ubuntu-gnome-default-settings (17.04.1) zesty; urgency=medium

  * Set Firefox homepage back to Mozilla's default about:home
(LP: #1671626)
  * Add defaults for Onboard (onscreen keyboard). Diff from ubuntu-settings:
- Set default font to Cantarell, the GNOME default font
- Don't set Win key label to the Ubuntu logo since that only
  works with the Ubuntu font

Status in curtin:

Status in curtin source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released
Status in curtin source package in Yakkety:

Bug description:
   Begin Curtin SRU Template
  [Impact]
  Curtin currently does not support specifying iSCSI targets in the storage
  configuration. That means that MAAS or other users of curtin are not able
  to install to use iscsi disks during installation.

  The changes in this bug add the ability to specify non-root iSCSI targets
  to curtin, and include integration tests (vmtest) and unit tests to excercise
  the functionality.

  [Test Case]
  Run curtin vmtest on tests/vmtests/test_iscsi.py.
   ./tools/jenkins-runner tests/vmtests/test_iscsi.py

  The named test sets up an iscsi server with tgt and does an installation
  utilizing the disks provided by that iscsi server.

  [Regression Potential]
  Regression would most likely be a result of the new iscsi functionality
  mis-identifying configuration for a local disk as a iscsi disk, and then
  failing to do things as a result.

   End Curtin SRU Template

  [FFe Justification]

   - Curtin currently does not support specifying iSCSI targets in the
  storage configuration.

   - Users have iSCSI targets they would like to install to via curtin.

   - The changes in this bug add the ability to specify non-root iSCSI
  targets in the YAML and include vmtests and unittests for that
  functionality.

   - Existing users are unaffected by this change, as if they specified
  a iSCSI compatible value in their YAML currently it would fail to
  parse. The added code is only used when iSCSI is used.

  ---

  Curtin needs to support the ability to attach an ISCSI block device
  during the installation and perform disk operations just like a
  locally attached block device. The disk also needs to be auto mounted
  when Ubuntu is rebooted after installation.

  Possible format:

  - id: sdb
    type: disk
    iscsi:
  target: iqn.2016-11.io.maas:storage.lun1
  portal: 192.168.122.2:3260

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1624394] Re: mimedefang: md-mx-ctrl reread does not work

Title:
  mimedefang: md-mx-ctrl reread does not work

Status in mimedefang package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in mimedefang source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  This is a regression.

  While the main purpose of this is to "reread the filter rules", the
  biggest use by frequency is to reload the SpamAssassin rules. In our
  production deployment, this happens up to daily--every time their is a
  SpamAssassin rule update released.

  Without the ability to use "reread", one must fall back on "restart".
  That's a disruptive operation that will result in mail being
  tempfailed for a short period of time.

  If sysadmins have not noticed this regression, then rule changes are
  not getting applied properly, though normal slave turnover eventually
  brings them in.

  [Test Case]

  Steps to reproduce:
  sudo md-mx-ctrl reread

  Expected results:
  Forced reread of filter rules

  Actual results:
  Cannot destroy and recreate a Perl interpreter safely on this platform.
Filter rules will NOT be reread.

  [Regression Potential]

  The regression potential is small. The patch changes a ./configure
  test only. The only impact on the application code comes from the
  SAFE_EMBED_PERL #define being correctly enabled again, which it has
  been "forever".

  [Other Info]

  This patch has been accepted upstream:

http://lists.roaringpenguin.com/pipermail/mimedefang/2016-September/037862.html

  I am running this change in production, as installed from our PPA:

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1556997] Re: [SRU] JAVA_HOME auto-detection fails due to whitespace in update-java-alternatives output

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * running imagej with auto detected JAVA_HOME fails

  [Test Case]

   * run it

  [Regression Potential]

   * none, this is a bug because update-java-alternatives has a
  whitespace in its output, and parsing fails

  [Other Info]

  Running imagej fails with the following message:

     Open other images in this ImageJ panel as follows:
   imagej -p 3  [ ... ]

     No JVM found to run ImageJ
     Please apt-get install a JVM to run ImageJ or
     set JAVA_HOME if it's not a JVM from a Debian Package.

  even though multiple JVM's are installed here.

  The problem is that the /usr/bin/imagej script detects JAVA_HOME using

     JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/sbin/update-java-alternatives -l | grep openjdk |
  sort | tail -1 | cut -d' ' -f 3)

  which is empty as the output of update-java-alternatives -l is (note
  multiple spaces between columns):

  java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64   1061
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64
  java-1.7.0-openjdk-amd64   1071
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-openjdk-amd64
  java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64   1081
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64

  and cut -d' ' -f3 selects space. The solution is to squeeze multiple
  spaces before running cut, so the line should read:

     JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/sbin/update-java-alternatives -l | grep openjdk |
  sort | tail -1 | tr -s ' ' | cut -d' ' -f 3)

  which then gives the correct output (/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-
  amd64 in my case) and makes imagej run as expected.

