There are many successful programmes feeding school children.  One such is
Akshay Patra run by ISKCON.  At:

it is mentioned: “The organization distributes freshly cooked, healthy meals
daily to 1.3 million underprivileged children in 9,000 government schools
through 20 locations in 9 states across India.”

The programme is run with the support from many well-wishers who make up the
difference from what the government pays, and what it costs.
