I'm seeing some intermittent latency issues - some requests are taking many
seconds.

No code changes in a while. I don't see anything on the cloud status
dashboard. I'm in us-central on a legacy Python 2.7 app. My users /
employees all over the country have commented that they're experiencing
very slow page loads.

[google-appengine] Re: Updates from the Google App Engine team (Fall 2021)

2021-11-08 Thread Will Reiher
Hi,

Thanks for the follow up. The articles detail the process fine if the
underlying blobs are "on" cloud storage. In my case I'm talking about
legacy blobs stored outside of the my visible buckets. They're not
represented in cloud storage and the python 3 runtime does not seem to have
a way to access them from what would be the remaining blobkey references.
>From my understanding my legacy blobs would not have a corresponding
"gs_object_name" that would facilitate me accessing them. That is also very
much moot on the new runtime since it doesn't provide the BlobInfo api
where I would be able to access the gs_object_name property.

I have a feeling the new "appengine-python-standard" library will provide a
partial answer as it looks like it will expose some of the old Blobstore
APIs that I would need to continue to access legacy blobs that are not
listed in an assessable bucket.

The new library still seems to be missing the BlobstoreDownloadHandler that
would allow the end user to be redirected to download the file. This
basically set a header and the platform would deliver the blob to the
client.

[google-appengine] Re: Updates from the Google App Engine team (Fall 2021)

2021-11-08 Thread Will Reiher
I'm slowly moving my way towards a migration path to the new Python 3
runtime. 2022 is the year. I've been a AppEngine customer since 2009 - so
I've already seen my share of smaller migrations as the oldest of the
services died off.

I currently have a question about Blobstore. As I'm planning to decouple
services in preparation for the first of many migrations I'm wondering
about all my old blobs. All my new blobstore files, as of summer of last
year, are in the default cloud storage bucket and I'm keeping track of the
"gs_object_name"
so that they'll continue to be easy to work with as I migrate which is nice.

The real question is after I move my apps to the Python3 runtime how will I
access my legacy blobs? I see that cloud NDB "supports" blobkeys and I
currently I'd use "blobstore_handlers.BlobstoreDownloadHandler" and
"send_blob" to allow my users to download their files. I literally have a
decade of stored blobkeys that I would like to be able to service after I
move to the new runtime. I see that "send_bob" puts the blobkey in a header
which I assume is picked up by the platform to deliver the file to the end
user. Please point me in the right direction if you can!

Totally, not a huge amount of them but definitely more RPC errors and
timeouts in the last week or so. I'd expect the odd one but it would seem
that some infrastructure changes are causing issues.

Seems to be resolving itself now. Many thanks to the App Engine team
(especially the ones who read those feedback forms). I was worried that
you'd deployed 5400 RPM drives to fix the SSD issues from the other day.

[google-appengine] Extremely high latency in us-central 10 second plus on static files too

2021-06-24 Thread Will Reiher
Just wanted to give people the heads up.

I'm testing a minor update to my app and when viewing my staged version I'm
seeing super high latency numbers that I've never experienced before.
Static files are 10+ seconds and some dynamic handlers are over 90 seconds.

None of the code changes are to blame - super minor and more so I can't
slow down static handlers. I did see a couple of warmup requests indicate
server errors but I can't see those in my logs.

[google-appengine] Re: Cloud Tasks UI no longer accessible from python2.7 standard?

2020-10-08 Thread Will Reiher
I took the plunge and "enabled" the API on my legacy app. For anyone facing
the same dilemma it didn't have any negative effects and my queues were all
present and pending tasks were still queued up. I still had to use the
button from App Engine to see them though.

[google-appengine] Re: Not able to run dev_appserver with Python 3 only environment

2020-10-08 Thread Will Reiher
dev_appserver.py requires python 2. You actually run it with python2 and it
will spawn a python 3 process to handle your python3 app. This allows it to
support app engine services that use different languages.

Re: [google-appengine] Uploads to Legacy Blobstore are Failing with 500, nothing in the logs

2020-10-08 Thread Will Reiher
I don't remember what the error code was anymore. I just knew that
something was f'd. It was really a hunch that that new bucket was involved
and that if my app didn't have permission it might be the answer. I was
prepared for a very long day but after the permission change it all just
started working again - with the blobs showing up in that new bucket.

Most of my stuff is using Cloud Storage except for user uploads. I'm
working to replace that with a UUID based storage name so that I can
maintain the ability to allow for same-named files to be uploaded.

Of course today Cloud Task UI is not available and it wants me to enable
the API (I've been using it for months now) Nervous that my queues will be
erased if I enable it.

[google-appengine] Cloud Tasks UI no longer accessible from python2.7 standard?

2020-10-08 Thread Will Reiher
When to check on my queues this morning only to find that I had to enable
the API. I've been using the Cloud Tasks UI for a while now. I'm nervous
that if I enable the API my existing queues will be reset or something.

My app doesn't seem to be complaining - I rely heavily on the taskqueue so
I'm a bit worried about what could happen.

Re: [google-appengine] Uploads to Legacy Blobstore are Failing with 500, nothing in the logs

2020-10-08 Thread Will Reiher
I had an issue a few weeks back. It was due to my transition to gcloud
deploy. It created a new app-id.appspot.com bucket but my app engine
service account did not have permissions. Once I gave it permission it
started working again with the blobstore items showing up in the new
"default" bucket.

My app is still on Python 2.7 and uses the legacy blobstore.

I use blobstore.create_upload_url('/upload’) to populate a form. This
has been working fine for several years.

