning over a decade. His musical creativity was elevated further after his arrival in Kuwait in October 1999. He began with a bang in Kuwait-based director Jose Rod's unmatched Broadway hit 'Tujem Nanv Vhodd zaum' which was staged all over the Middle East and back home in Goa. Shahu has also played in Muscat, Doha, Bahrain, Bangalore, Darjeeling, etc, and performed for top directors such as Prem Kumar, Roseferns, Jacob, Menino de Bandar, Pascoal Rodrigues, C.D. Silva, John D' Silva, Ben Evangelist, Rosario Rodrigues, etc, apart from all the directors in Kuwait. He also did a short musical stint playing live music at Dubai's famous Viva Goa Restaurant. Speaking on his experience and performance Shahu said, "I used to enjoy playing at the Rock Greenal annual musical show at Curtorim." Shahu says his most challenging one-man performance was in Mini Mario's Kiteak Ho Bazar Cholta?' staged in Kuwait in April 2007. "I had to pick-up the notes on the troupe's arrival on the morning of the show and I can proudly say that I played to perfection without proper rehearsals," Says Shahu, further adding, "with musical notes handy, I can play non stop music for over 8 hours. Shahu can be aptly described as a consummate artist with an alluring passion and drive for music. Undoubtedly his heart thumps 'musical' beats, for when it comes to music he is simply indefatigable, endowed with an amazing genius -- coupled with a prodigious memory for music. Shahu reached the highpoint of his career when he was roped in as a music composer by the doyen of Konkani stage, the legendary Rosario Rodrigues wherein his captivating rhythm set aflame many of the unforgettable hits like 'Hanv Kallukant Sandlim' where Shahu pioneered the unique 'one man band concept providing the entire spectrum of music on a single keyboard! Under the ace director's able tutelage Shahu had a free rein toying with refreshing, innovative ideas which enabled him to break new grounds by pushing hard the frontiers of Goan music. With sky being the limit, Shahu
[Goanet] Goan teams to fight for top honors at Kuwait’s Kazma Stadium: J P D’Mello Memorial Trophy (K.I.F.F) League
J P D’Mello Memorial Trophy (K.I.F.F) League ::Goan teams to fight for top honors at Kuwait’s Kazma Stadium::: By Gasper Crasto, www.goa-world.com , Kuwait Kuwait: Best teams in the world are always judged by their supremacy in their respective leagues. In a just concluded season, the champions in England are Manchester United, Barcelona FC in Spain, AC Milan in Italy, Qadsiya SC in Kuwait, and Salgaocar FC in India. In a lesser world of Indian expatriates in Kuwait, two Goan clubs will compete for top honors in the final of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (K.I.F.F) League 2010-11 for the prestigious J.P. D’Mello Trophy. The Goan outfits – popular Goa Maroons, and Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) reached the final after beating their rivals in ‘neck-and-neck’ semifinal battles reminiscent of any grueling and ferocious sport in the world. While KGA came from behind a 0-2 deficit to maraud defending champions United Friends Club 5-2, Goa Maroons scored a 2-1 victory over Rising Stars in a match marred by controversy and chaos. Both the games played in soaring temperatures nearing 50˚C kept the spectators on tenterhooks and made hot news over the weekend among die-hard Indian football followers in Kuwait as well as back home. :::United Friends v/s Kuwait Goan Association::: United Friends Club (UFC) will rue themselves for squandering a 2-0 lead taken off the boots of Alexandro Gomes and Denzil Jadhav early into the match. But then, amateur teams are no Barcelonas to play ball possession and finish off such a wonderful advantage of 2 goals. The joy of UFC, champions of the league in 1999, 2003 and 2010, was short lived as they saw their fort crumbling, mainly due to a non-existing midfield. Medio Remedio Fernandes, Edwin Dias and Darwin looked drained out in the second half, and the efforts of hardworking striker Godwin Fernandes and Hemanth Kumar to fall back in aid of central defenders Teotonio and Mauricio Simoes was not just enough. KGA, who played a ‘foxy, wait and grab’ game, made the best of all opportunities scoring the goals in quick succession within a space of 20 minutes to turn the tables over UFC (5-2). The goalscorers for KGA were Vitorino Menezes (2 goals), Anil Thakuri (1 goal) and substitute Josse Fernandes (2 goals). The ‘livewire’ in KGA ranks was former East Bengal and Salgaocar player Bernard Pires who controlled the entire game. The untiring Vitorino Menezes, who was later declared man of the match, was also amazing. However, the mastermind of the KGA team this season has been their captain Tiago Fernandes. The hardened warrior who started his football in the late 80s playing for Goa and later Salgaocars and Dempos still rules the roost (more than 20 years later) with precision, goal-scoring passes and long range shots. KGA will depend much on this iconic player to beat Kuwait’s most popular