Hi 1) Thought I will share with you my findings in this Chapter: *"Formation History of 'Mombasa Goan School' ~ Challenges and Obstacles Confronted with the Idea of a School for the Community".*
You may recall in a previous chapter on ~ *"A Very Influential Mombasa Goan Pioneer: Diogo Luis Pereira", *we had seen that *Monsignor De Courmont *of the* Holy Ghost Fathers *in Zanzibar, had propositioned *Mr George McKinnon,* the Managing Director of IBEAC in *1887,* that he could provide a *"little school"* for their Goan employees. As per our school history, *'Mombasa Goan School' *was founded in *1932*. I had questioned then: *"Why then did it take Mombasa Goans 45 long years .... to have its own school for Goans and others?" *The answer lies in this chapter. 2) A couple of days ago, I picked up a *Times of India *report in the *Goan Voice (UK)* stating: *"Suresh Amonkar's literature works to be gifted to Central Library in Goa".* Professor Suresh Amonkar, was a teacher at the Mombasa Goan School/Sacred Heart School in the period 1956/1960. He died in Goa in December 2019, aged 84. As per the newspaper article, his family: *" .... are gifting a total of 1,818 titles owned by Amonkar. ... he is well known for publishing the Konkani translation of the 17th Century Christian epic on the coming of Jesus Christ: Krista Purana. ....... Amonkar is also credited for the first translation of a Shakespeare play in Devanagri Konkani. He had translated Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in Konkani."* In the course of this project, I visited the Professor at his home in Mapusa, in February 2017. I received a warm welcome by this richly talented and inspirational scholar. He took me to his 'Hallowed Sanctuary: His Study', to show me his vast collection including the 2 volumes of the soon-to-be published: *Krista Purana.* He put in 6 hours a day - every day, in his literary pursuits, up to the end. One of the truly remarkable persons I have met. And to know, he was attached to our school. Do stay safe and keep up your spirits in these challenging times. Kind regards Marci Pereira Project: *"Archiving Memories of Mombasa Goan School"* 18 September 2020
