3,84,753 Prisoners Lodged in Jails
As per latest statistics published by the National Crime Records Bureau
(NCRB), the details of number of prisons, authorised capacity and prison
population at the end of 2008 is given as under:

Total prison population (undertrial & convicts)
384753
Extent of overcrowding
86,976 (29.2 %)
As per the latest statistics published by NCRB, at the end of 2008, the
sanctioned strength of prison staff was 68920 and actual strength 49250.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Home, Shri Ajay
Maken in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