team Goa Maroons in the grand final of the league. :::GOA Maroons v/s Rising Stars::: Winning over tough rivals is great but winning with discipline is a greater than the sweetest of victories. Goa Maroons and Rising Stars, perhaps the oldest existing clubs under KIFF, had everything at stake in the match. Both teams wanted to prove their superiority and beat the other for a place in the final which is equivalent of a Champions League appearance for most players and fans. It was Maroons who took the lead midway into the first session. The goal was probably the result of a move planned in training, which saw medio Terrence Carvalho passing the ball down the line to Bonny, who crossed at the top of box. Elvis D’Souza, one of Maroons’ swiftest players, who had raced from the centre line met the pass and placed it past Rising keeper Lusiano Fernandes (1-0). Maroons were in total control for most part of the game. Carlos D’Sa, Gabriel Fernandes, Regi Rodrigues, Sandy Fernandes and captain Ian D’Souza were excellent throughout the match. Prolific scorer John Kennedy scored the other goal for Maroons (2-0). Rising Star’s main striker Maveli Fajilu pulled one back which brought excitement to the match and charged up the footballers. With 8 minutes left for the final whistle and Maroons eading 2-1, the match went into bad weathers when Rising Stars defender Vadakath Balagopal rushed to the assistant referee on the far touchline questioning an offside decision which he alleged was not pulled off. His altercation and misconduct with the official warranted him a straight red card which was however not accepted sportingly by the Rising players. Some players argued while others walked off the field prompting the official to flash a yellow card to Rising’s star player Fajilu who had taken off his jersey. The card turned out to be Fajilu’s second yellow of the match. As a rule, it was followed by a red. Rising players protested vehemently and did not continue the game thereafter. The match was abandoned; Maroons were later declared winners by a 2-1 margin. :::Finals on 10th June 2011 at Kazm
[Goanet] Focus on KIFF League after the election of FIFA Presidency
KGA face UFC; Goa Maroons v/s Rising Stars :::Focus on KIFF League after the election of FIFA Presidency::: Kuwait, Jun 1: With much of the soccer season completed across the globe, and the focus on the election of FIFA president accomplished, Kuwait Indians are now focused – with their eyes on the prestigious KIFF league 2010-11 J P D’Mello Memorial Rolling Trophy organized under the patronage of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF). The culminating semi finals of the league will be played on Friday, June 3, 2011 on MOH ground, Shuwaikh. The matches will be officiated by KIFF referees. On account of the extreme heat nearing 50 degrees, the matches will commence early in the morning with the first game scheduled at 6.45 am. In the first match of the day, strong challengers Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) will face defending champions United Friends Club (UFC) while the other semifinal will see popular Goan Maroons facing a strong challenge of a young and spirited Rising Stars. KGA have been excellent all season but shuffling players in different positions has created a loss of momentum and consistency. KGA’s approach will depend much on the moods of their star player Bernard Pires along with other play makers such as Jimmy, Vitorin and veteran Tiago Fernandes. United Friends are known to rise to the occasion without being too classy. Juzer Bankoda, Hemanth Kumar, Edwin Dias, Remedio Fernandes, Godwin Fernandes, Xavier Costa, Darwin D’Cruz, Teotonio Fernandes, Mauricio Simoes, Peter D’Souza and Antonio Fernandes and goalkeeper Martin Dias are some of the stars of UFC. Maroons consisting of popular players such as Ian D’Souza, Regi, Terence, Steven, etc, possess a tremendous team. Their superiority shows in ball possession which can easily put the opponents on the backfoot. Rising Stars, however, are eager to earn their chance to make it the prestigious final. Their players have the ability to display great stamina in the summer heat of Kuwait. Rising Stars president Lawry Pinto will bank on his prolific striker Faizilu to score the goals for his team. According to KIFF president Fidelis Fernandes, 'man of the match' awards sponsored by Al Mulla International Exchange Company will be presented after each match. Apart from the League, the KIFF established in 1984 conducts 11-aside and 7-aside tournaments organized by clubs affiliated to KIFF. J P D’Mello Memorial Rolling Trophy - KIFF League is named after late Jerome Pascoal DMello (popularly known in India and Kuwait as J P). Hailing from Bombay, D’Mello lived and worked in Kuwait and was the prime architect in conceiving the idea of forming KIFF. A former FIFA referee and member of Asian Football Confederation Referees' Committee and former honorary secretary and member of Bombay Referees' Association, D’Mello passed away in 1994.

