Re: [GRASS-PSC] [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Budget 2023

2023-01-21 Thread Moritz Lennert
Hi !

Just a heads-up/ reminder to avoid any possible misunderstanding : the fact
that we put in a budget request to OSGeo and that it is approved does not mean
that we automatically get the money. The PSC has to make an explicit request to
the board at the moment the money needs to be spent. In other words, what OSGeo
grants us is a _pledge_ that money is available for us up to the maximum amount
requested, if we have actual spending.

As a concrete example: if we want part of the student grants to be paid with
money from the OSGeo budget, we have to ask Michael to pay it out directly to
the students from the OSGeo account.

I was checking recent years and there was nothing in the Code Sprints
table, so I did as in 2019 and put a note "(included in project request

2023-01-20 Thread Vaclav Petras
Thanks Vero. Keeping focus on the 40th bday sprint and using the existing
grant program makes sense as well as the numbers for the sprint - as far as
I understood what OSGeo asks for, we need to seek sponsorship for it anyway.

2023-01-20 Thread Veronica Andreo
Hi all,

I'd try to get into the Google Summer of Docs first. If that doesn't work,
we can assign one of the 2 budgeted student grants to documentation tasks.

Since the budget presentation deadline is today, I will complete the OSGeo
table (https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Budget_2023) asking for 5000 usd
mainly for GRASS GIS 40th bday community sprint and student grants. See the
details at: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_GIS_Budget_2023 and
https://grasswiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_GIS_Budget_2023.

Thanks to Vero we have a new Wiki page
(https://grasswiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_GIS_Budget_2023) and also the
related ODS file updated in our PSC nextcloud.osgeo.org account.

Concerning the budget, I would like to bring forward the following idea:

Weblate (our translation tool,
https://weblate.osgeo.org/projects/grass-gis/) offers a plugin for
machine translation, e.g. using DeepL.
Given the amount of untranslated messages I'd suggest that we give it
a try. Certainly, these messages need to be validated but I can image
that the speed is way higher than doing it all manually.

Proposal: identify a small sub-budget to play around with machine
translations in Weblate, using one of the related machine translation
APIs (https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/admin/machine.html).

Best,
Markus
