Re: [Goanet] Bishops of Rome and Rome of the Orient
From: Antonio Menezes Whether it is Bombay, Pune or Sri Lanka, Goa is'nt very far away and yet the Bishops of Rome are reluctant to come to the Rome of the Orient. From: Roland Francis Perhaps the Bishop of Rome remembers ... wants to discourage . thinks that Goans are so solidly devout heard the garbage problem and wants to avoid the BJP . GL responds: Could it be as simple as the Bishop and Catholics of Goa have just not invited him / them? Now two can come for the price of one ... same Vatican plane.
[Goanet] Bishops of Rome and Rome of the Orient
Thanks Roland (Aug 8 ) for your '' serious '' comments. It is reaction like this that makes Goanet readership very interesting. If readers will allow me , I too have a reason why the Bishops of Rome suffer from trepidation at the very mention of the Rome of the Orient. I am sure they do not suffer from I.C. at all.but may be they feel a bit uneasy to be among Goan soldiers of Christ most of whom are of the very high dharmic caste. P.S.: I.C. btw stands for inferiority complex.
[Goanet] Bishops of Rome and Rome of the Orient!
Bishops of Rome and Rome of the Orient Message-ID: According to Catholic News Agency report, in February (2014), Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo had invited Pope Francis to visit the country and Pope Francis announced that he will visit Sri Lanka in January 2015. Since the Bishop of Rome is the Head of the State of the Vatican, an independent State (country), though smallest, within the city of Rome, I think a formal invitation is required, much in advance as the Sri Lankan Cardinal has done. Was the Pope formally invited as the Sri Lankan Cardinal has done? I guess as per diplomatic protocol any Head of State arrives first in the Capital of the host country if it is official visit? md Bishops of Rome and Rome of the Orient Message-ID: Perhaps the Bishop of Rome remembers the Padroado and still wants to honor it. Or as a Jesuit he wants to discourage the worshipping of a long dead body even if the person once happened to be from his own Society. Or perhaps he thinks that Goans are so solidly devout that his visits must be to less faithful and more faltering Catholics. Or perhaps he has heard the garbage problem and wants to avoid the BJP blaming him for it. Roland.

Send Goanet mailing list submissions to From: Antonio Menezes - Bishops of Rome and Rome of the Orient Sometime in the sixties, the patrician Bishop of Rome came to Bombay and was welcomed by the greatest soldier of Christ in India hailing from Chinchinim/ Navelim region. In the eighties, the Polish Bishop of Rome visited Pune to be received by another soldier of Christ hailing from Sangolda. And now it seems the Jesuit Pope will be visiting soon Sri Lanka. Whether it is Bombay, Pune or Sri Lanka, Goa is'nt very far away and yet the Bishops of Rome are reluctant to come to the Rome of the Orient. GL responds: Is the "Rome of the Orient" (whatever than means today) willing to be prepared to invite and receive the Pope? Or is it wishful thinking? Preparations for the Eucharistic Congress in Bombay in the sixties started several years in advance. I recollect being a volunteer and spent some time learning German to be a guide and translator for German visitors to the Congress. There were others learning French, etc. There were many, many volunteers in various aspects of the event of which the Pope's attendance was one; albeit important aspect of the event. Hosting a major event with world dignitaries is not something one can plan on Goanet. Initially, many individuals have to be prepared to roll up their sleeves and contribute 3Ts (time, talent and treasury) for a successful event. Goa should start by hosting meetings of the Bishops and Cardinals of India, and perhaps Asia; or perhaps a convocation its own former provinces, when it used to be "Rome of the Orient." Regards, GL

Perhaps the Bishop of Rome remembers the Padroado and still wants to honor it. Roland.
