Thanks Alwyn. This is near the church in Colvale, which is tucked at
one end of the village. Facing Pernem taluka. Really nice for a Sunday
evening, and sharing the simple things in life with the kids :-) But I
guess once too many people start going there, it will face pressures.
Alwyn Noronha (a Goanetter who was in Vienna till not long back) ran
into us at Corjuvem (the now-bridged island outside Aldona) and we
were just joking that we need a series of write-ups on Sunday
'getaways' around Goa. FN

I hear you, Fred.
However, I don't think that the people who are living
in Goan villages are as aware of what they are about
to loose as tourists like me (who visit Goa every five
years) are.

I am with you again. Thirty years ago, my grand mom
took me on a "shortcut" over the fields from Colvale
to Tivim. We went walking to the Tivim feast in a
trench that was built as part of the Colvale
fortifications. A four hundred year old (stone brick
lined) path showed us the way. If you ask the current
Colvale residents how they go to Tivim, they reply,
"by car." Only a few are aware of the short cut and
even fewer have any inclination of using it.

There is an excellent path from the back of Moira
Church thru the fields leading to Mapusa. I once
stumbled across a group of field workers watching two
cobras fight. Before I could turn and run, an
"Afrigander" appeared on the scene and killed both
with one blast of a shotgun. I doubt I will see
anything similar to that again.

For those who are not aware of how fast the Goan
village is going to change, consider the following.
In 1984, I used the SFX exposition as my excuse to go
to Goa. I took out the usual tourist photographs of
our ancestral house, the well, the jack fruit trees,
the outdoor toilet, etc. Within six months of leaving
Goa, we were informed that the house would be broken
down so that the access road to the bridge of the new
Mumbai/Goa road could be built.

When I visit Colvale now, I can hardly recognize the
place where our house was. What used to be a sleepy
vaddo road is now a busy highway. All sorts of
commercial buildings line this new road. While the
"tar" used to be the busiest place in the village,
this area is now dead without the ferry crossing. The
cobblers, the fishermen, the fish vendors, the boats
bringing in "kubers," the boats bringing in river
sand, the teashops, the toddy sellers have all
disappeared.

Maybe those of us outside Goa can convince our village
associations to get someone to record the Goan village
life as it is today. IMHO, 20 years from now, there is
going to be a big demand on how Goa looked and felt at
the turn of this century.

Hi Mervyn, Just to clarify... it doesn't take money to get to a
village in Goa. At least, not money worth talking about. With a
digital camera (and rechargeable batteries), it doesn't even take
film!

What does help vastly, of course, is to have local guide to show you
around the village. In the past, I've made a standing offer to create
any number of pics (within the time available ... this isn't an issue
usually except very occasionally) of any region in Goa. This works
specially if someone local shows me around the pace. Otherwise, as an
'outsider', there's only that much you can get infront of your own
horizon.

So, when Jaime de Melo was down in Goa some years back (where are you
now Jaime?), we 'did' Moira one sunny evening. My long-time
Galgibaga-based friend and colleague Anthony "Tony Martins" Barreto
helped me hugely when we needed to photograph coastal Canacona one
monsoon day, 3-4 years ago.

My friend and colleague Shashikant Punaji ferried me on a two-wheeler
through the length and breath of Pernem. We even took a detour via the
Maharashtra border and ate a simple lunch there. This was when he
needed pics for a site meant to be called pernem.com The site didn't
happen; but we got some very nice photos and memories!

Maybe it's simplistic to think so, but digital photography (specially
sharable photos) can make Goans aware of the need to preserve and take
to future generations the scenic legacy that nature and their
forefathers (and mothers!) have left for them. We are only trustees
here, of course. It doesn't "belong" to us!

Anyone wanting photos for your voluntary ventures out there, just let
me know. Of course, these will be put out in a sharable Creative
Commons or GFDL license. So that Goa's charm remains in the sharable,
copylefted, public domain ... and we shouldn't be privatising this. --

Folks,
I have added my comments to Freds pictures.
For those who want clues as to where to get the best
feni is Goa, check out the comments.

Colvalecars, looks like we need to sponsor Fred to
make another visit to the village and this time with
pointers to the scenic places and the fort.
