Life’s a beach! Shack owners back in business

Colva: Last week, the rising tidal waves due to Cyclone Ockhi caused
destruction to beach shacks across the state, leaving shack owners distraught
as they stared at losses running into lakhs of rupees. But, the owners have not
sat brooding, they have worked three continuous days and nights to restart
business along the coast.

Cavelossim beach suffered the most damage along the Salcete coastline caused by
the tidal movement of the sea. Rosario's shack was reduced to a skeleton in
addition to rendering him out of business since last Saturday. But, on December
8, he was back into business. Narrating his tale of woes to TOI, he said that
"the wooden planks on the flooring were washed away" and he had to spend Rs
60,000 to get his shack up and running again.
Mario Cardozo was another shack owner in Cavelossim who faced similar losses.
His shack has sand as the foundation, over which wooden planks are placed which
is then covered with kadappa slabs to create a firm flooring. The tidal waves
had eroded his stacked sand and he had to do it all over again at a cost of Rs
40,000.

Both shack owners said that they can't afford to wait for the government relief
as it would be a paltry sum and secondly, it would be years before they
received the amount. "So, we had to dig into our savings and start operations,"
Cardozo said.

GL responds to this news-article in the Goa newspaper
Congratulations Rosario and Mario and the other beach shacks owners and other
Goans who rolled up their sleeves after the tidal waves and got to solve the
problems rather than expecting or blaming the government, writing on Goanet or
a feature article in TOI or other print or e- newspaper.  That is the spirit of
entrepreneurship that makes me proud of you.  You-guys and your spouses,
relatives and helpers did what is done in the rest of the world after a natural
disaster.
The beach-shack owners should be a role model for many Goans.  They need a
state award!
No time to waste blaming mother-nature, government, city or municipal officials
etc.  Life has to move on. The secret of successful evolution is adaptation and
inherent ingenuity to overcome adversity.  All those Goans on Goanet  with
college degree(s) please note. :=))
Regards, GL