[Goanet] Goa Maroons to face Navelim in quarters: Alvernaz-Lalush Alemao NYC Trophy
:::Alvernaz-Lalush Alemao NYC Trophy::: Goa Maroons to face Navelim in quarters :::By Gasper Crasto / Kuwait::: Kuwait, Mar 8: Football in this part of the world is arguably the number one sport for expatriate Indians. The atmosphere created at some of the matches is simply amazing! In the first round matches of the Late Alvernaz-Lalush Alemao NYC Trophy played at MoH Grounds, Shuwaikh, teams had to play in an altogether different atmosphere. The whole of Kuwait was engulfed in thick dust and fog Friday morning, 4th March 2011. And it was windy as well. Teams battled out in trying conditions with enthusiastic spectators cheering and enjoying in the thrill. GOA Maroons who were favorites to win their first round easily had to fight tooth and nail to overcome FC Sparx. The popular Maroons consisting of Ian, Regi, Terence, Steven, etc, displayed tremendous team work. Their superiority showed in ball possession that put FC Sparx on the back foot right from the kick-off. Maroons created many chances but their forwards lacked the killer punch in a goalless first half. However, Maroons managed to find some space early into the second half and score the first goal through Albert (1-0). Kennedy and Albert then put in 2 more goals to make the match safe. Goa Maroons will next meet hosts and defending champions Navelim Youth Centre in the quarter finals. Santos FC playing in the first round showed grit and determination in their match against Indian Strikers with striker Cruzinho finding the target in the first half. In the second half, Jagadesh equalized for Indian Strikers and in another 5 minutes, they took the lead through Roy Pathrose. Few minutes before the final whistle, Abdullah scored the equalizer for Santosh to take the match to extra time and the tie-breaker. Indian Strikers proved be better shooters ending the tie-breaker with a 4 -2 score. In another match, DHL with a formidable line-up got past YRC Rising Stars in the tie-breaker. It was an evenly contested match. Both teams missed some key players through injury or caution? Rising Stars held an edge in the first half with a couple of goal bound moves. DHL had a good opportunity to take the lead when Jose Colaco was brought down in the box but off the resultant spot-kick Godfrey ballooned over the goal post. The match was more physical in the second half. Rising Stars’ Thallaparambil was flashed a red card for elbowing a DHL defender and Rising were reduced to 10 men. Surprisingly, it was Rising who took the lead through Maveli Fajilu (1-0) DHL equalized through Anthony Vincent to level the scores 1-1. In the extra time, neither team wanted to take chances with play was confined to midfield. In the penalty shootout Rising Stars panicked as DHL goalkeeper saved important kicks from Jai John, Prakashan, Shymmlal. DHL won 3-1. [Goanet] MLA Reginaldo Lourenco arrives in Kuwait
MLA Reginaldo Lourenco arrives in Kuwait :::By Gasper Crasto, Kuwait::: Kuwait: Mr. Reginaldo Alexio Lourenco, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Curtorim Constituency and Chairman, Public Planning Development Authority (North Goa) arrived in Kuwait last night (23rd February 2011). He was received at Kuwait International airport by Curtorcares United President Amaldo Fernandes and members of the club. Mr. Reginaldo was accompanied by former Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeeper and team manager Arnold Costa. Reginaldo will be the chief guest for the XV Edition of 7-a-side football tournament to be organized by Curtorcares at the Ministry of Health (MOH) Grounds, Shuwaikh on Friday, 25th February 2011. The MLA is specially invited from the village of Curtorim to grace the occasion. The tournament affiliated to Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) is held under the leadership of Curtorcares President Amaldo Fernandes. Matches will commence from 7:00 a.m and will be officiated by KIFF referees. All football lovers are invited to attend. For more details, please call 99763922 - Amaldo Fernandes, President; 97239788 - Zico Fernandes, Secretary; 97658628 - Nicholas Rebello, Coordinator, etc. :::About Reginaldo Lourenco::: On 5th October 1969 was born the eldest child of Jose Inacio Lourenco and Fernanda Melo Lourenco who was baptized as Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco with the first name being that of the Patron of their village Curtorim – St. Alex. As helping people came naturally to Reginaldo Lourenco, he got more and more involved in social work, which in the course of time led to politics. In 2000 he was elected from Curtorim to the South Goa Zilla Parishad and in 2005, he became the chairperson of the South Goa Zilla Parishad. At the 2007 general elections to the Goa Legislative Assembly he was declared elected from the Curtorim constituency on 7th June 2007 in a battle akin to the Biblical fight between David and Goliath as Reginaldo Lourenco defeated a long serving MLA who had occupied various ministerial position including that of the Chief Minister. Being a MLA, he has been appointed member of Committee on Petitions, Committee on Delegated Legislation, Committee on Public Undertakings and was appointed as Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on