Bug description:

  [Impact]
  A feature was added to curtin upstream to allow the package build
  process to add its version to the curtin version reported.

  That version is exposed via:
$ curtin version
0.1.0~bzr460-0ubuntu1

  And then also
$ python3 -c 'from curtin import version; print(version.version_string())'
0.1.0~bzr460-0ubuntu1

  The above are shown in zesty. However, the SRU'd versions did not
  get the packaging change to write that information, so they show only

0.1.0

  The fix is to make the change made in zesty's debian/rules.

  [Test Case]

   $ apt-get install curtin
   $ curtin version

  Expect to see the packaged version reported, with bzr460 in it.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low chance of regression, as 'curtin version' and the python library
  function version_string was only recently added for this feature, so
  nothing would depend on the broken behavior.

   End SRU Template

  in trunk revno 448, we added patching of a file in curtin via
  debian/rules so that the packaged version would report its version
  correctly.

Status in curtin source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  The Backups application's Overview screen says "You can restore the
  entire backup with the Restore... button or use Files"

  It should say "or use Caja", since the file manager in Mate has been
  renamed Caja.

  Screenshot attached.

  [Impact]
  * Users of Mate which use Déjà Dup get confused by the wrong terminology
regarding their file manager.
  * The upstream fix detects Mate desktops using XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP and fills
a new variable with "Caja" or "Files". That variable is included in the string
afterwards.

  [Test Case]
  * Open Déjà Dup inside Ubuntu Mate (launch "deja-dup-preferences" from a
terminal)
  * Install the necessary software by clicking the "Install..."-button.
  * Create a backup:
  - Choose a location on the "Storage Location" tab (or use the default
local folder)
  - On the "Overview" tab perform a backup using the button "Backup now"
  * On the "Overview" tab: Look at the description above the restore button.
  * It refers to Files instead of Caja

  [Regression Potential]
  * None that I am aware of. The worst case should be limited to a broken (or
untranslated) string in Déjà Dup itself.

  == Begin SRU Template ==
  [Impact]

   * On upgrade of tomcat7 package, if a user has updated their JAVA_OPTS
variable to include a '%' an upgrade will fail. The sed command in the postinst
uses the '%' character to act as a delimiter, previous versions used '/'
however it was updated to '%' in hopes it was far less common.
   * This SRU updates it to a character that should not be found in the
JAVA_ARGS value, namely '\001'.
   * This is the same solution Debian and tomcat maintainers are now using for
Tomcat8.

  [Test Case]

  Install the version from the trusty pocket. Modify JAVA_OPTS and then
  install the version from security/updates to reproduce the issue.

   * lxc launch ubuntu-daily:trusty terusty
   * lxc exec trusty bash
   * apt install tomcat7=7.0.52-1
   * Edit /etc/defaults/tomcat7, set JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true
-XX:ErrorFile=/var/log/tomcat7/java_error%p.log -XX:+DisableExplicitGC
-XX:+UseG1GC"
   * Enable proposed or use version from ppa (ppa:powersj/tomcat7-1666570)
   * apt update
   * apt install tomcat7
   * Keep the local version currently installed
   * With the fix, install will complete
   * Without the fix, post-installation script will return a sed -e expression
#1 error.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Using a new delimiter that is far less likely to be in someone's path.
This is not the first time the delimiter has changed, as it originally as '/'
which is obviously going to show up as soon as someone adds a path.
   * Upstream change to tomcat8:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-java/tomcat8.git/patch/?id=7664221d66701e2c31a31fe3b4f22e8bea4158dc

  [Other Info]

   * Error message on failure:

  Setting up tomcat7 (7.0.52-1ubuntu0.10) ...
  sed: -e expression #1, char 97: unknown option to `s'
  dpkg: error processing package tomcat7 (--configure):

  Subject: [PATCH] arm: do not build iomem.o target with no soruce

  Header files should be added to the distribution but not
  used to derive targets for compilation. In this an attempt was
  made to build iomem.o, but iomem.c does not exist so this fails.

  Fixes: 1574ff1aae4f ("arm: include phys_to_virt.h and iomem.h in
distribution")
  Signed-off-by: Simon Horman
  Reviewed-by: Pratyush Anand

  [Test Case]
  Build kexec-tools package from Xenial/Yakkety source in armhf system.

