In accordance with the decisions of our January meet in Dhaka, we have been going ahead with necessary preparatory work at different levels. [GreenYouth] Participants from South Asia meet in WSF Dakar
MAIL FROM SASF SECRETARIAT Dear Fellows in SASF, Greetings and wishes from SASF Secretariat.. We had a very enthusiastic meeting of the South Asian Participants in WSF-Dakar on 10 February, 2011 morning in one of the restaurants of WSF main venue. Participants from Nepal, India, Bangladesh and observers from Malaysia and Finland were there. The meeting decided to discuss only one agenda : South Asia Social Forum to be held in Dhaka from 18-21 November, 2011. Representatives from Bangladesh submitted a brief verbal report about the progress es since the Dhaka SASF preparatory process meeting held on 20-21 January, 2011. This includes the formation of committees (Program, Finance, Mobilization and Media-Communication) and the initial activities of certain committees. .The SASF meeting in Dakar opined that given the preparatory time-space being too short and challenging, the whole potentials in South Asia will have to be harnessed efficiently. The finalization of venue and budgeting, updating of website, communication and dissemination processes will have to be done at the earliest. Raising of fund and developing credible financial system at the soonest were earmarked prominently. The experience and learning from the global and regional social forums held in South Asia will have to be utilized in Dhaka SASF preparatory caravan. The meeting observed that the successful holding of SASF in Dhaka will revitalize the forum processes in the region as a whole. Representatives from Afghanistan, Myanmar and South East Asia should have to be invited. The meeting supported the idea of holding a SASF preparatory meet encompassing participants from the whole South Asia in June( preferably 24-25 June), 2011 in Dhaka in order to have the threadbare discussions and pertinent decisions on the preparatory progress. On 20-21 January,2011 we met in Chayanot Seminar Room in Dhaka for one and half days to arrive at a great decision of holding our well awaited South Asia Social Forum SASF in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 18-21 November, 2011. The count-down has already started and we all relevant in South Asia will have to jump into the preparatory business with all our potential strength and commitment without any delay. We have formed 4 committees comprising fellows from Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Srilanka for the preparatory discourses like follows: (1) Programme(2) Finance(3)Mobilisation and (4)Media & Communication. The Finance Committee will meet on 29 January, 2011, the Programme Committee on 30 January. The rest will be having meeting within 31 January. VOICE FROM 3 DAY BOAT VOYAGE FREE BRAHMAPUTRA FROM THE CLAWS OF MEGADAM TO BE BUILT BY CHINA AND INDIA Roumari, Kurigram,15 DEC,2010: The 'Voice from 3 Day Boat Voyage' organised by Angikar Bangladesh started its journey from Mymensingh along the Brahmaputra on 12 December afternoon and it was concluded at Roumari after the dusk on 14 December,2010. The main voice or the theme-call of the boat voyage was 'FREE BRAHMAPUTRA FROM THE CLAWS OF MEGADAM TO BE BUILT BY CHINA AND INDIA'.The voyage was inaugurated by an eminent educationist, President of Bangladesh College Teachers Association, Mymensingh, Professor Riazul Islam. Three boats sailed from Shaheb Park Ghat and stopped at 23 points on the route including Biddyaganj, Piyarpur, Narundi, Nandina, Jamalpur, Melandaha, Dewanganj and Roumari. At all the points local people and organisations were apprised on the gravity of the situation emanated from the would be built Megadams in the upstream of China and India.Thousands of leaflets were distributed to the people along the route. The downstream portions of Assom, Meghalaya and Bangladesh would be the most threaned part of the basin due to the mega obstruction of the 3000km long Brahmaputra at several upstream points by China and India. The ecology, biodiversiy, riverine livelihood, agriculture, economy and culture of the downstream portion including the whole Bangladesh will sure to be at perils. His Excellency, Mr. Pinak Ranjan Chakroborty, HC of India in Bangladesh now must term the Indian Assamese youth demonstrators as *'illiterate,foolish,stupid' * as because they are not yet aware of the *MEGA-BENEFITS *of mega dams. [GreenYouth] TORCH ILLUMINATED CLARION CALL LETTER TO THE BANGLADESH PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION.