Education, Sports & Information and recently as Chairman of Committee on Government Assurances. Not one to sit with mere titles, he resigned as a Member of the Privileges Committee. Due to his keen interest in protection of environment, Reginald in 2006 established the Curtorim Co-operative Service Society with the primary aim to make his home village of Curtorim the ‘granary of Salcete’ as it was recognized in the days of yore. Through this society, he is now providing tractors free of cost to farmers wanting to cultivate their land in Curtorim and has recently purchased a combined harvester, which is the first in Goa. For the last two harvesting seasons, the Society hired the harvester from Devangere, Karnataka and it proved to be a big boon to farmers. Being down to earth, Reginaldo Lourenco was the only MLA to be a member of the Village level committee constituted to prepare the Draft Regional Plan 2021 at micro level as he truly believes in participatory governance rather than sitting on protocol. Due to his commitment to develop the Scheduled Tribes, of which many reside in his constituency, he has been organizing very successful Scheduled Tribes conventions in his constituency for the last two years, where the various government schemes available to them are explained in detail to this backward section of society. As an MLA, Reginald Lourenco has ensured that the required development works in the constituency are undertaken. But what is significant is that he is one of those rare MLAs who takes his responsibility of being a legislator very seriously and that is the reason why he moved a Private Member’s Bill to regularize Goa’s favourite sport dhirio, which had earned notoriety following its ban by the High Court of Bombay at Panaji. While for the last nearly 10 years dhirios were conducted clandestinely, following Reginald’s move, they may be organized legally and with honour now. Reginald is married to Francesca Pinto Carvalho who understands his wants and needs very well and that is why when he is busy with his social work, she tends to their two cherubs Amanda and Aliya. Rosary Ferns, who died an untimely death on 12th January 2011 while on holidays in Goa, left a permanent legacy and will be remembered for a long, long time to come for his contribution towards drama and art in the form of VCDs, CDs and cassettes. Konkan people who were fortunate enough to see Rosary Ferns on stage will perhaps never ever see another star of his calibre – a great playwright, philosophical composer and singer. Kuwait Konkani Kendr (KKK) organized a condolence assembly on Wednesday 17th February 2011 at Village Inn, Kuwait City to pay homage to the star who spent much of his life in Kuwait. Well-known Goan writer and social activist Veronica Fernandes conducted the meeting which was attended by invited guests from the Goan and Mangalorean communities. Prominent Konkani stage artistes Mendes Brothers namely Felix – Xavier – Derek, who acted in the shows directed by Rosary Ferns and who always admired Rosary for his Tiatro skills, were among the crowd along with other significant personalities. Luis Cardoso, Vice President and one of the pillars of KKK, a great lover of Konkani and Goa was also present. KKK Gen. Secretary Mario Rebello, a leader of Konkani movement in Kuwait contributing immensely for the cause of Konkani, commenced the gathering with a short prayer. In his emotional speech, Veronica Fernandes, one of the living encyclopedias on tiatr, enlightened the audience on the greatness of Rosary Ferns with numerous quotes. “We have lost a great Goan personality, famous for his remarkable dramas, a ‘wisdomatic’ composer, and a singer of immense talent,” stated Veronica. Veronica described his close association with Rosary Ferns and sang a heartrending ‘Motet’ accompanied by musician Aggie D’Silva on the clarinet, which welled the eyes of many bringing recollections of this conventional composition usually sung during the lent season. As per Veronica, this was the best item of his repertoire liked by Rosary. Veronica later declared that “Rosary’s loss was not just for Goans, but for the entire Konkan community.” It should be noted Rosary’s last drama ‘Kuwait Soddun Vetana’ (Whilst leaving Kuwait) was staged both by the Goan and Mangalorean Community. Gulf Goans E-Newsletters moderator Gasper Almeida summarized his observations about Rosary Ferns over the last two decades stressing that one should not forget the journalistic objectivity, while reporting or getting the issues focused. “I must admit that I’am in awe of Rosary Ferns. He was a man with unlimited energy and a generosity of spirit able to withstand all kind of attacks, criticisms and prejudices with a smile and an open mind. He had no comments, no ill feelings, no rhymes nor lyrics on anyone. I have had the pleasure of meeting Rosary Ferns and interacting with him on many occasions.” “We have lost him, but his songs and works on the Konkani stage will last forever,” he concluded whilst announcing a message by goa-world.com founder Ulysses Menezes dedicating a Glorious Singers’ Section on the online www Goa-world.com radio station in remembrance of Rosary’s contribution towards Goa and the Konkani language in general. Fidelis Fernandes, brother of Rosary, spoke on the life of the beloved