Re: [Goanet] Indian govt discovers it has balls...
Domnic, is it possible that the Saudi sense of what is right or wrong (depiction of gods as images, non-Koranic religious texts) just clashes with the standards of others? If so, whose conceptions should hold valid in Saudi Arabia itself? When I was a young student in West Germany many moons ago, I found that smooching on a train was quite acceptable, but a group of 15 well-pigmented twenty-something-year-olds from various parts of the Third World sharing a hearty joke on the same train caused consternation! We need to remind ourselves that religious tolerance wasn't a given in most parts of the world till the 19th century. I'm impressed by countries like Malaysia and Bangladesh where, for the most, religion is quite a personal matter contrary to the stereotypes we have and often promote about Muslims. (The latter has a fundamentalist problem in pockets, much like India.) I'm sure there must be many other such countries, which one has not visited. But, for some reason -- or is it, for a reason? -- Saudi Arabia is always created into the poster boy when we need to make a whipping boy of The Other! August 20 - WORLD GOA DAY Celebrating the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 For a list of World Goa Day events see: http://worldgoaday2009.blogspot.com You are right, Rajan. Every non-Muslim is harassed at the Saudi Arabian immigration and customs office, but Hindus are indeed singled out because they think they are 'kaafir' - people without a religion. No idols/religious pictures are allowed into the Kingdom; when found, they are dumped in a trash can right under one's nose. What is shocking is that they don't even respect our Holy Bible. When they come across one, it, too, is sent to the trash can! That's not all, one is further punished by deporting him/her from the airport itself. Usually, agents of good companies give an extensive orientation to new employees being hired for the Kingdom but many don't do it resulting in harassment and/or deportation of new recruits without even entering the country. Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Anjuna, Goa Mob: 09420979201 -Original Message- From: Rajan P. Parrikar Hindus are indeed singled out for humiliation BECAUSE they are Hindus. There have been so many instances of Hindu idols being confiscated (and perhaps trashed) by the Saudi immigration authorities. This does not negate the fact that non-Hindu Indians are also harassed and humiliated by the Saudis.

RESPONSE: Before you profess to know something you have to know a little more than you seem to know. While Europeans are allowed to practice Christianity, Asian Christians have to go underground to practice their religion in Saudi Arabia. And it's not as if Indian Muslims are feted, placed on a chair and carried around town. No Arab considers Indian Muslims to be their "brethren". So you see, the humiliation is not directed towards religion per se, it is racial, so stop acting like a martyr. > Axiom for the day: people who assert that they do not > usually respond to or read what Rajan Parrikar writes > usually respond to and read what Rajan Parrikar writes. August 20 - WORLD GOA DAY Celebrating the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 For a list of World Goa Day events see: http://worldgoaday2009.blogspot.com I was about to reply to Dr. Barad and now Rajan writes about humiliation to Hindus in Saudi Arabia. I was even shocked to read that Dr. Barad visited Saudi Arabia...:) I ask them Why do Hindus or anyone want to come to Saudi Arabia, when they know that this Country is not a Free Democratic Country like India and that All forms of non-muslims worship is banned in Saudi Arabia by the Govt. I have been working in Saudi for the last 18 years and there are thousands of Hindus working here for the last 30-40 years. Most of the Engineers working for Sabic, Mobile and Aramco are ex IPCL,BPCL,Herdilla, Reliance etc. Even Wipro & Reliance Telcom has signed contracts and thousands of their staff are in Saudi. Most of the Indian Hindus working are mostly in Management or as Advisors. The past 18 years I am staying with my Hindu friends and they do not have any problems here. Some of the Hindus have their own business in partnership with the Saudis. Recently we have seen a lot of Maharashtrians and Gujrati Hindus opening small small shops here. This is a peacefull country if you remain within the laws of the country. If you are traveling on work purpose for the first time, the immigration authorities do investigate, this is normal with everyone. August 20 - WORLD GOA DAY Celebrating the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 For a list of World Goa Day events see: http://worldgoaday2009.blogspot.com I don't usually respond to anything Rajan Parrikar has to say but I have to correct this martyred statement of his. Indians are humiliated in Saudi Arabia not because they are Hindus but because the Arabs routinely humiliate everyone they perceive to be making a beeline to their shores with a begging bowl, so rest assured everyone gets the same treatment on Arab shores. Sort of what you are proposing we do to the "ghattis" that come to Goa. And while we are on the subject of humiliations may the Indian government also protest the treatment dalits receive at the hands of Hindu Brahmins, not to mention the treatment Muslims and Christians receive at the hands of fringe groups. No one holds the upper moral ground in this world. Not even you, with you mouth which needs a good rinsing with Persil. Best, selma --- On Sun, 8/16/09, Rajan P.
