I'm pretty sure state and province are synonymous. Just convention
that in the USA they're called states and Canada they're called
provinces.

I'm hailing from London Ontario! Good to see other Canadians. And to the
Brasilian that called Ontario a State, we are not part of the United States.
We call what Ontario is a 'province'.
