Hello George,
What you say is true Fish and other foods have become expensive. Our own NRIs
are a cause as well. They just pay whatever the Fish seller asks because they
can afford it whereas the local goan may not afford it.No doubt tourism has
brought some level of prosperity to some sectors butr along wiuth it has come
associated evil such as paedophilia, Aids and STDs as well. The unfortunate
problem is that the govt officials are all not committed to the state but to
themselves and are busy filling their pockets as fast as possible.Even at the
Sarpanch level this is true.Unless we get a young bunch who are well educated
entrepreneurs at govt level with a commitment to make GFoa a proud state that
it once was and still is, we will have to bear with all the momsense that goes
on around us.

Hi Godfrey

So far there has been no will shown by the powers-that-be to make Goa a safe
place for tourists or to vigorously pursue justice (Scarlet).  It is true that
a decline in tourism will affect livelihoods but on the other side locals will
benefit. Fish and other foods will be less expensive for locals if tourism
declines. Currently, a pomfret can be around Rs 150/- at the Siolim tar if
available. How many locals can afford this?

It is a livelihood versus lives connection. Even if livelihoods related to
tourism will be impacted, the benefit of saving domestic and foreign tourist
lives by not coming to Goa is a benefit. Not to mention the adverse impact on
the ecology/environment and rampant illegal construction created to support the
influx of tourists, some of whom stay on and the migrant labor which supports
the influx.

I think tourism to Goa needs to discouraged for a number of reasons stated
above, until a sustainable development plan can be implemented. Right now, it
seems the worst of every aspect is allowed and the local Goan is made to
suffer. Why should local Goans suffer because of tourism and the tourist be at
risk of crime at the same time.

Hi George,
Thanjks for yr response. I agree with you that there is a decline in the law
and order situation in Goa. We need to energise trhe various community groups
to meet the press anbd get this matter publicly addressed so that the people at
large become aware and take action against ineffective policing. If police
presence is made more prominent at sensitilocations such as beaches, secluded
areas and other public places this might just give a message to the criminals
that Goa means business. By the way are these criminals actual goans or other
tourists of India origin who come in for a gang bang and end up committing
crimes for which Goa gets blamed. Furthermore are these cvrimes individually
committed or are they they work of organised gand members?? I love Goa and
would love to see Goa prosperous healthy and better than rest of the Indian
states.

Hi Godfrey

Sadly the law and order situation has deteriorated in Goa, along with the
political situation. On Sunday, there was reported gang violence leaving one
dead and two seriously injured at Siridao. This gang violence may not have
directly involved tourists but who is to say the lawless nexxus, including the
drug mafia is not involved like in the Scarlet murder case.

Foreign and domestic tourists have been murdered over the years in Goa. If we
cannot guarantee basic safety to the tourist, it is not fair to ask the tourist
to visit. In addition, Goa get terrible headlines. Better the tourist goes to
other places where they are safe.

The media should highlight the fact that the law and order situation in Goa is
deteriorating, and Goa is becoming less safe with the passage of time. Foreign
and domestic tourists should consider other destinations where crime rates are
lower.

[Goanet] Media Priorities: On Goa Being an Unsafe Place

2009-05-11 Thread augusto pinto
Whereas everyone in Goa including the journos have been stunned by the
revelations in the Mahanand serial murder case, the National media,
especially news channels like NDTV have been fixated by the death, in
suspicious circumstances noi doubt, of a 19 year old Russian girl.
They make it a point to say that,:this shows what an unsafe place Goa
has become, ESPECIALLY FOR FORIEGN TOURISTS.

While the death of the tourist is, no doubt, not a good thing, the
focus that the National media is giving her is bewildering. Her
behaviour would have been considered high-risk even in her own
country. On the other hand it is the alleged serial killings which
actually show Goa to be an unsafe place.

I'm not sure about the priorities, but to a layman it is as if the
National Media is saying: 1 White is more than equal to 10 lower
middle class Goans. Or sex involving Whites is far more exciting than
sex with Browns.
