The purpose of the exercise is to stimulate student discussion about the expanding role of personalized medicine in society. By analyzing relatively non-controversial genetic variables, students may discover that they would benefit from consuming more leafy green vegetables, avoiding dairy products, or limiting alcohol intake. The voluntary, confidential test is believed to be the first mass genetic testing by a university. Some scientists object to any type of genetic testing that is not accompanied by counseling. PLANNING In Canada, the city of Edmonton is [ http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/City+leads+Second+Life+virtual+w orld/3008009/story.html ] using the virtual world of Second Life to engage its citizens in the urban planning and economic development process. The city will recreate itself online, importing buildings, geography, terrain, and landmarks. Proposed projects, such as a downtown arena, can be more realistically visualized by visitors to the city s online world, which officials hope will help stimulate and inform urban planning discussions. The virtual Edmonton will also provide potential tourists with a more engaging way to see what the city has to offer. While other cities have a Second Life presence, Edmonton may be the first city to begin to replicate all of its environs online. Students learn construction skills while helping low-income homeowners make green repairs to pre-1976 mobile homes, or replace them entirely. Funded through the Housing Authority and the federal Pathways Out of Poverty program, workers will receive nine months of skills training to prepare them for this win-win initiative. Officials hope to begin construction on the first home in July. URBAN DEVELOPMENT = Across the nation, [ http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-05-05-urban-parks_N.htm ] cities are capping highways, covering them with green space and rerouting traffic away from the city, in an effort to revive sections of their downtowns. Both environmentalists and developers support the plans, as they provide more green space and opportunities to build. Citizens appreciate the pedestrian-friendly parks and amenities that this capping creates. Boston has capped part of its freeways by diverting them during the Big Dig. Cincinnati has consolidated several exits on one of its thoroughfares to open up over 50 acres. Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and St. Louis are studying similar proposals. Africa has the world's fastest-growing mobile communications market with 350 million mobile phone subscriptions. Yet, only one in five households has access to financial services. New mobile-enabled services could push the frontiers of financial inclusion and be a win for the region's development agenda.
