Demystifying Local Politics Down Under: A Young Goan Councillor's Journey https://youtu.be/jv6omwIvGls?si=wV7ibR8hzlvEuM1m
Karen (D'Souza) Wright is an elected Councillor of her Local Government Area (LGA), like a Municipal Council in Goa. Tracing her family roots to Goa (Saligao) and Kenya, where her parents grew up, she is the youngest, first woman, first multi-ethnic (Indian, Goan, immigrant, coloured) councillors in the nine who form her council. During the 2021 (pandemic-midst) elections she contested, Karen got the second highest number of votes, among 20+ candidates in the fray. She has been involved in public interest work, even before her election. A brieFNcounter with her during her visit to Goa during her grandmum's 97th birthday. She is the daughter of the late Mariano D'Souza (Cruzvaddo, Saligao) and Gina (ex-Kenya). This is how her webpage describes her: "Karen Wright has lived in the Bega Valley for most of her life. She is a single mother of two boys and lives in South Pambula. Karen was elected as the youngest member of Council in 2021. Karen is a mental health advocate and is the South-East NSW Regional Coordinator at Standby Support After Suicide. She has been actively involved in a number of community organisations and groups over the years including OzHarvest and the Bega Valley Suicide Prevention Action Network (SPAN). Karen has also been President of Pambula Community Garden and a board member of Sapphire Community Pantry. She currently sits as a Councillor representative on the board of South East Arts -- FN * +91-9822122436 * 784 Saligao 403511 Bardez Goa *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Join a discussion on Goa-related issues by posting your comments on this or other issues via email to goa...@goanet.org See archives at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
