Peter D'Souza. You see, JPD's impassioned refutation of the growing move to persuade lawyers in Goa not to represent committers of serious and dastardly crimes against society, struck a strong chord in my uncle's worried bosom. I must admit Uncle Exaltation has a vested interest in preventing Goan criminal lawyers from picking and choosing their cases. The story would take far too long to tell, but told it must. Then and only then, says my uncle, will the people of Goa be rid of parasitic legal thinking in the body politic (or is correct English the body judiciary?). It all started with one village lad getting the bright idea that the wedding of a panch in Assagao must on no account have aunt Visitation catering her sorpotel and sannas. Since frothing and foaming at the mouth was not viewed happily by this lad and since aunt Visitation was too powerful a figure in local circles not to be invited to cater at all, it was decided to ask her to make what they thought would be a harmless cold fish platter. Now anyone worth their salt who has attended a Goan Catholic wedding of any note in the Salcette taluka will know that the cold fish dish represents the highlight of the wedding banquet. People throughout Salcette and specially those native to Margao are known to elbow aside (literally) less hardy people in their mad rush to the table, mainly to help themselves to a generous portion of the cold fish. This despite the fact that every guest at every wedding where the said cold fish dish is served, inevitably has the runs during the entire morning following the wedding. If the reasons for this unhappy circumstance of the fish followed by runs is analysed, it will be discovered that (a) plastic gloves or any gloves at all are never considered when mincing and mixing the fish - apna haath jugganath, as they say - (b) since the fish is minced and then mixed with mayonnaise thus assuring it's taste, the most uncertain quality of fish is used and c) the cooks doing the honors with the fish are strangers to the science of refrigeration as a defence against the heat in Goa. Now, since the wedding was arranged in Assagao, the people there knew not a whit of the stories of the cold fish and the runs that are so well known by every Salcette family. And since aunt Visitation criminally underpaid the cooks she brought from Salcette to do the work, plus trustingly gave the money to buy the fish to uncle Exaltation who was of the opinion that good fish for the wedding should not compete with good liquor for his insides, added to the fact that electricity in Assagao can barely run the lights let alone the cooling, the banquet was bound to be a disaster. It would have been just another Salcette wedding albeit taking place in Bardez, had it not been for the bridegroom the panch being a man well known in every criminal court this side of the Mandovi. That accounted for his need to invite every well known criminal lawyer in his district. And the fact that all these gentlemen having partaken of this fish could not attend court for several days. Could you blame them for refusing that day on, to represent the panch in any of his cases? And further can you blame the panch for not only refusing to pay aunt Visitation and uncle Exaltation for their troubles but also to take them to court for one of the most heinous crimes committed in Bardez? Thus explains uncle's sudden love for democratic processes and enduring affection for Advocate Jos. Peter D'Souza or rather for his principled stand that every man (and woman) accused should be entitled to representation, no matter the crime. _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
