Hi Sergio,

I have sent you 4 sets of zipped mp3 files to your email address.

I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I have. Yes they include a couple
of his compositions.  Having said that, all tracks have unique Noel
intoductions.

Please advise me when you have downloaded them.  Thanks.

Regards from Melbourne,

Gabriel

2012-05-29 Thread Professor Noel Flores
Dear Gabriel !

This is Sergio Flores, son of the late Prof. Noel Flores reaching out to
you.

I am desperately searching for any old audio-material from my father and
stumbled upon a Goanet message, stating that you had some CDs with him
performing mandos on the piano. Would this also include his own compositions
by any chance ?

Even if this is not the case, is there any chance you could provide me with
a copy ? This would mean a lot to me.

Kind regards from Vienna,

Sergio

Hi Victor,

Alas, no recordings of my Dad's concerts are
available. I tried AIR way back in 2002-2003, and
though recordings were made by both Emissora de Goa
and AIR, either the tapes have not been archived
properly or they have been recycled.

The only copy of a concert in 1963 (for Nehru) was
apparently zapped by the customs or security X-Ray
en-route from Macao to Goa by DHL, inspite of all the
warnings on the label that it contained sensitive
magnetic material.

We had a couple of reel-to-reel tapes at home, but it
appears that these inadvertently got relegated to the
dustbin in one of the "clean-up operations" undertaken
by one of the relatives.

The CDs which AT is on about are the commemorative CD
which I compiled "Life and Times of Maestro Antonio de
Figueiredo" on the occasion of his birth centenary (20
Aug 2003) based on his own interview in Portuguese at
the AIR (programa renascença) with Dr. Carmo Azavedo
and memories from my cousins, and a couple of articles
written by Antonio "Oboe" Noronha and Fernando do
Rego. The other CD is a compilation of mandos / tunes
played by Noel Flores (piano) and other
instrumentalists (some of them my cousins) and
singers.

If you are interested, please drop me a line by
private email giving me your postal address, and I
will ensure you get them.

Cheers,

Gabriel.

My dear Gabriel,
When you so kindly showed Lea and me around Melbourne not so long ago,
and even entertained us in your own home, it never occurred to me that you
might have some recordings of performances conducted by your esteemed
father, Maestro Antonio de Figueiredo. I would gladly have offered to buy
some copies not just for my own use but also to distribute to friends who,
like me, never had the good fortune to hear him perform in public.
Can you please let me know whether these rare recordings are now or
will be at some time commercially available, and what the approximate cost
might be?
 Very best regards,
 Victor Rangel-Ribeiro

Frederick,

To give its full name, it was Serviços Anónimos de
Navegação Interfluvial (S.A.N.I.), otherwise
colloquially known as Navegação. See where Bar
Caravella was – if it still exists – might still have
an illuminated sign somewhere saying S.A.N.I.

Cheers,

Gabriel.

This is a good example of a bright idea. But how much do we know about such
transportation systems on the Amazon, Danube, Ganga, Nile, Rhine, Yangtze
and Zambezi rivers to name just a few biggies? Also how much do we know
about such systems in use in cities like London, New York, Venice etc. In
Goa itself there are a variety of operating models such as ore
transportation, river crossing ferries, boat cruises, casinos and floating
restaurants. A comprehensive analysis should uncover the promsies and
pitfalls of what is being suggested on goanet. Anybody game for it?

In 1994, politicians in Goa looked at 'remedial measures' to
improve the State's transport system. They focussed on the
need to use Goa's inland waterways to "lessen the burden of
road traffic". Till date, nothing much has happened.

In past decades, there were launch services between places
like Panjim and Sanvordem (with a halt at Ribandar), and
another from Panjim to Naroa and Aldona. Studies show that
out of a total length of 555 kms of important rivers in Goa,
some 360 kms are navigable at present with varying depths.
The Mandovi, Zuari rivers and their tributaries are navigable
upto 169 kms. Some "more navigable" rivers include Terekhol
to Arondem (upto 32 kms), Chapora to Colvale (32 kms),
Mandovi (102 kms with branches, like the Madai, Khandepar,
Sanquelim, Bicholim/Volvoi, Mapusa, Cumbarjua Canal), Zuari
river (upto the Sanvordem bridge, 64 kms and upto Sanguem in
high tides), Sal river (upto 18 kms), Talpona river (9 kms),
Galgibaga river (5 kms).

Even in colinial times, eight motor-launches were run under
the Navigacao fluvial. These connected Panjim to Sanvordem
(stopping at Ribandar, Old Goa, Cumbarjua, Kundaim, Dongri,
Marcaim, Undir, Durbhat, Borim, Rachol, and Sanvordem);
Panjim to Volvoi (via Ribandar, Old Goa, Piligao and Surla);
Panjim to Aldona (stopping at Borim, Bando, Ecoxim, Pomburpa,
Amadi and Calvim); Panjim to Verem and Panjim to Mormugao.

"If inland waterways are properly harnessed, they will
provide a quick, comfortable and economical transportation
facilities for both passengers and cargo traffic," said the
"Report of the House Committee on Remedial Measures to
Improve Transport System in Goa" (1994).

Question: why didn't anything happen!
