June 4, 2019 Read about the sordid Sonsoddo story. A recap on how politicians have actually used the stinking mess to gain brownie points THE WEEK THAT WAS What has also been the problem is that every incoming government has its own friends to give the contract of the dump to and they would rather let Goans down, but not their crony capitalists. An example was when Urban development minister Joaquim Alemao had visited Sonsoddo during the 2009 fire and had hotly contested any criticism about Hyderabad-based Hyquip saying, “It had worked quite efficiently and I can vouch for that. It was the delay on the part of our government to make payments to them in time that the problems arose for Hyquip.” ... Here’s the fun part, the loan is for buying vehicles and not for the purposes you thought as you read the above. It gets weird. MAY 21, 2019 Lion Roars Vijai will have to “weaponise” himself against the BJP Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardessai might have to “weaponise” himself now that the BJP’s strength has gone up by three. It won 13 in 2017 and its manufactured strength after the two MGP MLAs Manohar Ajgaonkar and Dipak Pawaskar (and earlier, the two Congress MLAs) defected in March became 14, but 21 is still the half-way mark. It could be a question of not “if” but “when” the same fate that befell his bête-noire and fellow deputy CM, Sudin Dhavalikar, who was ousted from the cabinet unceremoniously, could await him HAS TTAG LOST THE PLOT ALREADY? – 2 Freebee for rich tourists The Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) plans to run a bus service between Dabolim airport and Mobor soon for what obviously is intended to help high-end tourists and a continuation of the war the government has had with “the bad boys of the taxi trade”. As a tax payer, this will become an additional burden on you because the KTC already has an exclusive tourist service from Calangute and Panjim to the airport at a measly Rs 150-100. In any other tourist destination in the world, business sense would have dictated that the rate would be at least five times that (in the local currency) and this (times five more figure) would still be less than a third of the cab fare in that particular country. The Tourism and Travel Association of Goa (TTAG) naturally did not object.. -- *When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. www.goanspirit.com Lead Article HAS TTAG LOST THE PLOT ALREADY? – 1 (New Series) "Tourism & Travel Association of Goa's latest rant now is about the foreign junkets by the tourism department and minister. This is not the new normal. It is as old as when Goa’s tourism grew into an industry entirely motivated by personal gain while stumbling forward without a vision. In fact the stakeholders have turned their backs on the degradation of beaches beaches and tourism which is turning away the good tourist. Which is why TTAG needs a scapegoat. Grandiose plans, all commercially unsound and risky, have been made at great expense by consultants from outside Goa and put on ice." LIONROARS ..‘Adaptive reuse’ Yeah. Those two words I love. Takes me back a long time. The Times of India reported that the “much awaited restoration work of the Sakhali fort will start soon”. The focus will be on “recreation space for senior citizens…as well as space where small events can be hosted” - reported on April 29 titled ‘Sakhali fort restoration to focus on adapative reuse.’ Senior citizens. Seriously! This government can’t do much for senior citizens already, but it would like to do it in the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s constituency Sakhali. Also the phrase “small events” which could turn out eventually to be the very big destructive EDMs, worries me... -- *When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. Dear Lionel/Puspa, I have posted this comment on your website w.r.t. Lion Roars -8 but am not sure it has been posted. Therefore I am printing it here as this view must be known by Goans. Comment: We commend the author for his indepth investigation and identification into the Navy's holdings in Goa. And he has made a very studied surmise that the Navy is not likely to move out from Dabolim but rather fortify it's holdings more and more even through bellingerent methods. We do admit that this is true because the author believes that Goa will be forever ruled by the National parties, more specifically the Congress and/or the BJP by taking turns. And the author has noted that these national parties shy away from poking fingers, even jokingly, at the armed forces considering them to be the LORDS that must be SALUTED at all times. BUT the author has never imagined that a time may come that GOA may not be ruled anymore by one or the other above mentioned parties but GOA's own Regional Party which might consider that not only the Indian Navy and the Army in Goa is Illegal, but India itself is illegally occupying Goa [until the promised by Nehru PLEBISCITE is undertaken]. The author must understand that such a regional GOA High Command can put the Navy, and /or the Army on NOTICE within three months of it's taking charge of Goa's administration. And the Navy, especially, will hv no other alternative but to vacate Dabolim entirely and shift it's operations to Seabird Karwar or elsewhere as Dabolim is the Civilian Airport and the Navy has no right to keep occupying it forever, illegally. Also the author must know that the Mighty Indonesia was thrown out of East Timor through the action of the United Nations and the zeal of the East Timorean people, especially that of Xanana Gusmao. The author must understand that just because the Navy handles guns et al, it can scare or keep scared real authentic, bonafide GOANS forever, whom they have kept pacified so far through the courting action by the NATIONAL PARTIES which behave like cooks and butlers for the Navy and/or the armed forces. With its fanatical craze for secrecy, no one knows which of these aircraft categories were retired, but I do see all of them with the exception of the recon aircraft flying over Velsao where I live and disturbing the peace. As things stand, Manmohan Singh will not be prime minister after 2014, Parrikar may or may not complete his term as CM, but one thing is for sure, the navy is not moving out of Dabolim. I have said this before, it is a bad tenant come to stay. It is like a pesky mundcar who wants more and more of your land. It’s like Panjim’s ancient tenants who pay rents of Rs 30-60 in prime locations. Need I say more? At the time it looked more like it had drummed up an alibi to make money. Here is proof of the pudding. The project envisaged acquiring 9,000 acres (4046.86 sq m). Approximately 6,000 acres was apportioned for the airport. Can you smell the lucre here – it was the planned aerotropolis modelled on the lines of similar facilities in Singapore and Frankfurt. The ministry of civil aviation quickly gave its formal site clearance and approved the preparation of a techno economic feasibility report, while the ministry of defence gave its green signal. Take note of this because as I detail other failed airports, you will find that the defence services have never objected to civilian aspirations, except in the case of Goa. While you are at it, ask yourself on what basis did the Manorhar Parrikar government determine how much land was required for the planned Mopa Greenfield. http://goanspirit.com/index.php/lead/294-runaway-failures-a-tale-of-failed-airport-projects-1 *Waste Management in Germany: Polluter Pays – 1*.
