If the Portuguese were not ignorant, then why did they introduce into Goa a
portrait of Christ who, I emphasize, was born an Arab Jew, with a white skin,
blue eyes and light brown hair?

That the images come from Italy is well-known; under the Padroado agreement,
the Portuguese blindly accepted whatever they were fed by the Vatican - which
is another proof of their ignorance. And under the said agreement they misused
the catholic religion to achieve political objectives.

RESPONSE: I am inclined to agree with Dr. J.C. that statement by Bernardo de
Souza might not be malicious or prejudicial, obviously from his response here.

Re face of Jesus, spiritually we ought to see His face in every suffering
person whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me.

However, the Greeks have their icons, other Europeans may have theirs. There
are Indian madonnas, as there are African, Italian as well as Greek, each
modelled according to the prevailing images around the artist who painted or
carved it.

I could presume that the real face of Jesus appears to be the one left behind
in the Shroud of Turin, as indicated in a 3-d image generated by scientists
(whether or not the Turin Shroud has been proven as true)
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/face-jesus-revealed-10248139.

For a crucifix with a difference, see the crucifix hanging in the Brisbane's
cathedral of St.Stephen ...

Regardless of the above, pictures and images are not for adoration, they are
for remembering the person or concept they represent.

a: I found the picture (used by Aires) to be rude alright but not
objectionable. Each one makes a statement through one's words and
actions based on one's state of mind. That is how the psyche
functions. I have no right to object. We are, after all, what we are.

d: In my travels and stays in various countries, I have not found many
Goans (esp those with Catholic surnames) who live in Portugal or
Ireland and complain about European Superiority.

[Goanet] Objectionable picture of Jesus Christ

2013-01-18 Thread U. G. Barad

I came across the enclosed article.  Aries has every right to express his
displeasure of the chief minister comparing his suffering to that of Jesus
Christ.  And he has every right to say that he found the silence of the
Church disturbing.  But, I think, he could have expressed his displeasure in
a more refined way.

Incidentally, Aries says that the picture that he has depicted is not that
of Christ.  Can he say whose picture it is?  I have personally not seen the
picture.

A digitally altered image posted on Facebook allegedly of Jesus Christ has
prompted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa to file a police complaint
against a lawyer and activist who had uploaded it on the social networking
site.

The complaint lodged with Director General of Police Kishen Kumar has sought
action against activist Aires Rodrigues for hurting religious sentiments by
uploading an image of Christ showing the middle finger, Goa BJP's
vice-president Wilfred Mesquita told reporters here Monday.

This is a vulgar picture of Jesus Christ that he has uploaded in order to
make a point against the BJP. Such use of religious imagery is aimed at
creating hatred with a community, Mesquita said.

Rodrigues has in the past taken on both the Congress as well as the BJP
government over issues like governance and overspending.

The photo was uploaded days after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar reportedly
said that in his role as chief minister, he was suffering like Christ
himself.

The stoic silence by the Church on this outrageous and demeaning comparison
by the chief minister is deafening. A very sorry state of affairs,
Rodrigues said in his controversial Facebook post.

Rodrigues said that he was himself a born Catholic and the post was without
any malice and should offend none.

Nowhere in the post is it said that the picture accompanying the post was
that of Jesus Christ, the lawyer activist said.

Jesus was born an Arab Jew and could not possibly have had a white skin,
blue eyes and light brown hair (picture used by Aires). That portrait of
Jesus that we find in the Churches in Goa was based on both ignorance of
the Portuguese as well as an attempt by the European colonial powers to
prove their superiority, what I would call a political Jesus. Forensic
scientists have developed a likeness of Jesus; it was published some
years ago in the National Geographic and those who are interested can
see it here:

RESPONSE: The insinuation That portrait of Jesus that we find in the Churches
in Goa was based on both ignorance of the Portuguese as well as an attempt by
the European colonial powers to prove their superiority, is
malicious, contemptuous and baseless. Nowhere at the site provided is it stated
that Portugal has created the portraits of Jesus. The images, Idols and
portraits in Goa are mostly from Italy, and all over Europe similar portraits
and images exist. Bernardo Souza seems to have an axe to grind. But his
roundabout and directionless approach is futile.
