Please find the attached news story in Sunaparant Konkani Daily in
Devnagiri script that on our Beloved Bishops strong support on
teaching Konkani in Karnataka. In fact he is instrumental in bringing
Konkani in school as he gave permissions to 1500 students of 55
schools of Catholic board to teach Konkani in schools outside the
curriculam.

I feel proud about him as I gave him open invitation to take lead in
teaching Konkani in schools during the Childrens festival organised by
Kazulo Monthly Magazine held on 12th Nov 2006. I happened to be the
chief guest of the programme and Bishop was the president. I argued
that only if Konkani is taught in the schools of Karnataka then we
have the hope for the future of Konkani Language. Bishop replied to my
invitations and promised his whole hearted support. Also at the
offline stage he discussed with me the hurdles in bringing Konkani in
schools yet he promised me that he will try his best.

In fact Mangalore is the shining field for Konkani literature and also
for its readersship. Konkani in Kannada script is popular not only in
Karnataka but also in Maharashtra, major pocket cities of India, gulf,
Canada, USA and other major cities of the world.

There are FOUR weeklies, about 30 monthly, bimonthly periodicals,
about 300 regional parish bulletins published in Kannada script of
Konkani.

There are number of Novelists in Kannada script of Konkani like J. S.
Alvares, V. J. P. Saldanha, Jerry Kulshekar who have written more than
50 novels individuals.

Konkani periodicals are awailable in various stalls of Mangalore,
Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, other major citis of Mumbai, Various
gulf countries, Other countries like UK, Canada, Australia, USA,
ITALY, Germany etc. Also Konkani Books in Kannada script too are
awailable in various book stalls.

There is vast number of literature like Novels, Storys, Poems,
Childrens literature, Essays, Articles, Religious literature, Songs,
Hymns in Kannada script of Konkani.

In fact church was the back bone to flourish Konkani in Karnataka and
these people carried this light in other cities and other parts of the
wolrld.

Also the efforts of Catholic board Director Fr. Valerian DSouza,
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademy President Eric Ozario, Konkani
Lekhakanhco Ekvott President Dr. Edward Nazareth, Konkani Prachar
Sanchalan Presidnet Roy Castelino, Stephen Quadras also need to be
appreciated at this moment.

It is a glad news that Karnataka Govt has given permission to start
teacching Konkani in Kannada script in the primary schools of
Karnataka. It will be slowly extend up to the class tenth.
Konkani is already being taught in Kannada script at the university
level of Mangalore University in St. Aloysius College.
