[Goanet] WIKIPEDIA: Anthony Mascarenhas (1928-1986)

Anthony Mascarenhas

>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neville Anthony Mascarenhas (10 July 1928 – 3 December 1986) was a
Pakistani journalist and author. His works include exposés on the brutality
of Pakistan's military during the 1971 independence movement of Bangladesh,
The Rape of Bangla Desh (1971) and Bangladesh: A Legacy of Blood (1986).[1]

Personal life[edit source]

Mascarenhas was born into a Goan Catholic family in Belgaum, and educated
in Karachi.[2] He and his wife Yvonne Mascarenhas together had five
children. He died in 1986.[3]

Career[edit source]

Mascarenhas was a journalist who was the assistant editor at The Morning
News (Karachi).[4] After collecting information on the atrocities committed
in Bangladesh, he realised he could not publish the story in Pakistan and
contacted Harold Evans of The Sunday Times. Before the publication of his
report in 1971, he moved his family to Britain.[5] Thereafter, he worked
for 14 years with The Sunday Times. Afterwards, he was a freelance writer.

In 1972, he was awarded the Granada's Gerald Barry Award for lifetime
achievement in journalism (ceremony on What The Papers Say), as well as the
International Publishing Company's Special Award for reporting on the human
rights violations committed during the Bangladesh Liberation War.[6] His
article "Genocide" in The Sunday Times on 13 June 1971 is credited with
having "exposed for the first time the scale of the Pakistan army's brutal
campaign to suppress its breakaway eastern province".[1]

The BBC writes: "There is little doubt that Mascarenhas' reportage played
its part in ending the war. It helped turn world opinion against Pakistan
and encouraged India to play a decisive role."[1] Indian Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi stating that Mascarenhas' article led her "to prepare the
ground for India's armed intervention".[1]

The Bangladeshi government honoured Mascarenhas's contribution to the
nation during the 1971 liberation war by preparing an official list of
names.[7]

[Goanet] WIKIPEDIA: Crab Curry (Goan)

2017-02-26 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Crab Curry (Goan)

>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Caril de caranguejo or crab curry.

Crab curry (Caril de caranguejo in Portuguese) is a typical Indo-Portuguese
dish from Goa, Daman and Diu, a region along the west coast of today's
India which was part of the Portuguese State of India (Estado da Índia). It
is also a typical dish from Mozambique, due to the significant population
of Goan origin that exists in that country.

As the name implies, it is a curry dish prepared with crab, which
traditionally has been found in abundance off the coast of Goa.

In addition to the crab, its ingredients include onion, tomato, piripiri (a
cultivar of Capsicum chinense, one of the sources of chili pepper that
grows both wild and domesticated), garlic, coconuts and spices which form a
yellow curry.

The coconuts are grated, to extract its milk. The crab can be either cut
into pieces or shredded. In the first case, it is common to be consumed by
hand, to facilitate the extraction of meat. In both cases, the previously
cooked crab is placed in a pan to boil with most of the ingredients. After
some time the coconut milk is added, boiling the dish for about 30 minutes
to rinse it.

It is usually served with white rice, which can be complemented with pickle
and papads (paparis).

[Goanet] WIKIPEDIA: Cabidela

Cabidela

>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pato de cabidela in Macau

Cabidela or arroz de cabidela (cabidela rice) is a Portuguese dish made
with poultry or rabbit cooked in its own blood added to water and a bit of
vinegar. The blood is captured when the animal is slaughtered. The rice is
cooked together with the meat or separately. The blood imparts a brown
color to the dish.

Variants[edit source]

Variations on the dish is also popular in many of Portugal's former
colonies. In Macau, a similar dish made with duck (pato de cabidela or pato
à cabidela) is one of the most famous dishes in Macanese cuisine.[1]

In Brazil, this dish is made exclusively with chicken (thus being called
galinha à cabidela or galinha de cabidela), and is considered a typical
dish of the city of Recife. It's also very common and a typical dish in the
state of Minas Gerais where it receives the name galinha ao molho pardo. It
is also common to cook only the chicken's blood, with vinegar and
vegetables, until it becomes a sauce that can be added to rice or to the
cooked chicken itself.

In India, pork cabidela is popular among the Goan Catholic community of Goa.

The chicken version is one of the most common dishes served on special
occasions or in restaurants in Angola.[2]

Collage bans students from citing WIKIPEDIA

I Came across this article on INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE, Published on
February, 22nd, 2007 and I wonder how true it is and I hope Fred our good
correspondent who mostly cites Wikipedia can tell if its true.:-)

After finding a significant number of errors in tests and research, the
history dept at Middlebury College in Vermont notified its students this
month that Wikipeidia could not be cited in papers or exams, and that
students could not "point to Wikipeidia or any similar source that may
appear in the future to escape the consequences of errors"

With the move, Middlebury, in Vermont, jumped into a growing debate within
journalism, the law and academia over what respect, if any, to give
Wikipedia articles, which are written by hundreds of volunteers and subject
to mistakes and sometimes deliberate falsehoods.

For details, photos and pricing check out:

 http://www.goa-world.com/expressions/valentines/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dabolim_Airport

Although the roads are fairly good, Dabolim airport is poorly
connected by public transport. Passengers usually use taxis
to reach the airport. Public buses, which tend to be
over-crowded, go to the nearby city of Vasco da Gama,
approximately 4 km (2 mi) away, and also stop at the closer
Chicalim bus stop, about 1.5 km (1 mi) from the airport.
Local mini-buses connect both Vasco da Gama and Chicalim to
the airport. Pre-paid taxis are available from the airport,
but these tend to be higher-priced than in the rest of India.
Charter groups (operators as well as tourists) are currently
facing the prospect of the former having to add to their
mini-coach fleets or the latter having to detour for a total
of two hours due to restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic on
the bridge on the river Zuari which has developed cracks. The
government is mulling the need for a second bridge. Meanwhile
plans for a 6-lane, north-south expressway are moving ahead
in Goa. A nonorail system is also being considered. All these
plans have implications for the proposed Mopa airport and its
link to Dabolim and Goa's population centres.
