I was invited to sing at this event on October 9, 2010. It was a great pleasure to share my song “GOA” which was written to celebrate World Goa Day; this day celebrates the recognition of Konkani as one of the official languages of India in1992. I recorded the CD single of the song “GOA” in order to be able to donate the profits from this song to the underprivileged children in Goa who do not have the opportunity to study music. Therefore, I was especially fascinated and pleased to see the important participation and contribution of the First Tanzanite Youth Committee to the event. The theme of the Tanzanite Dance celebrated “UMOJA”; this is the Swahili term that stands for “the spirit of togetherness”. I found this occasion very touching as it highlighted the main aspects of culture, family, and togetherness as a community including the need to be aware of the greater community and the importance of giving back to society. The Tanzanite Dance was a fundraiser to help the Msimbazi Orphanage in Dar-es-Salaam and to provide essential resources to a school. Funds were also raised to support the St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Zanzibar. I was happy to be a part of such a joyous, celebratory fund raising event where careful attention was given to every detail from the décor, food, music, costumes, UMOJA band performances and the exquisitely choreographed dances, which were performed by youth groups. Especially enjoyable to witness was the UMOJA Dance Group; the performance incorporated Tanzanian & Canadian influences. I would like to thank the Tanzanite Committee, especially Sheila D’souza, the social secretary & President, Myra Remedios, for inviting me to join in a most enjoyable evening. Bravo Canadian Tanzanite Goans of Toronto! www.jacintaluis.com =============== Reminiscing about the music I heard as I was growing up – by Jacinta Luis When I asked my father, Jerry Luis to talk about the band he co-founded with Banu Colaco, I was fascinated to learn that this was one of the earliest swing bands of Dar-es-Salaam and that so many wonderful musicians had the opportunity to play with the Jazz Swingers! Apparently, the band came to birth on December 31, 1947 due to unforeseen circumstances at the Goan Institute! So, this was the real deal called… improvisation! The Jazz Swingers became one of the most popular bands in Dar-es-salaam. Who does not remember dancing away to the sweet sounds of the Jazz Swingers from the mid-40’s until 1971?? Here is a list of some of the musicians who played in the Jazz Swingers over the years in Dar-es-salaam: Jimmy Fernandes & Lacy (Brandy) Caldeira,Tony Ferns, Neri Ferns, Paxy Colaco, Manu Rodrigues, Mathew Fernandes, Gil Vaz, Nelson Fernandes, Eddie DeSouza, Louis Pereira & Remy DeMello. The Jazz Swingers played at venues throughout Dar-es-salaam, including the Ocean Breeze, the Italian Club, the Greek Club and of course the Goan Institute, among others. I remember the sweet, swinging sounds of the Jazz Swingers when I was very little. Our home was always filled with musical life & energy – what a gift! My Dad, Jerry Luis continued to play the accordion when we arrived in Montreal, Canada in 1971. He was part of a band with Pat D’Cruz, Lino Viegas, Hilary Fernandes & Yorrick DeSouza. After he left Montreal for Toronto in 1983, he continued to play at various functions in Toronto, but concentrated most of his playing in the two choirs that my mother directs. Thanks to my Dad & to all those creative musicians whose path enriched my life with their beautiful music and thanks to Tanzania for providing such an exquisite, lovely country to grow up in. www.jacintaluis.com GLOBAL GOAN MUSICIANS : ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo rene barreto The spirit of togetherness ...
