To Goanet - The SEZ issue has not been laid to rest yet. But it appears that the current Congress regime is cooking a fresh set of scams as 'gifts' to the people of Goa. See the attached press statement of GMAS released today.
Regards, r ****** Press Release Monday, Jan 7, 2008: At a meeting held in Panjim today, Goas Movement Against SEZs (GMAS) said that a letter has been sent to all the legislators of the Goa Legislative Assembly to pass an unanimous resolution in the upcoming Assembly session to codify the will of the people to cancel the SEZ policy in Goa, and cancel all SEZs including the 3 notified ones. The letter also said that since IT Parks, IT Resorts, IT Retreats, IT Habitats, Food Parks and Townships are located in areas which were applied for as SEZs, the resolution must also contain that the same should not be established in any form whatsoever in any part of Goa. Also added was that the resolution must stop all proceedings on land acquisitions which were meant for SEZs. GMAS was informed that national & international commercial business interests have approached the Central government to create special tourist zones inland and offshore. Similarly it is learnt that special fishing zones are also being proposed within the territorial waters of Goa. GMAS would like to warn the Goa government not to entertain any such projects within the territorial boundaries of Goa. We are forewarning so as to prevent further crises arising from such anti-people, anti-environment projects. Meanwhile, GMAS awaits the copy of the letter/communication sent to the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry to cancel all SEZs including the 3 notified SEZs as promised to us during our last meeting with the Chief Minister of Goa. GMAS also awaits the copy of the White Paper on SEZs so that people of Goa can be clear of the contents of the said White Paper.
