I would guess either DNS errors or some type of proxy issue too. Are you able to use urllib to grab the content from a website? What happens if you fire up an interactive session and try: import socket socket.gethostbyname('appengine.google.com') Are you able to try this from some other network connection? I got this error every time I use appcfg doing updating, dowloading, ...
