[google-appengine] Sudden increase of queries response time around [25/Oct/2012:16:09:37 -0700] ?

2012-10-26 Thread Olivier Truemat
Hi,

Our datastore queries have an average response time of around 300 ms.

During the following period : [25/Oct/2012:16:06:59 -0700] until
[25/Oct/2012:16:15:12
-0700] we have seen that the same datastore queries went up to 99000 ms.
This led to queries throwing exceptions due to deadline exceeded exception.

Has someone encountered the same issue ?

The appid is : francecorentstudents

Thanks,

Olivier

[google-appengine] Re: How to get major appengine issues fixed?

2012-10-26 Thread Bob Dohnal
The issue comes when the PageSpeed service is enabled.

On Thursday, October 25, 2012 9:50:16 AM UTC+2, Jan Killian wrote:

 Hi fellow appengine developers,

we have a major impact issue on an european bank application, which is
their first Google Apps and Google Cloud experience. We'd need this to be
addressed to keep the trust that Google can provide the service. Is there
any option to get such a major issues fixed in a reasonable time?
Preferably other than paying for a premier account, which is not needed for
this pilot product at this time.

The issue was already reported on appengine public issue tracker for over
 a month: http://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=7979

App Engine returns 403 on http://customdomain, instead of redirecting it
to https, when secure:always is set in app.yaml. Authentication for the
application is set to Google Apps domain, which may (or may not) play role
 in triggering the issue.

 http://appid.appspot.com redirects correctly to https://appid.appspot.com
 http://customdomain - returns 403
 https://customdomain - works

Thanks for a very good and beautifully designed service otherwise
 Jan

normally I've been very supportive of google and GAE as a platform.
and things do happen, just look at amazon east's issues earlier this week.

but so far I'm not very pleased with the lack of info/update from

amazon was very quick to provide update including what's wrong, what's
being fixed.

so far as a customer, what I hear from google is oh yea, we know it's
down. stay tuned

Re: [google-appengine] Re: Sudden 502 errors on 100% of the requests for no reason. Our app is down.

2012-10-26 Thread Jon Stevens
According to pingdom, my app has been going up and down for the last hour.
I really appreciate Google's hard work on getting this issue resolved as
quickly as possible and this makes me really appreciate not running my own
servers ( someone else's problem now! =) ). Having a bit more information
on things would be nice, but at this point, I'd rather just have them focus
on getting things stable again and look forward to the postmortem report.

best,

jon

Mine GAE instance is down too. I noticed its started last night Oct 25th
(approx close to midnight EST).

I started migration of my datastore from M/S to HRD. After it did
finishmigration, I started noticing that I cannot access GAE admin console
and my apps.

Perhaps GAE having issues with HRD infrastructure - how ironic! it was
supposed to be better than M/S!!! Will Google offer any refund or free
coupons/promotion codes for the down time?

The account they say is wrong is the one I have been using for several

RE: [google-appengine] Why is code.google.com/status/appengine hosted on the same infrastructure it reports on?

2012-10-26 Thread Drake
This has gone around before. Down time only counts if your server is down
when the reporting is up.

We call this differential down time.

If everyone is down then your down time doesn't count because the media will
already be reporting the mass outage and so people won't expect you to be
up. Amazon pioneered this model and finds it very cost effective.

The shared IP pool is a significant problem with URLFetch, and you
really need to be careful when using it. The standard workaround is
to set up your own proxy servers elsewhere on the net - a PITA but not
optional for many services. Here's the issue to star to hopefully get
Google to do something about the issue:

FWIW, I've also found that URLFetch is occasionally less than snappy.
But there are a lot of moving parts involved so it's hard to figure
out exactly where to lay blame.

One thing to watch out for is that the default URLFetch timeout is
fairly short. I usually find it necessary to increase the timeout,
especially with services with erratic performance (eg Facebook).

Re: [google-appengine] Reliability of URLFetchService

2012-10-26 Thread Deepak Singh
So either i use URLFetch / URLFetchAsync feature OR i make a connection
through HttpUrlConnection and getInputStream, both are same ?

I mean behind the scene, they are working as same object.
So when URLFetch fails, it means HttpUrlConnection also fails ?

Regards
Deepak

Translated: URLFetch is rock-solid, except because it uses a shared
IP pool it will erratically fail if you use it to fetch from almost
any third-party service that pays attention to load. Which really
  isn't very rock-solid at all.

The shared IP pool is a significant problem with URLFetch, and you
really need to be careful when using it. The standard workaround is
to set up your own proxy servers elsewhere on the net - a PITA but not
optional for many services. Here's the issue to star to hopefully get
Google to do something about the issue:

  http://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=6644

FWIW, I've also found that URLFetch is occasionally less than snappy.
But there are a lot of moving parts involved so it's hard to figure
out exactly where to lay blame.

One thing to watch out for is that the default URLFetch timeout is
fairly short. I usually find it necessary to increase the timeout,
especially with services with erratic performance (eg Facebook).

In my experience, the reliability of URLFetch is rock-solid. The
 problem
   is
the external server that you're connecting to. The external server can
   be
relatively fast to respond (many web APIs, such as Google's goo.gl
   shortener
and so forth) or relatively slow and error-prone (the Reddit API in
particular is just absolutely terrible to access from AppEngine; since
   all
GAE urlfetches come from the same pool of IPs, the Reddit servers
deliberately throttle requests because they think all of the requests
   are
coming from a single poorly-behaved app, not multiple apps. And no,
 the
reddit api does not offer oauth or similar authentication).

There's a couple of ways to mitigate this; you can use task queues to
   keep
retrying a urlfetch, backends to continuously urlfetch and cache the
results, find a different 3rd party service, etc.

   Hi Alll,

I want to discuss here your experience about GAE Java
 URLFetchService.

We are using async feature of this service to retrieve data from 3rd
   party
servers and our business mainly depends on the data received from
 their
   servers.
I observe that UrlFetch fails many times with java.io exception and
   thus
   we lose our business.

So i would like to know your experience about its reliability,
DeadlineExceededException cases, ways to handle it and all.

Let us know how reliable is URLFetchService(GAE Java) ?

Correct. It doesn't matter how you write your networking code or which
classes you use; internally, AppEngine relies on URLFetch for *everything*.
The only alternative is to sign up for the Sockets Trusted Tester program
that was recently announced.

[google-appengine] Good feedback for today

2012-10-26 Thread trilok
Hi,

As someone who in past spoke against GAE specifically in regards to the
information received during downtime, i gotta say: What an improvement!

The hourly updated forum and answers in this group are a great leap forward
compared to the silence we had in the past during downtimes.

Great job Google (IMHO)!

The account they say is wrong is the one I have been using for several
months. Has something changed, or is this a symptom of today's outage?