  [Regression Potential]
  Since patch is confined to arm there is a low overall risk of regression

  Firefox 52 drops support for traditional NPAPI plugins. This means that
https://extensions.gnome.org/ will stop working unless users have
chrome-gnome-shell installed. They'll also need to install a browser plugin but
https://extensions.gnome.org/ explains how to do that. For more info, see LP:
#1652537

  This bug is just having ubuntu-gnome-desktop dependd on chrome-gnome-
  shell.

  Test Case
  -
  Check that ubuntu-gnome-desktop depends on chrome-gnome-shell.

  Regression Potential

  Low. chrome-gnome-shell itself was verified in the other bug.

  Other Info
  ---
  This was already done in zesty:
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-gnome-meta/0.73

  Trusty's chrome-gnome-shell failed verification so I'm not uploading
  trusty's ubuntu-gnome-meta update yet.

  Original Bug Report
  ---
  ubuntu gnome 14.04 is missing the gnome shell integration plugin.

  when executing 'dpkg-query -L gnome-shell', '/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
  /libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so' is reported as installed, but there
  is no mention of chromium

   * lxc launch ubuntu-daily:trusty terusty
   * lxc exec trusty bash
   * apt install tomcat7=7.0.52-1
   * Edit /etc/defaults/tomcat7, set JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true
-XX:ErrorFile=/var/log/tomcat7/java_error%p.log -XX:+DisableExplicitGC
-XX:+UseG1GC"
   * Enable proposed or use version from ppa (ppa:powersj/tomcat7-1666570)
   * apt update
   * apt install tomcat7
   * Keep the local version currently installed
   * With the fix, install will complete
   * Without the fix, post-installation script will return a sed -e expression
#1 error.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Using a new delimiter that is far less likely to be in someone's path.
This is not the first time the delimiter has changed, as it originally as '/'
which is obviously going to show up as soon as someone adds a path.
   * Upstream change to tomcat8:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-java/tomcat8.git/patch/?id=7664221d66701e2c31a31fe3b4f22e8bea4158dc

  [Other Info]

   * Error message on failure:

  Setting up tomcat7 (7.0.52-1ubuntu0.10) ...
  sed: -e expression #1, char 97: unknown option to `s'
  dpkg: error processing package tomcat7 (--configure):

  gnome-shell provides a browser plugin so that users can manage GNOME Shell
extensions by visiting https:/extensions.gnome.org/ in Firefox and compatible
browsers.

  This extension will stop working in Firefox once users upgrade to
  Firefox 52. Firefox 52 is scheduled for upstream release March 7, 2017
  and 52 Beta will open approximately January 24.

  chrome-gnome-shell version 8 adds Firefox support that will keep
  working in Firefox 52 and beyond.

  There are actually two parts to chrome-gnome-shell: a system helper and a
browser addon. The chrome-gnome-shell package provides the system helper. The
browser addon can be installed directly without admin privileges from
  https://addons.mozilla.org/en/firefox/addon/gnome-shell-integration/

  or for Chrome at

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gnome-shell-integration/gphhapmejobijbbhgpjhcjognlahblep

  For more details, see

https://blogs.gnome.org/ne0sight/2016/12/25/how-to-install-gnome-shell-extensions-with-firefox-52/

  Test Case
  =
  - In Ubuntu GNOME, install the updated chrome-gnome-shell
  - Open Firefox and browse to https://extensions.gnome.org/local/
  - In the list of extensions, turn on the "Applications Menu". The Activities
button in the top left of the screen should now read Applications and show a
menu of installed apps when clicked.
  - Turn off the "Applications Menu". The Applications button should revert to
being a simple Activities button.

  * Repeat the above test with chromium-browser

  * If you are using Firefox 51, that test was just testing the old
functionality (It's important that it still works though!). To test the new
version:
  - Install
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/gnome-shell-integration/
  - To make sure that you aren't testing the old functionality, run
  sudo rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so
  - Restart Firefox and do the above "Applications Menu" test.

  - When you are finished testing, run this command to restore the manually
deleted file:
  sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-shell

  Regression Potential
  ===
  It's important that installing the Firefox helper does not break the existing
Firefox support for https://extensions.gnome.org/

  Other Info
  ==
  chrome-gnome-shell 7 is available in Ubuntu 16.10. We want to make version 8
available in -updates for 16.10, 16.04 and 14.04 LTS. (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is
completely End of Life in April and was never officially supported by Ubuntu
GNOME.)

  For 16.10, I am backporting the updated packaging since the changes
  are minor and make sense.