*Dhaka:27 July:2009.* This evening the historical place of Language Martyr's Memorial witnessed a torch illumination event participated by hundreds of people and youth wherein *a clarion call letter *was read out and approved. The letter-call was meant for a 11-member Bangladesh Parliamentary delegation bound for India to visit the site of the Tipaimukh dam. The event was dominated by thunderous voices of NO NO NO to Tipaimukh Dam. The torches were illuminated as soon as the curtain of dusk dropped in and the CLARION-CALL LETTER with 12 points was read out by Engineer Muhammad Hilaluddin, Coordinator, National Tipaimukh Dam Resistance Committee NTDRC. The participants endorsed the letter raising their torches. The event was participated by Professor ABM Faroque of Dhaka University, Mohsin Ali, Coordinator, Governance Advocacy Forum, Abdul Awal, Chairperson, SUPRO, Ratan Sarkar, Executive Director, INCIDIN, Rafikul Islam,ALRD,Alamgir Kabir, Chief of Green Voice, Tushar Rehman, Coordinator, Citizens Rights Movement, Khan Asaduzzaman Masum, President Bangladesh Students Union, Khandakar Muktadir among others. Draft NATIONAL TIPAIMUKH DAM CONFERENCE ntdc2009 19 June,Friday,2009. 09.30 A.M. to 05.30 P.M. Venue: Seminar Room, Institution of Engineers,Bangladesh (IEB) Headquarters, Ramna, Dhaka. WRAP UP REPORT The inaugural session was held in an atmosphere of determination and jubilation.It was attended by more than 400 water rights activists from around the country. Hon'ble Minister of Finance, Government of Bangladesh, Mr. AMA Muhith graced the occasionOB, as the Chief Guest. Mr.Rashed Khan Menon Member of Parliament and President, Bangladesher Workers Party, Mr.Mujahidul Islam Selim,General Secretary, Communist Party of Bangladesh , Dr. R.K.Ranjan from CCDD, Manipur, India,Mr. Fazle Hossain Badsha, Member of Parliament, Mohammad Afzal, President of Gonotontri Party, Farah Kabir,Country Director,Action Aid Bangladesh made deliberations in the capacity of Special Guests in the inaugural session. Professor ABM Farouk presided over the session. Engineer Muhammad Hilaluddin, Chief Director, Angikar Bangladesh Foundation, made the inaugural power point presentation and moderated the session. The Chief Guest in his speech categorally spoke about the possible adverse impact of the Tipaimukh dam and suggested for seizing the opportunity of engaging into discussion with India and raise the necessary points. Mr. Muhith discouraged the method of leading hate campaign and express extreme words in this regard. He stressed the need for getting all the pertinent data and information from the Indian authorities. Mr. Muhith stressed the need for joint initiativeof the countries belonging to GBM basin. All other speakers said sraightwordedly ' NO TO TIPAIMUKH DAM' and resolved to generate an intensified, strong and united movement of the people of both Bangladesh and India against the dam. The 2nd and concluding session of the ntdc2009 was chaired by a veteran educationist of the country, Professor Riazul Islam which was addressed by Khalequzzaman, Convenor, Bangladesher Somajtantric Dal BSD, Mostofa Kamal Mojumdar, Editor, the New Nation, Muniruzzaman, Senior Assistant Editor, Daily Sangbad, Ramananda from Manipur, Mohsin Ali, Coordinator, Governance Advocacy Forum, Ratan Sarkar, Executive Director, INCIDIN, Advocate Moinuddin Jalal ,Chief Coordinator, Angikar Bangladesh, Sylhet Division. Dr.M.A. Matin, General Secretary, Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon, BAPA guided the session towards achieving the strategic and tactical targets of the anti-Tipaimukh Dam movement. Decisions and resolutions of ntdc2009: 1. The delegates of ntdc2009 after thorough and careful analysis of the latest situation and developments centering around the Tipaimukh Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project TMHP since the sudden visit of Secretary, External Affairs of India to Bangladesh in April, 2009 and his related statements, opine that the Indian proposal for a visit of Bangladesh Parliamentary delegation to the Tipaimukh Dam project-site does not seem to be of any meaningful exercise as there is no sign of construcion as yet on the site. The delegation will just be enjoying the scenic beauty of the dam location which will ultimately be submerged after the construction. 2. The Indian relevant authorities finalized their design of the TMHP basing upon data and information of the 277 km stretch (existing within the Indian boundary) of the Barak-Meghna riversystem and they just ignored and overlooked science in not considering the impact at the 669 km stretch of the downstream of the same riversystem flowing across Bangladesh. India never consulted with Bangladesh or send any relevant data and information to Bangladesh regarding the design of TMHP. The ntdc2009 considers it of paramount importance to make all the data and information regarding theTMHP open and available to the people and government of Bangladesh by the Indian authorities immediately. The ntdc2009 demands immediate andadequate steps from the Bangladesh authorities in the assessment of the downstream impact of the THMP within Bangladesh. 3.The participants of the ntdc2009 express the firm expectation to the 9th National Parliament of Bangladesh that it will adopt an unanimous resolution demanding the immediate scrapping of the THMP. Any official delegation from Bangladesh, if sent to India, will have discussion only upon the unanimous resolution of the parliament. 4.The participants of the ntdc2009 express the firm expectation to the 9th National Parliament of Bangladesh that it will adopt an unanimous resolution demanding the immediate stoppage and scrapping of all the intervening projects on the Brahmaputra at the upstream in PR China and India. 5. The ntdc2009 calls upon the people and political forces of the country to forge a strong national unity on the Tipaimukh Dam issue and avoid all sorts of tricky and sectarian games in the overall survival question of the riverine civilization of Bangladesh. 6. Dear All, The ntdc2009 preparatory committe meeting was held yesterday, 03 June, 2009 amidst inclement weather chaired by Mr. Sukanta Sen, Director, BARCIK. 11 members were present and 8 members ensured their telephonic presence. The meeting discussed threadbare preparations of the conference. The conference itinerary, probable guests and conference planning were discused in details. The meeting entrusted the following members for drafting the final declaration of ntdc2009 : 1. Dr. M.A. Matin. General Secretary, BAPA. 2. Sukanta Sen, Director, BARCIK. 3. Muhammad Hilaluddin. ANGIKAR. WAVE Foundation agreed to lead the conference day secretariat. Mr.Akmat of WAVE Foundation and Mr. Alam of INCIDIN will take care of food matters.
