While the highway runs on level ground from Verna and stability does not seem to be much of a problem for most of the stretch, run offs from mud embankment at elevated spots, specially at Dabolim and Vasco, are leading to the destabilization of the soil in the wake of light to moderate showers during the past few days. (GT) WOMAN MURDERED: The body of an unidentified woman, with sharp injuries on her neck, was found lying in a ditch at Dotorbhatt, Old Goa. A knife suspected to be used in the crime was found a few metres away. The body was lightly decomposed and the police suspect that she was killed about two days ago. (GT) GIRL COMMITS SUICIDE: A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Sirvodem-Navelim on June 1 evening. (H) LINESMAN ELECTROCUTED: Ankush S Agarwadekar, a 45-year-old linesman attached to the Electricity department in Mapusa, died of electrocution in the wee hours of June 1. While he was checking the fuse box on an electricity pole, he accidentally came in contact with a live wire and fell to the ground. (H) RAINS LIKELY TO HIT GOA: The conditions have become favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over southern parts of Konkan and Goa coast and some more parts of the peninsular India in the next two to three days, Indian Meteorological department said on June 1 in Pune. (H) MAJOR THREATS TO INDIA: The president of the Centre for Policy Research, Dr VA Pai Panandikar, said that the gravity of external threat to India is not as much as the internal threat faced by her, specially resulting out of poverty and lawlessness. Addressing an interactive session on the topic 'Elections 2004: The Prospects for the Economy and the Polity', organised by the Goa International Centre and Forum for Good Governance, on June 1, he said that Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with their combined population of 250 million people, are the failed states. Dr Panandikar also said that the global economy is highly favourable for India. The BJP led National Democratic Alliance government went down because of BJP's own disadvantage like 'India Shining' campaign, rather than the 'Sonia' advantage for the party, he mentioned. (NT) EDUARDO DENIES SEEKING BERTH IN UNION CABINET: Rajya Sabha member and former Union minister, Mr Eduardo Faleiro, categorically denied that he had ever lobbied for any place in the Union cabinet. He expressed surprise at reports appearing in a section of the press that he has been lobbying for a cabinet berth. (NT) CANADA-BASED GOAN ASSOCIATION POSTS RECORD PROFIT: The Goan Overseas Association, one of the oldest South Asian organisations in Ontario, posted another record profit for 2003. Presenting its annual report at the recently held annual general meeting, the GOA showed consolidated earned revenue of $66,294.The bulk of the profit came from hosting the Viva Goa show, an annual cultural event that drew in more than 4,000 people at Downsview Hangar last year. (Eugene Correia in Herald) FASHION DESIGNING: The Government Polytechnic, Panjim, will commence a six-month free 'Fashion Designing' course for economically backward rural unemployed youth. The classes will be held daily from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. Candidates should appear for interview on June 16, at 10 am. (H) APOLLO VICTOR HOSPITAL: In his address after formally inaugurating the super specialty hospital Apollo Victor Hospital at Malbhat on June 1, at the hands of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Dr Suresh Amonkar, Health Minister, assured the promoters that the government in no way will hamper the functioning of the hospital set up at the cost of Rs.28 crore. (GT) TALK ON MYTHS: Fundacao Oriente has organised a talk on myths and its interpretation in visual arts by Dr Deepak Kannal on 5 and 6 June at the Fundacao Oriente Gallery from 10 am to 5 pm. Dr Kannal will speak on myths, mythification and mythology, political mythology, a case of Bhaja and Mandhata caves, myths and metaphor, Indian mythology and contemporary art. (GT) FROG MEAT CAN CAUSE CANCER! With least concern for the environment, frog meat is treated as a delicacy and even some restaurants offer it to their regular customers (though you will not see it on the menu card)...According to the Forest department, massive toxic recalcitrant residues from agro-chemicals biomagnified in the food chain which gets accumulated in the fat deposits of frogs can trigger paralytic strokes, cancers, kidney failures and other deformities on consumption of frogs over a period of time. (H) MERCES SPRING: Merces spring, situated at the far end of the village just below the block housing military camp at Bambolim, is one spring which seems to have been lost to residents. The spring is known to have contained rich medicinal properties. People from Merces and parts of St Cruz, Bambolim, Chimbel and Curca, flocked here to bathe in the spring water. But everything came to a standstill when it came to light that the spring water was contaminated. (Bindiya Chari in Herald) MAID SERVANT HELD: A 20-year-old maid servant, Geeta Khot hailing from Miraj, was remanded to one-day police custody for stealing cash amounting to Rs.5,500 and a wrist watch. She also attempted to rob a Santro car belonging to her employer, Mr Shyam Kamat from Altinho, Panaji. Geeta was serving the Kamat family for quite some time. (NT) COMPOST PLANT AT CURCA: The Corporation of the City of Panaji is contemplating on setting up a compost generation plant at its garbage dump site at Curca. This was disclosed by Commissioner of the CCP, Sanjit Rodrigues, during a press briefing. (H) GF TO TACKLE MARGAO GARBAGE PROBLEM: Margao Municipal Council, which has been facing a major problem to dispose off the city garbage, seems to have found a good samaritan in Goa Foundation, who has offered to tackle the same. (GT) GKA'S NEW OFFICE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will inaugurate on June 5, the new office premises of the Goa Konkani Akademi, at 243, Patto Colony, in Panjim, at 10.30 am. A reception programme upto 5.30 pm will follow this function. From June 3, the Akademi's Borim office will be closed for the public. (H) CHINCHINIM, SWAYING PALMS AND LOVELY FIELDS: Nine kilometres from the busy commercial hub of Margao town lies the village of Chinchinim, with dense foliage and swaying palms. It is a welcome respite from the pollution of Margao. The broad and smooth roads of Chinchinim matching the plush patterned houses, constructed on the pale sandbed here, attract visitors. The paddy fields, spread in patches and once used for cultivating sweet potatoes too add as a coolant to many, who now prefer settling down in Chinchinim. The villagers are mostly employed on ships and have contributed to the village socio-economic development. In a population of around 6000, the village has nearly 30 per cent of people as seamen and in the Gulf. (H) GOAN YOUTH TOPS AT IIT EXAM: Even before he could know his final year results, Louis Xavier D'Costa (20) has secured for himself a seat at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). At the very first joint Admission Test conducted by eight institutes in the country, Louis has been ranked first among 54 competitors. Louis, who completed SSC in Kuwait, came to Goa and did his higher Secondary at Fr Agnel Ashram at Verna. As he could not secure admission to the engineering college, he pursued BSc in Geology. Son of Inacio and Etilicia, he will be the first Goan to top the rank in the first ever Joint Test for Admission to IIT.