  For the ubuntu-gnome-desktop metapackage update, see
  https://launchpad.net/bugs/1652538

  It might be nice if a future chrome-gnome-shell would include the
  Firefox addon too instead of just the system helper, but that's
  complicated since I believe addons need to be signed in Ubuntu.

Bug description:
  [SRU justification]
  This fix is needed to make sure that the system does not hang on shutdown
when /var is a speparate file system

  [Impact]
  System can hang up to 10 minutes if not fixed.

  [Fix]
  Change the systemd unit's ExecStart to an ExecStop so the unit is correctly
sequenced.

  [Test Case]
  In a VM with /var separated from the / file system, shutdown the VM. It will
hang for 10 minutes

  [Regression]
  None to be expected. A ExecStop unit will be sequenced before the Before=
units which is earlier than previously.

  [Original description of the problem]
  The systemd unit file unattended-upgrades.service is used to stop a running
unattended-upgrade
  process during shutdown. This unit file is running together with all
filesystem
  unmount services.

  The unattended-upgrades service checks if the lockfile for unattended-upgrade
  (in /var/run) exists, and if it does, there is an unattended-upgrade in
progress
  and the service will wait until it finishes (and therefore automatically wait
at
  shutdown).

  However, if /var is a separate filesystem, it will get unmounted even though
/var/run
  is a tmpfs that's still mounted on top of the /var/run directory in the /var
filesystem.
  The unattended-upgrade script will fail to find lockfile, sleeps for 5
seconds, and
  tries to check the lockfile again. After 10 minutes (the default timeout), it
will finally
  exit and the system will continue shutdown.

  The problem is the error handling in
/usr/share/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrade-shutdown
  where it tries to lock itself:

  while True:
  res = apt_pkg.get_lock(options.lock_file)
  logging.debug("get_lock returned %i" % res)
  # exit here if there is no lock
  if res > 0:
  logging.debug("lock not taken")
  break
  lock_was_taken = True

  The function apt_pkg.get_lock() either returns a file descriptor, or -1 on an
error.
  File descriptors are just C file descriptors, so they are always positive
integers.
  The code should check the result to be negative, not positive. I have
attached a patch
  to reverse the logic.

  output of invoke-rc.d for systemd units un-debuggable on failure

Status in init-system-helpers package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in init-system-helpers source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
  Currently if a systemd unit fails to start in a non-interactive upgrade and
all you have is a log, it's impossible to debug. Fix this so that logs contain
the actual details of the unit failure.

  [Test case]
  1. Get a root shell.
  2. Run "sed -e's,sbin/sshd,sbin/sshd-noexists,; /Alias/d'
/lib/systemd/system/ssh.service > /lib/systemd/system/ssh-noexists.service"
  3. Run 'systemctl enable ssh-noexists'
  4. Run 'ln -s ../init.d/ssh /etc/rc5.d/S02ssh-noexists'
  5. Run 'invoke-rc.d ssh-noexists start'
  6. Verify that the command directs you to run 'systemctl status' for details,
and provides no details.
  7. Install init-system-helpers from -proposed.
  8. Run 'invoke-rc.d ssh-noexists start'.
  9. Verify that the command provides details about the failure to start
ssh-noexists service.
  10. Run 'systemctl disable ssh-noexists'.
  11. Run 'rm -f /lib/systemd/system/ssh-noexists.service'.
  12. Run 'rm -f /etc/rc5.d/S02ssh-noexists'

  [Regression potential]
  Minimal. On the failure case, an additional command is run; the additional
command is guarded with || true.

  [Original description]

  When invoke-rc.d is called on a systemd system, if the unit fails to
  start, you get output like:

  Created symlink
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/openafs-fileserver.service →
/lib/systemd/system/openafs-fileserver.service.
  Job for openafs-fileserver.service failed because the control process exited
with error code.
  See "systemctl status openafs-fileserver.service" and "journalctl -xe" for
details.
  invoke-rc.d: initscript openafs-fileserver, action "start" failed.
  dpkg: error processing package openafs-fileserver (--configure):
   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

  The output shown here comes from systemctl itself, and is usually
  fine. The admin who ran systemctl can run those other commands to
  debug.

  However, when called by invoke-rc.d, this output is usually seen only
  in a log file; maybe submitted in a bug report, maybe attached to
  something like an autopkgtest:

https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac
  /autopkgtest-yakkety/yakkety/armhf/o/openafs/20160624_174535@/log.gz

  By the time someone looks at this log output, it is often too late to
  run those commands in order to debug the failure.

  invoke-rc.d should call these commands for us on systemd unit failure,
  so that the relevant debugging information is included in the log
  where it can help.