icon terming Rosary’s birth into this world as a miraculous phenomenon and his life a ‘pride of the family’. “Rosary was born with stagecraft in his blood. his birth was rather miraculous. Doctors had informed my father that due to pregnancy complications, there was little or no chance of his survival, but the power of prayers overcame medical limitations and my mother delivered a healthy baby boy on 16th August 1962, whom they named Rosary Menino in gratitude of the intercession of Mother Mary and Menino Jesus at the time of delivery,” disclosed Fidelis in a voice choked with emotions. He further added, “Tiatro to Rosary was in the blood. Rosary started acting, Writing tiatros, one act plays, composing and singing songs at the age of 12.” Peter Fernandes, other brother of Rosary was also present. A close admirer of Rosary Ferns, Fr. Melvin D’Cunha, former Vicar of Holy Family Cathedral and on a visit to Kuwait, said, “Rosary’s life was a lesson for all to disclose god-given talents to the world.” Lawry Pinto highlighted the significance of Rosary Ferns among the Mangalorean community. He said, “Rosary was the bridge between Mangaloreans and Goans which helped to bring the two Konkan communities together in friendship.” Ms Ida D’Silva underlined Rosary’s contribution to the Konkani world adding “Rosary’s works will remain forever immortal.” Raymond D’Sa, a special guest on the occasion expressed his condolences to Rosary’s family, and revealed his appreciation towards KKK for organizin

:::A-L-A-R-M-S of Recession::: Recession has hit everybody – in a big way or small, only the measure differs. The job market is badly hit. There are retrenchments, salary cuts, freeze on new recruitments and much more. In this ‘state’, employers have become demigods. They are retaining only those employees who are in the ‘core’ and the company can’t do without them. While those on the periphery are mercilessly shown the door… In such a demanding situation, you need to first keep your job. But no matter how hard you grind and slog, there are fears! Fears of uncertainties, fears of losing your job... 'Alarms of Recession' – is inspired by my own experiences in Kuwait. :::Click: http://gaspersworld.blogspot.com/ to read the story:::

[Goanet] 30 YEARS OF THRILLING JOURNEY - A true-blue story by Agnello A.S Fernandes
:::30 YEARS OF THRILLING JOURNEY::: A true-blue story by: Agnello A. S. Fernandes, Kuwait (Navelim) :::On the occasion of Pearl Wedding Anniversary-4th September 2010::: Closing the apartment door lightly I kept the luggage down and slumped into The sofa. The beads of sweat were beginning to run down my neck in small rivulets. Kuwait’s summer heat was beginning to take its toil. The calendar on the Wall displayed April of year 1977. I had just returned back to Kuwait after A long and tiring vacation in Goa -- my first vacation. The Air India Flight was delayed and my friend who was supposed to pick me up from the Airport got the arrival time confused. I was about to give my sisters some flashbacks of my holidays in Goa when Suddenly the door bell rang. Who could it be? I looked through the viewfinder of our door, irritatingly. Rocky uncle our neighbor of next door stood there as usual with his Immaculate white banyan, partly unshaven, white beard and stripped pajamas. “Yes Uncle?” I said opening the door. “How are you son?” he said and without giving me a chance to respond Continued. “I understand you just arrived by Air India flight” “Yes.” I replied making an effort to cut his conversation short. “Everyone Takes a flight, no one comes walking,” so I thought in my mind. “Is anything wrong uncle” I enquired in a bid to seem helping. “I was expecting my two daughters coming to Kuwait for the first time – on The same flight. Its more than three hours now since arrival time and there Is no news about them. Have you by any chance seen them inside the airport?” I could see anxiety written all over his face. But this was getting on my nerves. I had never met his daughters nor seen Their photographs and how in this world did he expect me to recognize them Among the crowd at the airport? “No uncle.. I was bit in a hurry to get out so didn’t have time to look Around and perhaps more than one flight landed same time and that must be Taking time at the immigration” I said in a bid to comfort him. “Oh that could be.. Anyway thank you” he said and letting out a sigh Walked into his apartment which was next to ours. If this was someone else I would have made a nasty effort to ask him if his Daughters were celebrities or beauty queens that I would recognize them Without even having met before. But Rocky Uncle was different. He was one of Those pleasant neighbors that everyone wished for -- silent, un-meddling and Not concerned what was happening within the next wall of his apartment. He Always believed in the saying ‘good fences make good neighbors’. There were no mobile phones then and I could well understand a father’s Dilemma in this situation but there was little I could do to help him. I didn’t bother to enquire if he had sent someone to fetch them. It was highly Likely they were lost somewhere since they were new. I closed the door behind him and headed for a hot shower. Later, after a Light meal I switched on the TV for updates of local news that I’d missed