Philomena Braz stepped on tiatr stage when there was a taboo for girls to act on the tiatr stage. In fact she gave a lead to other girls to act on tiatr stage due to her sheer courage of conviction. She served the tiatr stage for a long time and contributed immensely for the development of tiatr. She was not only an excellent actor but an equally good singer and writer. http://www.GOANET.org This month's Goanet operations sponsored by an Anonymous Donor Dears, The Dalgado Konkani Akademi has organised a Condolence Meeting in the memory of Ulhas Buyao [originally named Ulhas Sabnis], the Konkani singer and tiatr personality who provided the boost to the movements 1. for the Opinion Poll in 1966-67 to retain Goa's separate identity , 2. for the Konkani agitation in 1986-87 to get Konkani recognised as the Official Language of Goa and 3. for the lipi agitation in 2006-07 to get parity for Roman script with the Devanagri script in the Official language of Goa. Of his 62 years of life on Earth, 41 years were dedicated to Goa and Konkani. It seems an irony of sorts that the Government of Goa, the Department of Official Language as well as the Government -funded Goa Konkani Academy and Kala Academy, have chosen to maintain a discreet silence. It is all the more peculiar that the Government of Goa and the GSB Mhalgodde of Konkani should have chosen to ignore a person who was as proud of his Hindu Saraswat Brahmin roots as he was proud of his mother tongue, Konkani, and his state of Goa, even in his passing awayjust because he championed the cause fo Romi lipi. He could read and write in both Romi and Devanagri and has works in both the scripts, as do many of the other 'Konkani stalwarts'. Most of the so-called 'Konkani stalwarts', who butter their bread with the lonni of Goa Government and Sahitya Academy largesse because of Ulhas Buyao's contribution to the cause of Goa and Konkani, were conspicuous by their absence at his funeral and even at the condolence meets organised half-heartedly by the Konkani Songit Natak Akademi in association with KBM on 23 April and full-throated meet on 27 April by the Romi Lipi Action Front [see Press Release by Wilmix below; published in Herald on 29 April], both held in Margao. The Dalgado Konkani Akademi is organising the condolence meeting for Goem Shahir Ulhas Buyao on Monday, 30 April, 2007, at 5.00 P.M. in the Art Gallery hall of the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall. It is hoped that all the Konkani stalwarts, most of whom have been personally invited by the DKA, and at least the representatives of the Konkani organisations that have been formally invited by the DKA, will attend this function in Panaji.since they have been so far unable to organise one on their own or muster the presence of their leading lights at the condolence meet organised by them. Those of us who are proud to be Konkani speaking Goans will not let Ulhas Buyao become the GSB equivalent of the 'cristao' Dr. Jack Sequierarecognised 40 years after the historic Opinion Poll [ and one and half decade after his passing away] by the people who owe their separate identity to him...and still awaiting official recognition from the State Government that owes its very existenz to the positive result of the Opinion Poll. If former MP and Minister of State in the Union Government, Eduardo Faleiro, finds it rather difficult to acknowledge Dr. Jack Sequeira as the Father of the Opinion Poll even at the unveiling of the statue, former MLA Adv. Uday Bhembre will have no less difficulty with recognition of Ulhas Buyao. In a way, we Goans are cannibalswe devour our own kind! If MGP's former Vasco MLA Vasant Joshi could publicly acknowledge Dr. Jack Sequeira as the 'Father of Opinion Poll on 20 April, 2007 at Dona Paula, there is no reason why former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Tomazinho Cardoz, cannot publicly acknowledge the contribution of Goem Shahir Ulhas Buyao in Panaji tomorrow.