  We don't want to call 'journalctl -xe', which might leak information
  into the log from other jobs, but 'journalctl -x -u ' may
  be appropriate.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1640878] Re: grub2 cannot currently generate configuration without initrd

2017-03-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker

non-initrd boot config. Thanks Chris Glass! (LP: #1640878)

  grub2 cannot currently generate configuration without initrd

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:

Status in grub2-signed package in Ubuntu:

Status in grub2 source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  As it currently stands grub2 cannot create grub.cfg menu entries that do not
use an initrd image if one is present but the user does not desire to use it.
  Furthermore, root= entries only support UUID and LABEL, but neither is an
option if booting the kernel without an initrd.

  Suggestion:

  Allow grub2 to create configuration files without an "initrd" line and
  passing PARTUUID as root= entry by adding configuration knobs.

  [SRU Justification]
  A lot of time is wasted across the many, many instances of Ubuntu loading
initramfs when booting. It's a measurable savings of CPU time and electricity
to skip loading an initramfs at boot if it's not required.

  [Test case]
  1. cp /boot/grub/grub.cfg /tmp/grub.cfg
  2. install the grub packages from -proposed.
  3. cmp /boot/grub/grub.cfg /tmp/grub.cfg || echo 'fail'
  4. as root, configure /etc/default/grub to mount the root disk directly and
bypass the initramfs:
    echo GRUB_DISABLE_INITRD=true >> /etc/default/grub
    root=$(awk > /etc/default/grub
    fi
  5. If a partuuid has been found, run update-grub. Note that this will only
work if your root device is a partition on a GPT-formatted disk.
  6. Check that /boot/grub/grub.cfg now contains entries that don't specify an
initramfs, and do include root=PARTUUID=* on the kernel commandline.

  [Regression potential]
  This upload introduces no behavior changes unless the user updates
/etc/default/grub to configure the use of the new feature, so there should be
no regressions here. The SRU test case verifies that /boot/grub/grub.cfg
remains unchanged with the new version.

  Installing the above and rebuilding the package fixed the problem for

  Title: kio: Information Leak when accessing https when using a
malicious PAC file
  Risk Rating:Medium
  CVE:TBC
  Versions:   kio < 5.32, kdelibs < 4.14.30
  Date:   28 February 2017

  Overview

  Using a malicious PAC file, and then using exfiltration methods in the PAC
  function FindProxyForURL() enables the attacker to expose full https URLs.

  This is a security issue since https URLs may contain sensitive
  information in the URL authentication part (user:password@host), and in the
  path and the query (e.g. access tokens).

  This attack can be carried out remotely (over the LAN) since proxy settings
  allow “Detect Proxy Configuration Automatically”.
  This setting uses WPAD to retrieve the PAC file, and an attacker who has
access
  to the victim’s LAN can interfere with the WPAD protocols (DHCP/DNS+HTTP)
  and inject his/her own malicious PAC instead of the legitimate one.

  Solution

  Update to kio >= 5.32 and kdelibs >= 4.14.30 (when released)

  Or apply the following patches:
  kio: https://commits.kde.org/kio/f9d0cb47cf94e209f6171ac0e8d774e68156a6e4
  kdelibs:

  The workaround is to put a `sleep 3` on the 320. line of
mysql-server-5.7.postinst script (right before `mysql_upgrade
--defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf || result=$?` )

  The root cause seems to be that invoke-rc.d does not execute systemctl
  --wait, and systemctl without wait doesn't wait until the database
  server daemon is up and listening.

  And of course it could be mitigated by using a systemd socket for
  mysql.

  snappy in 16.04 used to compare /usr/share/snappy/security-policy-
  version and /var/lib/snappy/security-policy-version on boot to see if
  the apparmor package changed and therefore if it needed to regenerate
  all snap policy. This functionality was recently removed with nothing
  added to replace it.

  snapd must have a means to detect changes to the parser or the
  abstractions which the snap may #include, otherwise we cannot deliver
  parser and policy fixes from apparmor to installed snaps. It is fine
  to use a different method than what we had before, but we need to have
  something.

Thanks - I'll cherry-pick that into Debian, so zesty will get the fix.
I'd appreciate somebody else handling SRUs, though.

  ---Problem Description---
  On ppc64el qemu the order of device scanning was recently changed, causing
device names to be in reverse order compared to e.g. x86. This is creating a
need for all sorts of work arounds to make the code that assumes certain order
of devices to work on Power.

  The fix has been proposed and it appears it would go into Qemu 2.9, see [1].
It might be awhile until qemu 2.9 gets widely adopted as default. It would be
beneficial if the fix can be backported to an earlier versions of Qemu.
