Hi everyone,

I have been following the posts on Goanet and GX forums for several weeks and
have a
few observations to make. Here is a typical conversation very much exaggerated
to
explain the point I am trying to make.

A: I think ..

(B fumes with rage. How dare A write this? He has insulted us all)
B: How long will it take you to grow up A? Stop your ugly rants in favour of
XYZ.

A: All you bigots should stop blabbering like parrots.

B: You and your clan of D, G, J and K are the real bigots.

(C lives in the US and so tries to show his prowess on English)
C: I am flabbergasted by the sheer exuberance of your naiveness A. Pigs like
you
should rot in the gutters. You epitomize the concept of piggery.

(D puts on his swearing cap)
D: Sitting in a hole in the US C is trying to bark at us. There are trained
shooters
for dogs like him.

(C cannot take it)
C: D the modern-day neanderthal man unaware of the happenings outside his
jungle.
Who can be a worse dog than D himself?

(E changes the topic)
E: Even a donkey would not believe in a bigot like C.

The above conversation is close to what uneducated truck drivers or slum
dwellers
would have when in an argument. In our case we do it using incomprehensible and
advanced English. Nobody succeeds in convincing anyone. It does not cost us
anything
to respond to somebody's opinion without abusing him with strong words,
regardless
of what his intentions might be. If we do not agree with something, why call
the
other person naive, brainless, senseless and the newly invented bigot? He has
built
his opinion based on his previous experience and has expressed it to discuss it
in a
public forum. The intention may very well be to incite a feeling among
like-minded
members and provoke those who disagree. If you do not agree, you may try to
justify
so. Simply using harsh words will not change anything in his brain where his
opinion
is stored. You do not succeed in convincing the other person if you raise your
voice. Just as a louder voice does not imply that you are right, so is the case
with
harsh words.

If someone tells you that what you are saying is utterly wrong, do you
instantly
change your own opinion? You would if the other person convincingly justifies
why he
thinks you are wrong without insulting you in public. I find a lot of debates
on
these forums which have disintegrated into a sledge fest. One harsh word leads
to
another. You can always blame it on the other person to have started it, while
the
other person blames it on you. What results is a truck-driver-like free-for-all
over
the internet.

My humble suggestion to everyone on public forums:
If you disagree with what someone has posted, do not jump to the conclusion
that his
intention is bad. May be it is in fact bad, but you should respond with the
assumption that he is unaware of something you are aware of. Be of help and
enlighten him. Make at least one attempt at that. We will gradually see more
and
more posts making it to the forum without moderation when we stick to simple
ethics.

Can we all resolve to follow basic human manners while using public forums and
put
them to some noble use they were created for, having fruitful discussions about
Goa?

Happy New Year
Melvyn Ferrao,
Agacaim

I think the solution is simple. If what Melvyn writes is true (and I have no
reason to doubt), why are intelligent Goans on GX?  By definition, the purpose
of GX is to display the power of poppycock.

Those who engage in "bizarre debates" on goanet, should be placed on an
automatic delete list..  If their post is opened by oversight, and the first
three lines is same old ... same old ... same old, there is the delete button.

My reading of goanet, some members have too much time on their hands. And
few use goanet for their free entertainment.  They should goggle the blogs of
their favorite stand-up comedians. The readers will have a  much better laugh
from a professional comedian; than from a wannabe groping for something
brilliantly-stupid to write.  But perhaps what these writers and readers  need
is a hefty dose of 'Truth Serum' like Fred's description of "grown, mature
men".:=))

Hmm...,  (? on purpose) Fred did not use terms like 'smart' ... 'intelligent'.
Are the "grown, mature men" using the goanet and GX writings as an alter-ego to
spice-up their sex lives?  As a  suggestion, in the New Year these writers
could drown their woes in single malts and sirloin grease.

A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all  Keep smiling!

Regards, GL

Very true. If it wasn't so sad, it would have been funny!
I also think it is unbecoming of grown, mature men (very few women survive
these bizarre debates) to keep flogging the same issue ceaselessly. If someone
doesn't want to get convinced by your logic, leave him alone when two
persons have a one-on-one slanging match, it becomes boring for everyone else
on the list!

Time for the silent majority to speak out, and say what kinds of
discussions they like and dislike. Also time for them to cease being
silent, and post something. Better to light one candle, etc, etc...