The last successful one was: 02/Oct/2020:11:37:23 -0400

As of this morning, attempts to upload to the blobstore are resulting
in error 500 and I don’t see the request in my logs.

I simulated one of these uploads using curl, but that produced no

2020-07-17 Thread Will Reiher
*Note for anyone looking. *This seems to be a Chrome Bug that affects *Chrome
for Mac* and from the sounds of it Google is pushing some silent fixes as I
am typing this. It's blocking content based on the extension and mime-type
whereas it should be also considering the use of http:// and https:// on
delivery. Not an app engine issue - thankfully. The blobstore is a bit of a
blackhole now.

[google-appengine] Chrome Safe Browsing Blocking Downloads from App Engine Blobstore

2020-07-17 Thread Will Reiher
I am having issues with the newest version of Chrome. It's blocking
downloads of PDF, and docx files from our site. Internally I can whitelist
using chrome management but I can't do that for our customers who will need
to download these types of files.

Is there something that I can fix? Im serving everything from HTTPS and
there is no mixed content on the site. I'm using the send_blob() method
provided by the blobstore_handlers.BlobstoreDownloadHandler.

Thanks - solved my own problem. It was the user-agent being re-written not
the host as I suspected.

[google-appengine] AppEngine Standard urlfetch Host header

2020-03-02 Thread Will Reiher
Hello App Engine team or anyone that might know - I'm running into a bit of
a wall. I need to update to a new AWS API that now requires the host header
to have specific content which is part of an HMAC signed request.

In my case it's "host: webservices.amazon.com" when I'm making requests
to https://webservices.amazon.com/paapi5/.

I wired everything up but - as you know - urlfetch kills/replaces the host
header. I can't tell what it's replacing it with and I'm not sure if there
is work around. I can't leave it off but perhaps if I knew what it was
putting in the header as a replacement I would be able to match the
signature. As it stands now my requests are not valid.

[google-appengine] Re: App Engine - Inbound Mail Issues/Delays?

2017-02-17 Thread Will Reiher
Alex,

My issue is still not fully resolved today - I've had a couple instances
today of delayed delivery.
It's not related to the API it's that mail being sent to the inbound
@appspotmail address is being delayed before showing up on /_ah/mail and
hitting my request handler.

I've triple confirmed that there is no delay from the source but it's
definitely not getting to my app as quickly as it should. I have logs
showing when the mail that was "delayed" finally hits my handler I get a
ton of requests all at once (which is not the way it would have been sent).
It seems to be an infrastructure issue.

[google-appengine] Re: App Engine - Inbound Mail Issues/Delays?

2017-02-16 Thread Will Reiher
One more update - I emailed manually from my Google App's account and the
request handler was fired. The other emails are also being sent (I've cc'd
myself from the source). Is there a chance that a filter or some other flag
is causing a delay in processing. This is fairly critical for some of our
business processes.

I just want to add that I have confirmed that mail is being sent to the
in-bound address but our handler is not getting hits. We've not noticed too
much of this happening in the past but it's impossible to bug fix since the
issue is happening outside of my app. Any assistance or information about
this outage would be appreciated.

It seems to be related to a cached ssl certificate on google cloud but I

[google-appengine] Search API Usage off the chart! Like 100K off the chart.

2014-06-25 Thread Will Reiher
I almost had a heart attack looking at my dashboard. My max budget is
$20/day but the dashboard is saying that I have used over $100K of Simple
Searches.
I'm guessing it's a bug because I don't get that kind of traffic ever and
my budget is not exceeded.

Would love to get some clarity from the app engine team.

Activate billing through the App Engine console. Log into the console (
appspot.com ), and click the link marked Billing Status on the left
 navigation bar.

[google-appengine] Blobstore Downloads using IE seeing errors connecting to appspot

2011-12-21 Thread Will Reiher
I've heard some support issues come up when some of our customers have
tried to download a file from the blobstore using Internet Explorer and get
an error. The download dialog comes up and everything seems to be acting
property but when the download begins they see some type of cannot connect
to *appspot.com error. Has anyone else seen this and more importantly is
there a work around?

We all work in firefox or chrome browsers and have never seen this issue.

[google-appengine] Re: Crazy number of Deadine Exceeded exceptions recently

2011-08-03 Thread Will Reiher
To further my original comment... While it seems to be back to an almost
normal state when it was really bad I was getting DeadlineExceeded errors on
Warm ups and other otherwise trivial requests. Most of my issues were not
related to any offline task work - in fact for the most part tasks seemed to
be the most stable.

As I said originally this included deployments that had been stable for 30+
days and were all of a sudden throwing way more Deadline exceptions.

Ikai,

That's great news! I'm not so worried about a temporary read-only period
it's the the idea of switching the application id that was scary. I've
already done it once, and while it was fairly painless, it did affect our
https requests point to the app-id appspot url.

Thanks for the update - I'm sure many other people will be making the
switch.

[google-appengine] Crazy number of Deadine Exceeded exceptions recently

2011-08-01 Thread Will Reiher
I'm trying to debug this issue but I keep hitting a wall.

I keep trying new things on one of my deployments to see if I an get the
number of errors down but nothing seems to help. It all started in the last
week or so ago. I also have some existing deployments that I have not
changed and are seeing these same errors while the code was never changed
and had been stable.

1. This is is happening on existing code that has not changed recently
2. The DeadlineExceededErrors are coming up randomly and at different points
in the code.
3. Latency is pretty high and app engine seems to be spawning a lot of new
instances beyond my 3 included ones.
