“Probably a good thing. They need to clear out the corruption and weaken the

They still are a player in one of the world’s most populous markets.

Tata today paid Air Asia $38 million for a eighty percent stake in their India
business, as they prepare to acquire Air India. People believe it will fold
into the the domestic business of Air India. The international division will
emerge as a lean operation with many curtailed flights. Foreign outposts will
be shut or reduced with staff cutbacks, including Singh of the IAS  who runs
the JFK outpost in NY. He is known to spend the day readingIndia newspapers and
foraging aircraft for edibles. India's taxpayers will be rid of a burden that
should have been demolished decades ago.

2010-08-03 Thread Alfred de Tavares

Thanks Pandu...the crash of the Kachejunga still brings forth the most
poignant memories...

Carmo de Rebelo was a cherished friend and remains ever so: We
were the best of chums from our Wadia college days (Poona) & subsequently
in Maegao.

Illustriously inteligent...handsome...ever so gentle...kind & generous to a
noble
fault.

Innumerable were the pranksbinges...carousels that we merrily indulged in
with an abandon that some frowned upon while others envied. We cared for
neither.

While Carmo was a demonstrator in either physis or chemistry, at Chowgule
college,
he was awaerded a sholarship to either Haward or Yale...don't recall which.

The send off was a highly copiious affair at the late(?) Viniola lasting
cock-crowing late
& the next day we waved him off enroute Boston where he was bound to reap rich
laurels.

Alás, the next morning, still reeling from a colossal hangover, The Navhind
Times
informed us of the tragedy on Mont Blank with a full list of victimsno
survivors.

It beame my most painful plight to inform his sweet heart, don't remember if it
were Gracinda or Matildinha (Barreto Cruz) of the gruesome calamity.

It was not just her that groaned inconsolably: we all did,

Besides Carmo there were 12 other Goans aboard the ill-fated craft: The captain
de Sousa,
my mother's neigbour in Uassaim; A very senior & experienced Air India officer
who
had flown Pope Paul Vl, back to Rome, after the Euharistic Congress in Bombay,
1964
& been condecorated for the service.

The other unfortunate 11 Goans were musiians enroute to join a cruise(?) liner
in the
Czarribean...I believe.

I don't know if Carmo's parents are still with us or have joined him up there.
But if
any memento of his is among Ms Cowan's finds I am certain his nearest & dearest
ones
will be overjoyed and infinitely grateful to Ms Cowan.

HARDLY A FOOTNOTE: Allthough Government of India has never admitted it the,
sustained
theory held in knowledgeable circles is that the cause for exploding the
Kachejunga was,
indubitable the presence on board of Dr Homi Babha, the prodigious Indian
scientist considered
the "father" of Indian atomic energy & the eventual A-"gadget".

A SENTIMENTAL FOOTNETE: Years later, in mid-seventies, when I was an AI

obligingly granted my request and, inviting me into the cockpit, circled the

[Goanet] Air India Alert

2010-01-22 Thread Mauricio Pereira

The government has put all Air India planes operating in the country's
neighbourhood on high security alert and directed the airlines to deploy sky
marshals following intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based LeT and other terror
groups were planning to hijack a flight.

A directive has been issued to all Indian missions abroad to sensitise the
staff of the airlines, official sources said.

According to intelligence inputs, terrorist groups having allegiance with
Al-Qaida, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jamat-ul-Dawa were planning to hijack an Air
India plane especially operating in or from SAARC countries -- Nepal,
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India as
well.

Hijacking could be attempted by the terrorists from airports located at Yangon,
Dhaka and Colombo. Security of planes operating to Bhutan has also been beefed
up, the sources said.

Following this input, the Civil Aviation Ministry has directed all the airlines
especially Air India to take extra steps besides asking Bureau of Civil
Aviation Security to deploy sky marshals on aircraft operating on such routes,
the sources said.

On its part, the External Affairs Ministry has asked Indian missions,
particularly in SAARC countries, to brief the staff of the Air India and other
Indian carriers about the threat.

Taking a serious view of the threat, the Home Ministry yesterday issued
directions to upgrade security.

The intelligence input has been shared with India by Western spy agencies,
which had received an intercept.

Special Secretary (Internal Security) U K Bansal said, "We have intelligence
inputs that there could be a hijack attempt of Indian planes. So we have
alerted the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security
(BCAS) and tightened security in all airports in the country."

The BCAS has issued an advisory to all airlines to conduct a mandatory
secondary ladder point check on all aircraft flying in the region.

The cockpit of the Airbus A320 was reportedly left unmanned during the scuffle

United Arab Emirates to Delhi, in Pakistan, which it was flying over. According
to Indian media reports, crew members threw punches and hurled abuse at each

Air India Express cancels its Goa flights

Dubai (PTI): Air India Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Indian Airlines
catering mainly to middle east countries, has cancelled its operations from UAE
to Goa, a week after opening its seat bookings for the Indian state. The
budget airline was scheduled to operate its flights to Goa from June 18 thrice
a week, to cater to the nearly 500,000 Goans who live in the UAE. The
airline, however said the people who had booked their tickets will either get a
complete refund or will be provided alternative arrangements, a gulf daily
reported. "Those who had purchased their tickets from us are not that large
in numbers. We are right now working out options so that they do not waste even
a single day and are able to travel to Goa," Jayshree Ramchandran, marketing
Manager of AIE, was quoted as saying by the Gulf news. Currently Indian
airlines operate direct flights to Goa twice a week. Indian, which used to
operate thrice a week direct flights to the state, had also
stopped its operations as of March 30 due to low seat bookings. One of the
reasons being cited for the airline's shelving of its operations is load
sustainability after the peak season comes to an end, the daily said. "The
peak season is from June to December but after that the question is whether or
not our flights will operate in its full capacity. Indian already has two
flights going to Goa per week and if we were to operate three flights the total
number of flights to the state will be five," said Ramchandran.

and was apt in keeping the large enthusiastic crowd lively with her witty
questions on the Airline.

