The monthly internet newsletter of Bahrain Goans ‘Xit-Koddi’ has created an awareness of this important day in the history of konkani among the Goans in Bahrain. The day is observed to mark the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of Indian Costitution, thereby recognising Konkani as one of the official languages of India. A workshop entitled ‘Bahrainche Goenkar ani Konkani’ is planned on August 20 to mark this day in Bahrain. The workshop will deliberate on various opportunites available to the Goans based here to promote konkani, Goan culture and traditions. The workshop will also feature recitation of konkani poems by Maria Pereira, who is due to release her second book of konkani poems entitled ‘Goenchi Girestkai - 2 ’. The workshop is promoted by ‘Xit-Koddi’ edited by G.R.Crasto and supported by the Young Goans Club, Bahrain. The Young Goans Club, one of the oldest in Bahrain has a history of celebrating everything Goan here, from Carnival to Christmas, however off late the activities of the club are on the decline. The Annual Day of the Club coinciding with the feast of St. Francis Xavier is celebrated every year on December 3, with releigious as well as social activities. Respect for creeds, regions and dialects are what we are aiming through JKS. We have variety and now we seek unity in this diversity. JKS is promoted by Mandd Siobhan with the principle object of representing Konkani people of all regions, dialects, castes and creeds and to represent Konkani issues pertaining to them at the global level. Eric says the need to have a Konkani organization of world stature is felt all the more because he says we do not have any organization at the international level to represent the cause of Konkani. “Konkani Diaspora is spread all over the globe including in countries like New Zealand, Slovakia, Ireland, Iceland and in every nook and corner of this globe. During the 25 day World Konkani Cultural Convention we organized last year we have come in contact with myriad Konkani organizations and bodies and realized the need and importance of forming an organization having a global reach. This is now getting fructified in the form of JKS. JKS aims to provide global leadership to Konkani people and issues”, he explained. “It is a momentous occasion, a step forward in the right direction because we don’t have a Konkani organization of global stature and people around the world say this is a great job and we need to come together for promoting Konkani. JKS is going to fill this vacuum and forge unity among diverse Konkani speaking people ’, Eric stated The entry to KJS is open to all Konkani cultural, social and literary bodies/organizations/ institutions/associations, big or small. It do not entail joining or amalgamation to form one organization. These institutions would retain their identity and functions independently despite joining JKS. The draft constitution has been formed in consultation with a think-tank involving 16 people and this has been circulated to all organizations all over the world. The think-tank is going to meet on 19th June, 2011 to prepare a final draft on the basis of the feedback received from these organizations or associations. Eric says that the draft constitution has received an overwhelming response from Konkani organizations from various parts of the globe. Interested organizations or associations can join JKS as probable members, or by sending their representatives for the First Global General Assembly and also to join in the celebrations of “World Konkani Day” on August 20, 2011. The first Global General Assembly of JKS is scheduled to be held on August 20, 2011 at Kalangann in order to pass and adopt the constitution, to finalize the plan of action for the ensuing term and also to elect office bearers to lead the Jagatik Konkani Sanghatan with the dynamism and vitality required to run an institution of global stature. Once JKS is established, JKS would become an independent body and Mandd Sobhann would continue its association as a member of JKS, Eric Ozario said. . At first , there were some concern that such a competition could bring out the worst in us due to the traditional intense rivalry between the north and the suth of Goa. But all went well as our sports-persons lived up to the theme of this event , namely "GOENKARARANCHEO DHIRIO " which means Goan Unity, This was exactly i had predicted having lived five of my best years in Goa and never having heard of bitter rivalary between the two regions. In this connection , my congratulations and thanks go to the team captains, Jeff Homes and Janice White for Bardez and Diana & Diamond Carvalho for Salcette. Friends of Goa ! The idea of WORLD GOA DAY would have died a natural death had it not been for the Internet collaboration of many Goan Organizations /Associations and individuals. The Goan Associations fell in line with a call made in the year 2000, and year by year their number has grown abundantly. I thank them all for all their support they have extended to make this Global Goan event such a great success. Goanworld: http://worldgoan.blogspot.com/ 0 The WGD