For the past month. This was the only way those days as mobiles and Internet Was unheard of those days. There was nothing major in the news that drew my Attention and switching off the lights I headed for my bedroom for a well Desired sleep. I had almost forgotten the incident when suddenly it began coming as a Flashback. Two young Goan females on the same aircraft, huh? I began to Curse myself for not being more extrovert and looking around. Were they Beautiful and sexy? Would life be more exciting to have two young females Next door? These and so many other questions kept creeping in my mind but Before I could realize I dozed away in sleep only to wake up next morning. “Utt.. Kitlo nidtai?? Goemchi kanser Kuwait kadttai kitem?” My sister Standing next to my bed tried to awaken me. “Chol thond dhu, dukonar vos ani Kabouz ani il’lem dudh gheun eio”. I looked at the wall clock and was surprised to note that I’d slept beyond The required hours. I had a quick wash and pulling up my normal clothes Headed to our nearest grocery store below our building. As I reached on the First landing of our staircase I saw Rocky uncle climbing up in the opposite Direction. Accompanying him was a young female briskly walking behind him. “Good Morning son” he said. “Good Morning uncle” I responded. “Meet my eldest daughter Neeta,” he introduced the young female like any Proud father would. “Remember I told you yesterday they were on the same Flight as you were? Immigration took them a while to stamp the visas but Both of them reached home safely.” This was the first time I met her, I was startled by her beauty--though beauty isn't precisely the right word in that it connotes certain culturally accepted aspects of form. In the eyes of our culture, she was probably more cute than beautiful. But what I felt was sheer beauty. Something emanating from deep within her to

[Goanet] Churchill Bros lose in Kuwait, win hearts of Goans
AFC CUP KNOCK-OUT ROUND Churchill Bros lose in Kuwait, win hearts of Goans :::Gasper Crasto for www.goa-world.com/::: "Referees decision on points of fact connected with the play shall be final! says Law 5 of the Soccer Rules. The rule proved a matrix of judgment at Qadsiya Stadium on 12th May 2010. Churchill Brothers played their hearts out, but could not get the equalizer, falling 2-1 to Qadsiya in the AFC Cup knockout round played at Qadsiya stadium, Kuwait. The Kuwaitis displayed their passing demonstration with some trademark ball control and took the lead from a cross and increased it with a classic header off a set piece from the right wing. Qadsiya led 2-0 at half time with goals scored through headers by Ahmed in 33rd minute and Hamed in the 42nd. Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Arindam (under astute guidance of goalkeeping coach Teotonio, former Bombay Central Bank goalkeeper from Navelim) was a hero in the game saving the team from sure goals atleast on five occasions while Kalu and Felix proved why they are the most sought after players in the Indian arena. The Nigerians ran tirelessly throughout and matched the Kuwaitis from muscle to shin. Nascimento too was super while little substitute Jason created ripples in the last quarter of play. After cutting the deficit to one off a 'splendid' goal by captain Odafa, the Goans pressed hard to equalize in the last quarter but Qadsiya defended like Inter Milan against Barcelona – with almost their entire team. Churchill really played well. The collective effort was pretty solid. It was nice to see them push especially towards the end. Infact the whole match, they had the ability to move the ball forward, get players running off it, creating some opportunities. But, if there is one thing that Goans love as much as football, it's talking about it afterwards. Much post-match discussion among friends is about the referee's decisions. It always makes for lively debates. After falling behind 2-0 in the 40th minute, Churchill Brothers had scored a hard earned goal just before the breather off a header by Odafa. The assistant referee pointed for the goal, with the whole Goan army of supporters including Churchill Brothers players celebrating. But only the referee had seen 'foul' which the majority of spectators (mostly Goans, perhaps far more than the Kuwaitis) did not. Was the referee favoring the home team? "Herald says: the referee surprisingly ruled it as off side, and denied the goal." First, it can never be a off-side as interpreted by media and television. It was a foul. Odafa allegedly pushed the defender before heading. How could it happen? How can the referee give a foul. Well, referees are aware that their decisions are scrutinized in post match video reviews and evaluations by the Referees panel and Technical committee. Any inevitable blunder or a conspiracy on their part would mean that their last match would be their 'final' match of their life at this level. The decision however sure raised a question and the debate about the need for video replays, like in cricket, will not go away. The governing bodies wish it would, but with every incorrect call, the clamor grows stronger. Video replays can currently be used only to issue charges against players and referees but only once a match has finished. It is a debate that divides opinion, but football worldwide is against