Re: [Goanet] Goan Mums and Dads/To Mercy & Roland

2006-09-09 Thread Mercy Fernandes
Selma, I am not against Rolands' idea of honoring Goan Mums and Dads.
Considering the years of hard work, sacrifice and love that parents put in
raising children, I don't think "one day" is enough to honor them. That's why
I still think that small tokens of love and appreciation should be expressed
throughout the year and not just on one day!

Dear Mercy,

In other words you are saying Roland can take his idea
and put it where the sun doesn't shine :))

Selma,
Calm down, babe. I know you think you saw an
opportunity here, but, if you re-read what Mercy said,
and what I said and Roland before me, we are all on
the same page, even though at first glance we may
sound at odds.

Even Mercy acknowledged that they celebrate Mother's
Day and Father's Day in Bandra.

Where did either I or Roland suggest that appreciation
for our parents must start and end and be restricted
in any way? Of course we show them appreciation day
in and day out in big and small ways, but doesn't that
become part of the norm, when compared to one special
day that is their's alone?

Does Independence Day mean that we forget about our

Now, Roland this may seem like a setback to your
well-intentioned notion, but believe me you will be
grateful in 10 years to come. Just think, how you
won't have to needlessly defend the fact that it was
your idea, even if say Mario then propagated it. You
won't be embroiled in producing facts and figures
pertaining to this idea, accused of trying to be a
glory hog, or anything of the sort. :))

Most of all be grateful that Mercy wasn't involved in
arranging all the meetings and functions that would
follow in honour of this day, because apparently there
would be a lot of novenas in the offing, I mean
offering :))

I am grateful to my mum and dad for what they did for me. However, I think
mums and dads all over the world should be honored and not on one day alone.
When I was growing up in Bandra, Mumbai we did celebrate Mother's Day on July
26 and Father's Day on March 19. I am referring to our local church where we
faithfully attended the Novena preceding the feast to pray for our parents.
I think gratitude can be expressed in small ways throughout the year, not just
on one day!

I second and recommend Roland's heartfelt suggestion.

Living in the US, it has become our custom to show our
appreciation for our parents in a special way,
regardless of where they may reside, on the days set
aside in the US just for this purpose, on Mother's Day
and Father's Day.

While we honor Goa and Goans with World Goa Day, could we find a way
to honor our Goan Mums and Dads in some collective way also? They will
always remain in our individual hearts but we must bring our joy,
gratitude and celebration out in the open to tell them, wherevere they
are that:

1. We appreciate their hard work and monetary sacrifices to make us what we are.
2. We thank them for understanding that in the future of their
children, education would play an important part.
3. We see how large problems in their marriages they would make small
so that we would have two parents.
4. We benefit from the values of faith and morals, humility and
helpfulness they demonstrated to us by example.
5. We forgive for the many physical punishments they made us endure
not in anger, but in the belief that it would make us better.
6 We remember what it is to be a Goan because they were Goans before
they were anything else.
and simply because
7. They mostly lived more for us than for themselves.

I don't care how we do it, nor who is credited for suggesting it. What
matters to me as it should matter to all of us is that we should be
able to do it.
