That's correct, I'm using AppEngine to run a service registry that proxies to other services. I would like to differentiate between services that are unavailable and services that are not responding fast enough.
I've also noticed that if the service I'm calling from GAE is down, I get an IOException, instead of a 404 in the response... which is what I would get if I were calling the service from the browser.