Air India
Express expands Gulf operations

18 Oct, 2007, 1105 hrs IST, PTI

DUBAI: Air India Express, the
budget airline operated by national carrier Air India,
is expanding its operations in Gulf by connecting more Indian destinations with
the Middle East.

Close on the heels of introducing a direct flight from Dubai to Nagpur on
September 24, Air India Express is adding two more Indian destinations to its
schedule, Jaipur and Lucknow, said Freddie Vaz, regional Director of Air India.

The airline may soon add Goa by the year-end
or next year, he added. "These destinations will be the low-cost carrier's
11th and 12th with effect from the winter schedule commencing on October
28," he said in a statement.

Three non-stop flights a week will be operated on each route. All the flights
will originate and terminate at New
  Delhi.

With these new routes, Air India Express will be operating 60 flights a week
from Dubai and
Sharjah to 12 Indian destinations. This week, Air India Express inducted a
brand new Boeing 737-800 into its fleet. The induction takes the number of new
B737-800 aircraft in Air India Express' fleet to 10.

Besides, it has seven leased aircraft of the same make. Air India Express,
whose flights have an all-economy class configuration, operates services from
several Indian cities to Dubai, Abu
 Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, Muscat,
Salalah in UAE and Oman, Bahrain and Doha,
as well as to Singapore and Colombo.

It also proposes to introduce direct flights from Kolkata to Dhaka, Bangkok and
Kuala
Lumpur. Its fares are about 25 per cent lower than the
legacy airlines.

CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD

Too costly to delay Air India flight for search, witness testifies

A former security guard said Wednesday he believes Air India Flight 182 left
Montreal without a full baggage search because airline officials decided it
would be too costly to keep the plane on the ground.

Daniel Lalonde, who worked for the private firm Burns Security at Mirabel
airport the night the doomed flight left Canada, said he remembers a
conversation involving an Air India official named John and an official from
either Air Canada or Transport Canada.

Lalonde, who was 18 years old at the time of the June 1985 disaster, said
the conversation took place after three suspicious bags destined for the
flight had been identified, which should have triggered a search of all
bags.

While Lalonde said he doesn't remember the exact wording of the
conversation, he said he recalls what it was about.

"Essentially, the conversation had to do with time and money and how much it
cost for a flight to be kept on the ground," said Lalonde, who is now an
Ontario Provincial Police sergeant.

"I think . the money or cost of keeping the plane on the tarmac was very
high and pretty much . they decided to send the plane because of that
factor."

Flight 182 stopped in Montreal after leaving Toronto, headed for London's
Heathrow Airport and then India. The explosives - allegedly planted by Sikh
extremists in luggage that was loaded in Vancouver - exploded off the west
coast of Ireland and killed 329 people on board, mostly Canadians.

Norm Boxall, a lawyer for the families of the Air India victims, said it's
the first time he's heard hard evidence that cost was a factor in letting
the plane leave Montreal.

"Human lives are nothing compared to the money," said Usha Sharma, relative
of an Air India victim.

Air India official checks bags

Lalonde said when he arrived at Mirabel in the late afternoon or early
evening of June 22, there were more RCMP or police than usual. He said his
Burns co-workers, used by Air India to screen its baggage, believed there
was some kind of higher alert, but hadn't received any specific warnings.

Mark Freiman, the lead lawyer for the commission, later introduced an RCMP
document noting that at Air India's request, the security level had been
increased to Level 4 that evening. The second-highest airline security
level, it requires baggage searches and the use of explosives-sniffing dogs.

Lalonde said he was helping to process checked luggage through a large X-ray
machine when the three suspicious bags were noted. They appeared to show
wires or circuitry, he said.

That's when a tall, large man wearing a fez hat, who identified himself as
John from Air India, arrived to examine the bags, said Lalonde. He said the
bags should not be loaded on the flight and asked to speak with officials
from Transport Canada or Air Canada, said Lalonde.

"My understanding is he was making decisions on what was going on with the
plane," he said.

Freiman later read a CSIS report, which included a statement from Air India
security head John D'Souza, who has since died. In the report, D'Souza, who
was on the flight from Toronto to Montreal, wrote that he instructed a "Mr.
Daniel" to remove the suspicious suitcases.

In it, D'Souza made no reference to cost issues, but did acknowledge he
decided not to hold the flight or to recall it once it was in the air.

Left out of earlier statement

Lalonde said he was instructed to take the suitcases to an isolated part of
the airport for further examination and then on to an explosives facility.

His testimony on Wednesday differs from his official statement provided to
RCMP and lawyers for Burns Security within days of the disaster, in which he
said he didn't pay any attention to the conversation.

Lalonde said he deliberately decided not to put it in his 1985 statement,
suggesting he was intimidated by the presence of the two lawyers and two
RCMP officers, who he said grew impatient during the interview.

He said he decided to come forward after hearing recent public testimony,
including revelations from a former Quebec police dog handler who said he
didn't get a chance to check the flight because it left before he got to the
airport.

"I was trying to be helpful and clarify, if it was pertinent," said Lalonde.

The flight had been cleared for takeoff in Montreal even though the baggage
screening system at Toronto's Pearson airport had broken down and a
bomb-sniffing dog and his handler were still on their way.
