Inaugural of M.A, M.Com and M.Sc. Programmes at St. Xavier's.


The inaugural function of the Post Graduate Department for the Academic Year 
2009-2010 was held on 17th July, 2009, at the college hall with Samantha 
Fernandes, 
the compere of the day, welcoming the Chief Guest, Dr. S. R. Shetye, Director, 
NIO, 
Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa, the Principal, Mr. Hervin Furtado, the Vice-Principal 
and 
the faculty and the students of the M.A, M.Com and M.Sc programmes.

After invoking God's Blessings, through a prayer, conducted by Ms. Tina D'Cunha 
and 
Ms. Varsha Yallagi, the Chief Guest, the Principal, and Faculty-Student 
representatives participated in the traditional ritual of the lighting of the 
lamp.

Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa delivered the welcome address and observed that the 
educational system in India is undergoing a change of Creativity and Innovation 
with 
Mr. Kapil Sibal, Minister, HRD, initiating this change. Fr. de Sa, reiterated 
that 
the change is necessary at all levels of education, pand that good teaching and 
research are the fundamental elements of a good educational institute. He 
concluded 
by valuing the partnership of St. Xavier's College with NIO and hoped it would 
continue by collaborating with them on various fronts.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Shetye, who grew up in Mapusa, expressed his joy to 
participate 
in the inaugural function at Xaviers, as this visit reminded him of his 
childhood 
days when he used to come to St. Xavier's campus to play cricket. He stated 
that the 
Indian educational system is at the crossroads despite the impact of the Indian 
economy around the globe which was due to its students. He believed that in 
order to 
sustain growth in terms of quality, certain elements were required. He stressed 
that 
Innovation was one of them and that students who could formulate and answer 
questions were required. Further, he spoke about the Nano car, as a product of 
innovation and economic prosperity. He also endorsed the fact of research 
imbibed 
into teaching and felt it was necessary in starting Post Graduate Programmes. 
He 
assured that the weather station set up by NIO at Xavier's would be upgraded.

A skit titled "We are the world" was then enacted by the Part II students of 
M.A 
Psychology. Dr. Suhas Shetgovekar elucidated on the various programmes and 
activities undertaken by the Abbé Faria Post Graduate Department of Psychology. 
A 
song "Heal the World" was performed by the Part II students of M.Com. Ms. Jane 
Lobo 
provided a background of the M.Com department which was followed by a fusion 
dance 
by the Part II students of M.Sc. Dr. Tushar Anvekar acquainted the audience 
with the 
M.Sc in Physical Chemistry programmes. Ms. Flavia Travasso delivered the vote 
of 
thanks and the programme ended with the singing of the College anthem.
