[Goanet] LOK SABHA ELECTIONS

2009-04-08 Thread Aires Rodrigues

Remembering Aquino Braganca (b. 6 April 1924), who fought for freedom
of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa. An online tribute
 http://aquinobraganca.wordpress.com/ (includes many historical
 references, some photographs and documents)

On 23rd of April the electorate of Goa gets to exercise their franchise to
send two MPs to the Lok Sabha. Over the last few years there has been a
total breakdown of governance in the State with soaring levels of
corruption. Digambar Kamat’s only priority has been to safeguard his chair
at the cost of the State. It has been virtually the Bombay High Court at Goa
that has been bringing solace to Goa’s Aam Aadmi by keeping a check on the
mounting illegal and unconstitutional decisions taken by the Government.

Goa has been a witness to public demonstrations almost every day. The
Congress government has been bringing out people to the streets. So the
forthcoming election is an opportunity to teach a lesson to a party that
does not respect people’s wishes and aspirations.

[Goanet] LOK SABHA ELECTIONS: MY CHOICE

2009-04-18 Thread Aires Rodrigues
To effectively deal with the global economic crisis our country is in dire
need of some political stability and good effective governance. In a
democracy the people get a government they deserve and the choices before
the Goan electorate on 23rd April are very clear cut.

About the overnight opportunistic switching of parties by Jitendra
Deshprabhu the less said the better. The Congress gave the NCP the North Goa
seat and a candidate too. What a package!

My vote is no secret. It would deservedly go to Mr. Sripad Naik who hails
from my village. A very sincere, humble and accessible person who has
reached out to the people at all times. If I had to reside in the South my
lawyer colleague, the talented down to earth Mr. Narendra Savoikar would
have been my unanimous choice.

Francisco Sardinha’s involvement in the Marks scandal when he was Education
Minister in 1980 and his wrong priorities over the years deserves that he be
given the much needed political rest. He should in fact have been grateful
to the BJP for having been able to sit and rock the Chief Minister’s chair
which he lost while on a trip to Australia to visit the Kangaroos in Oct
2000. After decades in politics so much is his political immaturity that he
even showed disrespect to Sonia Gandhi when he became Chief Minister only to
later fall at her feet seeking re-entry into Congress party, a party known
for its divisive communal and caste politics. The pair of scissors ( kator
) should not be used to split the anti-Congress votes but to snip the evil
Congress hand itself.

>It is either Manmohan Singh or LK Advani.

There is a saying in Konkani --- "Xitafundem mith khai naka."
Roughly translated it means -- Dont eat salt before the rice -- or some
such thing.

Floriano insults Indian people when he says that the choice is between Manmohan
and Advani. The voting is yet to take place; there are tons of candidates
for the Indian people to choose from and in all their wisdom let us hope
that they will choose the right candidates.

Mathany is one of them.

How can one be sure before hand that there are only two choices for the PM's
post ? Not just that, who knows what power any upcoming PM will have?

Our current choice is to elect our best representative. And surely Mathany
is the best. There is nothing ambivalent in Mathany saying that he will
decide the PM based on the one who will do the best for Goa

Whatever one may say, one thing surely one can be assured --- no one can do
worse than Sardinha, and the other jokers we have elected in the past!
In other words, Mathany definitely deserves a chance much more over
these other jokers (for want of a better word).

Samir

Goa Heritage Action Group releases PARMAL, the journal of the GHAG, on Apr 25,
2009 at 5.30 at Gallery Gitanjali, Fontainhas. Price Rs 200 in Goa.

In all the 12 Assembly segments ( e.g. Siolim, Saligao, Santa Cruz, Santo
Andre etc. ) of
Bardez and Ilhas talukas, the percentage of voters who exercised their
franchise
was above 50%.

However, in the 12 Assembly segments of Salcete and Mormugao talukas the
percentage
of votes polled was consistently below 50%.

