The service will probably start in the first or second week of April this year. Mary Fernandes, the nurse appointed by the Global Cancer Concern India, has already started counselling patients from March 7 at the GMC. (Herald) CURTAINS COME DOWN ON PONDA CINEMAS: There won't be anything funny about April Fool's day this year as five movie theatres will close down in Goa. Of these, three are in Ponda taluka. Cine Aishaa opened its doors to the public before 1961, but had to shut down after Liberation. On March 21, 1963, it reopened with a total seating capacity of 610 seats. It shows four movies a day and is run by Noor Shaikh with a staff of 12. Theatres which have applied for a shutdown from April 1 are at Marcel, Pernem and Ponda while those at Sanquelim and Tisk-Usgao will be attached by the bank. The result of this move is that POnda will not have a single theatre. Said Cine Aishaa owner Noor Sheikh: "Today, the only customers I get are labourers, while the wealthier people go to Inox. The BJP government had promised government funds to upgrade theatres all over Goa, but it was an IIT-lie by our IIT chief minister.... Another reason for closing down is that Anna (politician-theatre owner king Harish Zantye) no longer gets the peti (film-reels) from Mumbai, as all his theatres have satellite dishes which cost Rs 15 lakh and movies are telecast directly from Mumbai via satellite...."