its use during games. How nice it would be if it had been used at the Churchill Brothers – Qadsiya match. Everyone would be at peace, the poor referee would not be crucified. For years the game has been built around respect for the referee and a general understanding that his decision is final. But if the referee makes a mistake often in a match, there is a significant chance that respect among the players for the referee would decrease, leading to other problems such as dissent towards the official which is understood of Odafa receiving a yellow during the interval break. However, the debate will continue to rage. The beauty of the sport is that even if a video replay is showed (and the screens were available in Kuwait), people will still disagree. For lovers of football who thronged Qadsiya to support the Goan team, a victory for Churchill Brothers in Kuwait would mean bigger than Churchill going to win the AFC Cup. Not because it was Churchill Brothers. Not because it was a Indian team. Because it was a Goan team. Every Goan in the crowd wished to see Goa win. A victory for Goa is a victory for India ofcourse. Whatever may be the post-match outbursts by Shri Churchill Alemao against the Bahraini referees, whatever Jovito Lopes had to write in Herald about biased refereeing', it will hold no water with the powerful A.F.C. And for sure it can't reach even the lowest rung of FIFA (The guys are too busy with the World Cup right now). We must all agree sportingly that the best team won, and be happy for a great footballing display
[Goanet] Churchill Brothers challenge Qadsiya club in Kuwait today
AFC CUP KNOCK-OUT ROUND Churchill Brothers to challenge Qadsiya today Gasper Crasto for www.goa-world.com/ Kuwait: Churchill Brothers face Kuwait League Champions Qadsiya at Qadsiya stadium later today in the AFC Cup knockout round of 16.Churchill Alemao remains optimistic of his team’s chances ahead of the tie, to become the first Indian club to win in Kuwait. Mohun Bagan, Dempo, East Bengal, and Churchill have all lost (heavily) to Kuwaiti clubs on previous attempts. In the current season, Churchill Brothers relinquished their domestic title to fellow Goan side, Dempo SC. Things don’t look very rosy for Churchill Brothers as they are playing away from home in Kuwait, which brings back nightmare of the recent 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Kuwait SC. For sure, Qadsiya are a better side and carry a good reputation in Asian football but its football and on any given day, you just never know. Other than the home advantage, the present weather, hot and humid, looks favorable for 'Goan football'. Churchill Bros will miss star left back Robert Lalthampuana due to injury, the defender hasn’t travelled with the squad. But the 'home-town' Goans working in Kuwait will get to see I-League's top scorer and highest paid player Odafa in action. Odafa had missed the 7-1 drubbing from Kuwait SC due to yellow cards. Ever with the team, and watching from the VIP stand, will be Churchill Brothers patron and Goa's PWD Minister Shri Churchill Alemao. Given the reputation of Qadsiya, Churchill's Brazilian coach Carlos is likely to opt for a defensive strategy with five defenders, four medios and a lone Odafa upfront. Qadsiya are a strong team, have beaten East Bengal 4-1 a few weeks ago. Previously they have even made it to the AFC Champions League semi-final and have even defeated Kuwait Sporting recently to stamp their authority on no uncertain terms. The match will start at sharp 6.45pm. Well, Churchill will have to defend as a unit, not concede any goal and look for the opportunity to score, unlike their last game against Kuwait Sporting where they all tried to be Ronaldos and Messis. Other matches on day one will be Kuwait Goan Association taking on United Friends Club in the second match while Rising Stars will play United Goans in the last match. NYC President Agnello A. S. Fernandes speaking on the occasion said, "NYC has over the years, whenever it has embarked on a project, always tried to create awareness with a theme. For our 21st edition NYC Rolling Trophy, in coordination with our sponsors, we have decided on the ‘Go Green' subject." Mr. Charles D'Sa picking up a team at the Draw. Later in a statement Mr. Agnello said, "Our Sponsors have stressed that NYC should try to create an awareness on climate change in their own possible way. NYC have reiterated its commitment to feature in brief, simple valuable hints that should enable us to cultivate habits this change. For statistics show that some of the greatest threats to future resources come from things we throw away every day. Batteries and electronics often contain dangerous chemicals that could pollute the earth. These items should be disposed in a proper manner - not by throwing them out the window. These can contaminate everything from the soil in which our food grows, to the water that we drink." The President further added, "Many of these chemicals cannot be removed from the drinking water supply, nor from the crops that are harvested from contaminated fields. The risk of these elements to human health is tremendous. Throwing away items that could be recycled diminishes energy, water and natural resources that could be saved by recycling." "In our own way, within our homes, we can do many things to help the climate change so that our generations can have a cleaner future. Don't leave a planet for your children that will have no climate. If we don't start to change our habits now then the culture, wealth and treasures we will leave behind for our generations will be of no use to them. THINK ABOUT IT!" concluded the President. [Goanet] Interview with Goan Star - Katty de Navelim
