+1 for Pycharm. I have used Pydev, but I change because some features:

 1) Refactoring is easier
 2) better autcompletion, including jinja templates, JS and CSS
 3) Building of less file out of the box
 4) Git integration far better than Eclipse's Egit

 Kaan:

Anyone has their preferences and all you pointed out is great but the
color scheme. You have 3 preset groups of schemes and you can totaly
create a new one to meet your needs.

I use Aptana Studio (which is just a dressed up version of Eclipse)
primarily and Sublime Text sometimes. Eclipse has been such a core part of
my workflow for over a decade that I always miss things about it when I try
to use other IDEs. I've been trying to switch away from it for a while but
have not succeeded. To me one of the core features of an IDE for GAE (and
anything actually) is full graphical debug support so even when I use
Sublime I run my app through Aptana for the good debugger in PyDev.

To those that use Sublime: what debugger do you guys use?

[google-appengine] Re: What is the most common IDE for GAE/Python?

2013-04-29 Thread Kaan Soral
I'm using Netbeans, many bugs, but great editor, got used to colors etc too
much, can't leave it for other ide's

I tried PyCharm but hated the colorschemes, tried additional ones, hated
them more, python functionality wasn't too appealing either, It's a great
IDE to casually open a folder to edit, my 'test project' is on PyCharm

Didn't try Sublime 2 for Python/Appengine but it would be my next choice. I
was unable to use an Eclipse/PHP environment that my friends set up for
their project, but after switching to Sublime 2 I was able to contribute to
the project. Sublime 2 was a breeze for an Eclipse hater like me.

What I like about Netbeans is that, although the python functionality is
highly buggy, you can search inside all files pretty easily, so that makes
up for the lack of python functionality, also the syntax correction is
solid, HTML syntax isn't Django friendly.

So to sum up, I'm hooked to Netbeans but don't get used to Netbeans.
PyCharm might be an IDE to get used to for Appengine/Python, as they
specifically work on python/django/jinja2/appengine usage and always
improve (the updates say so, not me)

2013-04-29 Thread Helge Tesdal
I use Sublime 2, with packages like Flake8, CodeIntel, SublimeRope. Works
great for me. Several colleagues are using PyCharm, which I have to admit
looks pretty smooth, especially if you spend a few minutes to set it up (if
it's virtualenv vs buildout etc, get paths and test setup right) and take
the effort to use sphinx compatible docstrings.

2013-04-29 Thread Jason Elbourne
In my opinion, Sublime 2 seems to be the professional's choice right now
for IDE. You can really customize / hack it to fit your coding style and It
has great plug-ins available.

Definitely worth looking at. There are great video on youtube teaching you
the tips and trick of sublime 2.

I used to use TextMate which is very popular and I loved it but sublime is
my new best friend, it speeds up coding a ton.

also for reference 90% of my coding is on GAE with python and I code
everyday with sublime 2.

Hmm, this question is a bit like what is your favourite icecream. I don't
use either, but I doubt what I use is popular ;-)

I prefer Boa Constructor and Ninja IDE, but there are heaps of others I
would use before Eclipse.