Toronto report : World Goa Day Picnic/International Fundraiser 2009 http://worldgoaday2009.blogspot.com/2009/07/world-goa-day-toronto.html The Goan Overseas Association Toronto celebrated World Goa Day on theWaterfront at Coronation Park in Oakville on August 15th,2009. We continued with a “pot luck” picnic format and introduced our International Charitable component at this event. The newly created “Charitable Events” portfolio has been set up with certain criteria and goals. The picnic was the first event for this portfolio. This being a WORLD celebration, funds raised at this event will be used for an ‘International’ cause pre-approved by the Executive Committee. Some of you may have heard of the struggles Kennedy D’Souza of Kenya faced. Kennedy, 30 years of age, had to undergo expensive treatment in Mumbai to shrink a tumor in his head. Sadly, Kennedy lost his battle and leaves behind a wife and infant child. Kennedy’s widow required assistance with expensive hospital bills as well as funeral expenses. The committee under the Charitable Events portfolio hosted the WGD/Charity picnic with a dual purpose in mind - celebrating World Goa Day with Goans around the globe and attempting to assist the D’Souza family. While we would have liked to have seen a larger number of members/guest attend the WGD picnic; we realize there were a few other events that prevented some from attending. We express our appreciation to those who attended and are grateful to those who could not attend but supported by sending donations towards our cause. Next year's event will be celebrated closer to the actual WGD date of August 20th. The day began early, with DJ Fatz playing tunes from the arrival time of volunteers who came out to assist us with our set up to the end of the picnic where he entertained out guests (non-stop) for the entire day! Our sincere appreciation to DJ Fatz for assisting us with our fundraiser by donating his services to the G.O.A. As usual Fatz, you were fabulous! There were fun filled activities for all the children - including a splash pad on site. Linda D’Sa managed the children’s activities very capably! Activities included tug of war, balloon toss, treasure hunt and a very interesting ‘eat the mini donut’ game for the teens! Soccer games were coordinated for the youth and any adult that had the spirit of a youth! Thank you to Jude Furtado for coordinating this for us. There were card games for those that wanted to relax by the water and play a hand or two coordinated by Pauline Coutinho and our thanks to her. There was plenty of mixing and mingling including crowd-pleasing Tombola games….not forgetting the every popular tea and desserts. Thanks to HemaPereira who ensured the tea was ready (on time) for our Tombola games! Our gratitude goes out to Joana Nunes for looking after all aspects of our Pot Luck luncheon. You did an amazing job Joana! Special thanks go out to Mrs. Goes for donating the meat for the Sausage on a Bun and thanks to Joana/Abel Nunes for the donation of the buns and the coffee! We cannot forget to show our appreciation to Audrey DaCosta who ensured the sausage meat was heated (just right) and for putting together the buns for our guests. All funds raised from the sale of this went towards our charity. We also had a charitable raffle on the day. Our gratitude to Yvonne Rodrigues who coordinated the raffle You did an amazing job! The youth put together a Charity Bake Sale on site raising $105.00! Rosie Barreto, thanks for coming up with the idea and ensuring things ran smoothly. Finally, hats off to the organizing committee for their dedication to the event. You are an amazing team! WGD must serve to remind us that we have one native identity: the Konkani language. The battle to keep Konkani in the Indian Constitution has been long and arduous. A number of Goans have worked hard to achieve this for Goans. That is why we need to find ways to promote Konkani, our Mother-tongue within our family environment and to engage the wider Goan community in this vital endeavour so that we can all take pride in our Goan entity. 20th of August is the official day for WORLD GOA DAY CELEBRATIONS, but for practical reasons, the event is often held at a date close to this and most suitable for this unique celebration. The Brazilian Jazz band Acuri is set to perform live at Gonsalves Mansion, the Home of Jazz in India, at Campal. As said earlier, the concert will be held on August 15th in aid of Brasil Futebol Academia (BFA), Goa. As is usual with us, all of us at Heritage Jazz are delighted that we can do our bit for the community, and we can do it since the Academia trains our local Goan boys to become great footballers. On World Goa Day last year , I stressed the impact that overseas Goans can have on Goa today. With Indian laws changing and persons of Indian origin being given more rights, it is important that all people of Goan origin and residence realise that events in Goa are a part of their history, culture and human rights. Towards this end, and considering the million Goans in the diaspora, I completely support the interests of Goans worldwide.
