Thanks for the explanation. Sounds similar to what r.clump does. Would it
be an idea to add your explanation to the help file, for the next one that
stumbles upon it?

All pixel that are connected (either 4 or 8 cell neighborhoods) are defined
as one patch (with unique ID) and used in subsequent functions like
