Re: [Goanet] Galaxies, Faith and Science with Astronomer Dr Richard D'Souza SJ
He was "asking questions". But why do you not want him to "nervously laugh" but instead ask "hard (and interesting)" questions? Firstly, an interview reflects the style and persona of the interviewer. To run a successful podcast on Google is no mean achievement, I'd guess. Secondly, I myself know my ex-schoolmate (though much younger) Dr Richard himself; it is hard not to be overawed so completely by the intelligence, humility plus articulateness of a person like him. If achievements in scholarship could be compared with those from the world of beauty, for me meeting him and struggling to sound coherent while framing questions is something like meeting Reita Faria while dressed in short pants! Thirdly, on some subjects, especially those of a technical nature, all one wants to do is to listen. And hopefully not sound foolish while framing a question. A comparison with Al Jazeera (one of my favourite channels with Deutsche Welle) and the other global biggies is totally misplaced, I'd guess, considering the amount of resources, time, fact-checkers etc the latter have access to! Which podcast does? Even if on Google? Btw, check out the goa.me podcasts also on Google. Well, the title said Faith. Asking questions doesn’t imply being confrontational. Roland. I don't think every interview needs to be confrontational. It depends on the circumstances and topic. Re: [Goanet] Galaxies, Faith and Science with Astronomer Dr Richard D'Souza SJ
My interest was piqued by the title of the podcast in the context of an equally intriguing series aptly called “Go Beyond...” Also of interest was the interviewee. Here was a man of faith whose profession it was to believe in God while being a cosmologist. So it’s science on one side and faith on the other, residing in one person. The interview was totally disappointing because the interviewer failed in not bringing up what should have been the most interesting aspect of the conversation: how astronomer Richard D’Souza SJ reconciled his scientific temper with his scientifically unproven faith in god. Don’t get me wrong. The podcast was as interesting as one could reasonably expect if one were expecting it to be all about astronomy. Fr D’Souza was lucid and brought many worthwhile issues to the table: how scientists dive into their work, how galaxial mergers occur, why Andromeda acts like a giant scooping machine, clashing with and sometimes swallowing other galaxies, how puny and insignificant our life is and will end unceremoniously in a million or billion years who knows, but what should have been the crux of it all - how science and faith mix or don’t - was totally ignored. Not his fault I say again. The interviewer who seemed to nervously laugh often with no reason, was the one found wanting, not Richard. Most interviewers either avoid asking the hard (and interesting) questions or are prevented from doing so. Only Al Jazeera and the western media channels take on this kind of task head on. Roland.
