*Nobel for RDT founder?* Staff Reporter *Late Fr. Vincent Ferrer nominated for developmental work** ANANTAPUR: The founder of Rural Development Trust, late Father Vincent Ferrer of Spain, who died in June 2009 at the age of 89, is being considered for the Nobel Peace Prize 2010. Sources in Brussels and Spain told The Hindu during their visit to the district that the Spanish government has nominated the late cleric for the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding contribution to international relations through his selfless social work of uplifting the underprivileged in India. Sources in RDT, too, confirmed his nomination. The European Journalists Union recently gave a power-point presentation in Oslo University, Norway on the quality of work done by Fr. Ferrer through RDT, an organisation he established in 1969, and they are considered powerful advocates for awarding the Peace Prize to the legendary cleric. Since Fr. Ferrer is no more, the organisation he founded will be eligible to receive the award. However, the Nobel Foundation in 1974 altered its statutes discouraging awards posthumously. RDT worked for economic empowerment of the socially ostracised sections. It created avenues for employment, triggered land development on a massive scale and came to the rescue of small and marginal SC and ST farmers. It also established bridge schools, health centres and semi-corporate hospitals. Sister Anne Ferrer, widow of Fr. Vincent Ferrer, confirmed his nomination for the prestigious prize . ++ vjp *
