Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. --- - GOACAN to observe Consumer Rights Awareness Fortnight GOACAN is observing a Consumer Rights Awareness Fortnight from 8th March with the focus Assert Rights, Pursue Remedies. The awareness campaign will begin with a program by the women volunteers of Consumer Forums on International Womens Day with the theme Women Consumers Speak Up. The program will highlight the struggle of women consumers on issues such as Bus Transport, Health sanitation, Rations unfair public distribution system and welfare facilities for Senior Citizens. The Right to Know and the Right to SAY NO as well as the rights of women consumers to participate in the decision making process at Panchayat, Municipal and State level will also be highlighted. During the fortnight GOACAN will highlight the need for Consumer Literacy in the Towns, Villages and Campuses of the State so that consumers make a determined effort to read their rights and write their complaints. Special focus will be given during the fortnight to the grievance redressal mechanisms of public sector undertakings providing for LPG, Posts Telecom and the State Govt. service providers of Road transport, ferry services, electricity and water supply. The theme of the World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2012 Our money, our rights: campaigning for real choice in financial services will be promoted by GOACAN during the awareness fortnight with a focus on Choice as a fundamental consumer right. Volunteers will organise a 'phone in' with the Departments of Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs, Legal Metrology, Food Drug Administration, Reserve Bank of India, Goa Police Economic Offences Cell and the Public Works Department. During the fortnight GOACAN will publicize the postal address, official email and telephone numbers of the various Departments at the local State level, highlight the redressal avenues available such as the Consumer Conciliation Committee, District Consumer Redressal Forums, State Consumer Redressal Commission and Public Grievance Redressal officers at the Taluka District level. Awareness messages will also be circulated to Schools, HSS and Colleges through the Consumer Welfare Clubs for the benefit of the students and teachers. Help others be better informed CONSUMERS - --- GOACAN to observe Consumer Rights Awareness Fortnight --- The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) will observe a Consumer Rights Awareness Fortnight this June with the theme Consumers Be Alert, Stay Safe. The fortnight long campaign which will begin on 25th June State Consumer Rights Day, seeks to promote awareness of consumer rights, the responsibilities of the consumer, the complaint procedures and redressal mechanisms available to consumers in Goa. During the fortnight GOACAN alongwith the village based Consumer Forums and campus based Consumer Clubs Cells will highlight the importance of Consumer Literacy so that consumers make an effort to Read their rights and Write their complaints. Keeping in mind the monsoon season GOACAN will focus on Food Medicine Safety and its importance to the health of the consumers as well as precautions that consumers need to take to prevent malaria other vector borne diseases. GOACAN will also stress on precautions that need to be taken to prevent accidents, fire hazards disasters in case of road transport, electricity supply and use of LPG cylinders. In order to draw public and media attention to consumer issues during the fortnight visits will be organised to super markets, grocery stores, pharmacies and shops selling electrical goods to check for counterfeit, fake, spurious adulterated goods, the implementation of ISI Mark, weights measures and Packaged Commodities rules. Consumer Forum activists will also organise complaint phone in's with the Commercial Tax, Legal Metrology, Food Drug Administration, Civil Supplies, Transport and other consumer related Departments. A drive will be undertaken to alert students on being cheated in ways such as paying for courses not duly Recognised or Accredited, courses not having facilities as promised at the time of admission, course fee discounts, special offers and other promotional schemes which are doubtful in advertisements that appear in the print, audio visual media and on websites. During the fortnight consumer activists will highlight the redressal avenues available such as the Consumer Conciliation Committee, District Consumer Redressal Forums and Public Grievance Redressal officers at the District and Taluka level. Complaint Boxes Books, Tel. Nos, Emails, formats and procedures for redressal of service related problems of LPG, Kerosene, Electricity, Telephones, Posts and PWD water supply will also be publicized. GOACAN will join consumer organisations world wide to focus on Food Medicine Safety and its importance to the health of the consumers on World Consumer Rights Day 15th March. It will lay special emphasis to support Consumer Internationals campaign to stop the marketing of unhealthy food to children and the generation of Junk Food. GOACAN will also intensify the national level crusade in Goa against the spread of counterfeit, fake, spurious adulterated goods. In order to draw public and media attention to consumer issues during the fortnight visits to super markets, grocery stores, pharmacies and shops selling electrical goods to check products and take samples, to check the bus transport service and the implementation of weights measures rules will be organised.
