Re: [Goanet] Diaspora Links: At IC Colony.... and Hubli
Dear Mr Noronha: Your reference to Hubli in a recent issue of goanet brought back memories of another time and another world half a century ago -- painful at that time, nostalgic 50 years hence. The cast of three three of us involved -- Tony Mascarenhas, Jimmy D'Cruz and myself. All three had graduated with Geology as our primary subject from that renowned Jesuit institution, St Xavier's College in Bombay. Frankly, there were no prospects for a geology graduate anywhere close to Bombay. Tony and Jimmy who had graduated earlier than myself. They very wisely started a small hands-on laboratary Londa which was close enough to civilisation to make life tolerable. My own good fortune took me to a place called Supa aa meaagre outpot situated on the Belgaum-Dharwar bus route, From: Frederick Noronha One of the newer settings in which Goans have based themselves is I.C. Colony at Borivali. The colony gets its name from the Immaculate Conception Church in the locality, and many Goan families which once stayed in the heart of town have moved there in recent years. Just learnt of the launch of a Goan Cultural Association at the I.C. Colony. It can be contacted at La Paloma, Opposite Corporation Bank, I C Colony, Borivali (West) Mumbai 400103. Fred, this type of a bag is mostly available in Goa, and hence Mumbaikars call it Goa Bag. There are two types of goa bags, one open n the other with the zip. Both come in handy as they are strong and can hold lot of stuff like fresh fish, meats, vegges n can be washed after use. Besides this bag, many mumbaikar also used to get the fish soap and payal slippers :)) Last year IC Parish initiated the Plastic Free drive, by distributing free cloth bags, and it was followed for quite some time. I did not know of this Goa Like atmosphere at Festival time. On of my married nieces lives there with her family for long time now. Good Going! Eddie, I've heard about the "Goa bag", but only from Bomboicars. If I'm not mistaken, it's the black, plasticy bag that is available at the Mapusa market, and probably at other places. Being in Goa myself, I've not thought of this as a "Goa bag" for obvious reasons :-) Question: do you know how and when this name originated, or when it was first used? Intrigued... Re: [Goanet] Diaspora Links: At IC Colony
Agree with Hilary, Goans were there long before, most of them shifting from other parts of Mumbai. A few years back IC Parish had 20,000+ parishioners, which included Dahisar. Now Dahisar has a seperate church. The Bazaar is the typical Goan bazaar where you find mostly Goans coming for their daily fresh fish with Goa Bag :) There is already a Manglorean Association there, but Goans have recently started. A Prince Jacob tiatr is always house full. The midnight mass for Christmas/New Year starts at 9 n ends by 11, with reading and hymns in English/Konkani/Hindi. Its a typical goan village with Ambe, Ponos, madd. Dec is more festive with communion parties and each building having their own Christmas/new year parties. Slowly the old bunglows are making way for new buildings. You're right Jack. I should have said it was one of those areas to which an even larger number of Goans have moved in recent years. Re: [Goanet] Diaspora Links: At IC Colony.... and Hubli
There were many of them before I came around 40+ years ago Now you find more Gujaratis, Jains, Punjabis, etc in IC Colony. Goans are a minority now though their numbers seem huge Shiv Kumar On 6 December 2010 18:07, Frederick Noronha wrote: > One of the newer settings in which Goans have based themselves is I.C. > Colony at Borivali. Re: [Goanet] Diaspora Links: At IC Colony..and Hubli
I liked Borivali and the the IC Colony, where lot of Goans stayed. I have been there years back dont remember when, must be in 1976-80. My Uncle stayed in Borivali, just opposite the Convent a house called VILLA FORTES. At that time I used to work Bombay offshore, on ONGC Oil Rigs. When I used to come off for 7 days off after 14 days work, I was spent one night with my uncle and Borivali is the best place and he used to take me around to meet his Goan friends in IC Colony and around IC Colony. Today 8th December and Borivali Parish is celebrating the Feast of our Lady.of Immaculate Conception. Happy Feast to all Borovlikars.
