New Miracle Takes Fr. Agnel Closer to Sainthood

Devotees of Venerable Agnelo D’Souza are excited after sending to Rome a report
of a miracle attributed to the Goan priest. Venerable Agnelo Gustavo Adolfo de
Souza, a member of the indigenous Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, died in
1927 and his canonization process began 20 years later. Rome declared him
venerable, the second stage in the canonization process, in 1986. Father
Hilario Fernandes, vice postulator of the cause, says although thousands of
miracles are attributed to the priest, his canonization process hit bottlenecks
on at least eight occasions. In one instance, a blood sample sent to Rome was
lost in transit.

The new miracle is about a 62-year-old woman, who suffered from metal
poisoning. She was admitted in a hospital and doctors said she would die. But
after the woman’s relatives prayed to Venerable Agnelo she recovered. Father
Fernandes said they sent the case to Rome on Nov. 15. “We hope this will clinch
his fate to be declared blessed,” he said. The priest, who belongs to the same
congregation as Venerable Agnelo, said doctors fear their hospitals and
profession would suffer if they certify a patient’s recovery is medically
unexplainable.

Father Fernandes claims Venerable Agnelo is second only in popularity saint
among people in Goa after Saint Francis Xavier. Fiona Carnerio, an Agnelo
devotee, says having a saint of the soil would help keep people’s faith intact.
Jesus Ribeiro, another Catholic, blamed Rome for going slow in processing the
cases of candidates from developing countries. The canonization process begins
with granting the title “Servant of God.” Candidates who fulfill certain
criteria are declared “Venerable.” The next stage is beatification, for which a
miracle attributed to the candidate is needed. Sainthood requires another
miracle under the same condition.

 Venerable Fr. Agnelo D'Souza!

Fr. Agnelo Gustavo Adolfo de Souza was born on January 21, 1869 in Gaumvaddy,
Anjuna, Bardez, Goa (India). Orphaned at the age of eleven, he was a brilliant
and devout student. Agnelo joined the Minor Seminary at Mapusa and then went to
Rachol Seminary. The house where Fr. Agnel was
bornhttp://www.goa-world.com/goa/fr-agnels/2.htm On July 17, 1897, the feast of
Our Lady of Pilar, Agnelo, then a Sub-Deacon, was admitted as a
candidate to the Missionary Society of St. Francis Xavier, Pilar, and on May
22, 1898, he made his first Profession. Ordained on September 24, 1898, Fr.
Agnelo first worked as a teacher and then in the Missions. In 1920, he was
appointed Spiritual Director in Rachol Seminary. The Seminarians found in him a
model to follow and feltthemselves secure in his guidance. On November 20, 1927
he died in odour of sanctity. He had suffered an acute cerebral thrombosis on
the previous day while he was preaching at the Vespers of Sacred Heart of
Jesus. Many thousands of favors have been published in various periodicals in
many parts of the world. Fr. Agnelo’s Tomb in Pilar attracts countless devotees
praying for his powerful intercession. The process of beatification is making
good but slow progress in Rome. On November 10, 1986 the Process of Life and
Virtues was approved by Pope John Paul II and he declared him Venerable. The
process on an alleged miracle has
been finished at Diocesan level and submitted to the Sacred Congregation in
Rome.

Peter D’Costa, known to everyone by his stage name ‘Prem Kumar’, needs no
introduction; he is one of the living legends of the Konkani stage. He is
basically a ‘partist’ and rarely sings songs. It was awfully nice of him to
sing a song in honor of Venerable Fr. Agnelo, the lyrics of which are as
follows:

Here is the NOVENA PRAYER FOR PETITIONS

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we gratefully acknowledge your plan for our
salvation, even by working miracles through your chosen servants. We thank you
for giving us your faithful servant, Fr. Agnelo, as an example of how to follow
in the steps of your beloved son, Jesus Christ. With our whole heart we pray
that you may lead us through your Spirit to imitate his saintly life. Grant us
also the favor we ask (mention the favor) as a sign that he now shares in the
Glory of our Risen Lord.

PRAYER FOR THE BEATIFICATION

Oh God of infinite mercy, we humbly prostrate at your feet. We beg for you,
with whole hearted trust, that if it be your Holy will, and if it serves our
salvation, grant Fr. Agnelo the honors of the altar through the solemn
declaration of Our Provident Mother, the Church. We ask this through Our Lord.
Amen.

Today, November 20, 2005, is the 78th death anniversary of Venerable Fr.