Let us hope that Digambar Kamat has not judged wrongly the feelings of South
Goa
electorate.

A clasic example of an Ostrich burying its head in the sand in full view of
extreme danger.

This 15th. Lok Sabha Elections has nothing to do with Shripad Naik, OR
Jitendra Deshprabhu Or Sardinha, Or Matanhy Saldanha Or whoever.

It is either Manmohan Singh or LK Advani.
And those who want to give the reins of my beloved country in the hands of
traitor and criminal LK Advani, I perceive them as TRAITORS.

So much for understanding politics .

My stance would be neutral if LK Advani was not the Prime Ministerial
Candidate of the BJP.

response:

I do not trust politicians in general - mainly because trustworthy
individuals do not get elected. A classic example is - Tony Correia
Afonso from Benaulim. The people from Benaulin KNOW that Tony is
trustworthy, honest and capable. BUT, Tony will never get elected from
Benaulim. He, unfortunately, is too honest for the corrupt people who
vote.

Even so I wish Mr Naik and Mr Savoikar well.

I do suggest however that Aires has a very poor record of supporting
losing candidates.

About scandals, I'd say this: He who lives in glass house - should not
throw stones at others.

Re: [Goanet] LOK SABHA Elections : MY Choice

2009-04-19 Thread floriano
Samir has not understood the thread of floriano's thinking. Time has come
when the best candidate ( in this case surely Matanhy for South) must
declare his preferences now so that the voters know how he will vote in case
there is a vote to prove the strenght in the house.

India has been given/declared just two probables for the Prime Minister's
post. Surely there are many deserving others who could would and could be
prefered once election results are declared. But floriano is working on the
premise of the two probales already declared.

If not Manmohan Singh, it could be any body else. Floriano will be happy if
it is not a Congress lead government. India requires a change and Congress
requires to cool itself in the opposition benches. If not Congress, it must
also not be the BJP aka NDA. What floriano is saying is that Matanhy must
tell us if he will root for Advani as the PM if he is on the choice.

That will make everything clear to start with. No hidden agendas.

And there is no doubt in my mind that Matanhy is the best between all on
display excluding just one. Independent Ms. Salunke. It takes guts to do
what she is doing. And I like what she is doing.
And YES, we are going to choose our two best representatives to send to
Delhi. But these two best representatives must definately tell us if they
are going to choose LK Advani or someone else to sit on the chair of the
Prime Minister of India.

It will be better to eat a lot of salt in advance rather than wait for the
promised 'malai' later which might not be fortcoming at all.

[Goanet] Lok Sabha Elections - Goa Proves the Pintos Wrong

2009-05-16 Thread augusto pinto
"By the by: I probably got the Goan MP results right: BJP - south goa
and Congress north Goa. Correct me if I am wrong. In TV they showed
one BJP and one Congress." wrote upkamath to me.

Congratulations U.P.Kamath. Come and collect your prize in Moira.

I had said BJP would get both seats. The only person willing to
actually wager with me was Cecil Pinto who said both would go to the
Congress. Fortunately neither of the Pintos lose anything although I'm
willing to offer Cecil a cold cold cold drink in commiseration as
I've proved that he can be wrong..

Coming back to the results, if one looks carefully it was a close
thing which could have gone any which way. Now Sardinha will possibly
become a Minister as he has the skills. Although I like Shripad Naik
as a person, much more than Sardinha who is an arrogant so-and-so, he
is the sort who should be in State and not National politics. Menorah
Paprika is someone who could have benefited Delhi.

Shripad Naik IMNSHO after two terms in Parliament still does not have
a clue about what being an M.P. is all about. The local BJP wallahs
are however quite happy that he is safely out of the way in Delhi and
not messing up their lives here in Goa. Actually his presence locally
could have made quite a few Congress guys like Ravi Naik and Dayanand
Narvekar nervous so they too will be happy with the results.

Cheers
Augusto