An interview with Goan Star - Katty de Navelim :::By Gasper Crasto, Kuwait::: Kuwait, Sept 2009: Mario Carneiro better known as Katty de Navelim is a Goan singer regularly seen on stage in Kuwait. Ex-President of popular tiatrists' fraternity - Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS), Katty has established himself amongst a horde of star performers as a singer and composer of immense calibre, wisdom and philosophy. Born and brought up in Navelim - Goa, Katty attended his primary education at Rosary High School, Navelim and later studied at St. Britto's High School, Mapusa. After his Diploma in Technical Education (Govt. of India) at Margao, he obtained his Public Works Department (PWD) license and took up a job. Presently in Kuwait, Katty works for the well known Arabi Holding Group as a Senior Irrigation and Mechanical Supervisor. >From the time he set foot in Kuwait, Katty has always involved himself in >social, cultural and sports activities for which he is quite popular among the >Indian community. He has held posts of President (twice), Sports Secretary as >well as General Secretary on various occasions with his hometown expatriate >club Navelim Youth Centre, Kuwait. He has also held positions in the Managing >Committee of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) as Sports Secretary for >three years and as Registrar for two years. In an exclusive tête-à-tête with Gasper Crasto on the eve of yet another performance, Katty revealed some interesting facts about his life as a Konkani stage artiste and singer. How long have you been involved in singing? Katty: I started singing as a child while I was just in primary school. My talents were duly recognized when I participated in an All Goa Singing Competition held by the Cavellosim Parish Youth. I won 'first' prizes there in three different categories at the competition. First prize for my solo 'Xikop', first prize for a duo with Danny Boy (a song on Mother Vailankanni), and first prize for a trio with Danny Boy and Natty. This encouragement took me to sing at Kala Academy programs and even at All India Radio (AIR - Panaji) at a very young age. What was your first performance in a drama? Katty: My first performance was in a tiatr called 'Josephinacho Fuddar' staged at Aquem Baixo, Navelim by the Holy Cross club. I was around 8 years then. Soon after, I acted as a child artiste in 'Moladik Bentin', a drama by Danny Boy (Navelim) staged at All Goa Kala Academy Tiatr Festivals and I won the Best Child Artiste Award for my performance. Later, when the same drama was staged at Navelim, I was felicitated by the villagers at the hands of Shri M. Boyer - the undisputed icon of Goan stage. Tell us more about your early days? Katty: As a teenager, I sang in various dramas all over Salcette and few villages of Bardez. The songs included decent as well as comedy 'clowns'. My songs in Patrick Perry's dramas 'Ximiterichea Darant', 'Kazarache Ratri', etc, were very popular with the audience. I also sang in a drama directed by legendary Chinchinim actor Jepsis Hitler. Later I sang duos with Patrick Perry, our most famous being a song on 'Vailankanni Saibinn' and 'Chog-M'. I have also penned and directed my only Konkani tiatr titled 'Tuka Favo Naslem' which was performed at church feasts way back in 1977 at Assagao, Bardez and Tilamol, Quepem taluka. In sports, I participated in All-Goa under-15 Road Race at Panjim. I was also a formidable sprinter in relay and 100 meters races for inter-schools in Bardez. However, my favorite game during my younger days was table tennis. Who are the other directors that you have acted under? Katty: I have been in troupes of C.D'Silva, Patrick Dourado, etc, in professional dramas all over Goa. My performance in the lead role in Patrick Dourado's famous non-stop drama 'Bhavacho Cheddo' was quite commendable. It was also my debut in acting along with another Goan star actor Mario Menezes. What is the significance of your stage name? Katty: When I acted as a child I was called Bab Katty (Katty being my pet name). It was in Kuwait that I changed my name to Katty de Navelim to identify myself to my village and the place of my birth in Goa. When did you land up in Kuwait and which was your first performance? Katty: I landed in Kuwait in 1982. I have featured regularly on stage since 2001 - be it a Konkani drama or a musical show or Goa Day celebrations. Why was there such an enormous gap from the time you landed in Kuwait to your first performance? Katty: Yes, it took me almost 19 years in Kuwait to get back into my most favorite hobby i.e. singing on stage. When I quit dramas in Goa to go abroad, it was a time I was growing mature. The politics and spite that I saw among the artistes was not for me. I'd decided then that I would never get caught up again in such environment. Here in Kuwait, I was involved with our club Navelim Youth Centre in organizing dra
