I've gone through the same effort to get this working using Google Guice based on some pointers provided by Thomas Broyer in another discussion. It works quite well and could be reused easily across applications. I've even done some integration with the JDO API to get this working in GAE (not without a good amount of trial and error). I'll be posting detailed instructions on my blog and committing some code to github that people can reuse easily. Unless there is a better place for it in which case I'd be glad to contribute the code there as well. Suggestions?
