  Installed snaps show twice in GNOME Software. The solution is to not scan the
installed .desktop files - there is sufficient information provided by snapd.

  [Test Case]
  1. Open GNOME Software
  2. Install a snap (e.g. ohmygiraffe)
  3. Switched to "Installed" tab

  Expected result:
  ohmygiraffe is shown once in the installed list.

  Observed result:
  ohmygiraffe is shown twice. One entry has data from the snap metadata, the
other from the installed .desktop file.

  [Regression Potential]
  There is some risk of breaking other appstream behaviour. The risk is low
because we only filter out the snapd specific directory that contains this data.

  Azure identifies itself to guests by setting a well known value in the
chassis asset field of dmi data. This is done both in Azure public cloud and
in Azure Stack (the on-premise variant of Azure).

  By checking for this value cloud-init can more quickly identify
  whether or not it is running on Azure.

  [Test Case]
   - Launch an instance, enable proposed, upgrade.
   - Clean instance and re-boot
     $ rm -Rf /var/lib/cloud /var/log/cloud-init*
     $ rm -f /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/91_walinuxagent.cfg  # bug 1700769
     $ reboot

   - ssh back in look around
     - confirm 'WARN' does not appear in /var/log/cloud-init*
     - look in /run/cloud-init/ds-identify.log. It should say:
    Found single datasource: Azure

   - reboot, ssh back in and verify all still good.

  [Regression Potential]
  Instances running in Azure or Azure Stack that did *not* have this value
  would not be identified as Azure. We have been told by representatives
  from Microsoft that that will not be the case.

  [Other Info]
  Upstream commit at
    https://git.launchpad.net/cloud-init/commit/?id=5fb49bac

  === End SRU Template ===

  I've got confirmation that the chassis_asset_tag DMI value is a hard-
  coded identifier for the Azure platform (both Azure and Azure Stack
  (the on-premise variant of Azure)).

  $ cat /sys/class/dmi/id/chassis_asset_tag
  7783-7084-3265-9085-8269-3286-77

  The detection logic in both ds-identify and Azure ds should be updated
  to use this value.

  A new feature in Azure allows instances the ability to utilize
  SR-IOV networking. Currently, Ubuntu images will fail to boot there.

  [Test Case]
  Testing this comes in the following parts:
  a.) check that no regressions have leaked in outside of Azure.
  b.) upgraded instance without SR-IOV device upgrade and reboot.
  c.) fresh instance with SR-IOV and updated cloud-init and reboot.
  d.) fresh instance without SR-IOV and updated cloud-init and reboot.

  The cases above generally verify that users have not been exposed
  to unexpected changes in behavior, and that the fix is correctly
  applied.

  After each boot, the user should collect logs, and generally look around
  for evidence of failure. One tool that can be used to collected these
  logs is 'save-old-data' at [1]. That checks for many common issues with
  systemd boot.

  [1] https://git.launchpad.net/~smoser/cloud-init/+git/sru-
  info/tree/bin/save-old-data

  [Regression Potential]
  The majority of the changes have been limited to the Azure code path.
  Regressions then are likely limited to Azure users, and would most
  likely present themselves as network configuration failures on reboot
  or first boot.

  [Other Info]
  Upstream commit at
https://git.launchpad.net/cloud-init/commit/?id=ebc9ecbc8a

  === End SRU Template ===

  We are in the process of rolling out SR-IOV in Azure (available as a
  preview now, contact me offline and we can work out getting your
  subscription addedif you want to try it). In general our normal
  synthetic interface appears as eth0 and the VF comes in as eth1. We
  intend to bond these interfaces together so that if the VF goes down,
  or the VM is migrated to where no VF is present, eth0 remains as the
  valid default interface.

  At the moment we are handling the bonding via this script:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git/plain/tools/hv/bondvf.sh

  We were looking at ways to either integrate the behavior into cloud-
  init or invoke the script from cloud-init and do the right thing.

  We recently observed after https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
  /cloud-init/+bug/1669860 that the VF interface gets renamed to
  something like "enP1p0s2" but more recently as "rename2".

  Is it possible that 1669860 needs to be expanded to cover our case or
  is there something we should be doing to make sure that change is
  working properly for SR-IOV in Azure?

  [Impact]
  A cloud-config that contains packages to install (see below) or
  'package_upgrade' will run 'apt-get update'. That can sometimes fail as a
  result of contention with the apt-daily.service that updates that information.

  Cloud-config showing the problem is just like:

    $ cat my.yaml
    #cloud-config
    packages: ['hello']

  [Test Case]
  lxc-proposed-snapshot is

https://git.launchpad.net/~smoser/cloud-init/+git/sru-info/tree/bin/lxc-proposed-snapshot
  It publishes an image to lxd with proposed enabled and cloud-init upgraded.

  a.) launch an instance with proposed version of cloud-init and some user-data.
     This is platform independent. The test case demonstrates lxd.
     $ printf "%s\n%s\n%s\n" "#cloud-config" "packages: ['hello']" \
     "package_upgrade: true" > config.yaml
     $ release=xenial
     $ ref=proposed-$release
     $ ./lxc-proposed-snapshot --proposed --publish $release $ref;

  b.) start the instance
     $ name=$release-1693361
     $ lxc launch my-xenial "--config=user.user-data=$(cat config.yaml)
     $ sleep 1
     $ lxc exec $name -- tail -f /var/log/cloud-init.log
/var/log/cloud-init-output.log
     # watch this boot.

   c.) Look for evidence of systemd failure
     journalctl -o short-precise | grep -i break
     journalctl -o short-precise | grep -i order

  [Regression Potential]
  Regression chance here is low. Its possible that ordering loops
  could occur. When that does happen, journalctl will mention it.
Unfortunately
  in such cases systemd somewhat randomly picks a service to kil so behavior
  is somewhat undefined.

  [Other Info]
  Upstream commit at
    https://git.launchpad.net/cloud-init/commit/?id=11121fe4

  === End SRU Template ===

  apt-daily is now a systemd service rather than being invoked by
  cron.daily. If one builds a custom AMI it is possible that the apt-
  daily.timer will fire during boot. This can fire at the same time
  cloud-init is running and if cloud-init loses the race the invocation
  of apt (e.g. use of "packages:" in the config) will fail.

  There is a lot of discussion online about this change to apt-daily
  (e.g. unattended upgrades happening during business hours, delaying
  boot, etc.) and discussion of potential systemd changes regarding
  timers firing during boot (c.f.
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/5659).

  While it would be better to solve this in apt itself, I suggest that
  cloud-init be defensive when calling apt and implement some retry
  mechanism.

  Some packages stall on installing. These are packages that generate multiple
debconf prompts (the prompts may be empty and so not user visible, e.g.
gconf2-common).

  [Test Case]
  1. Remove gconf2-common (warning, may uninstall packages like gnome-terminal):
  $ sudo apt purge gconf2-common
  2. Download the debian package of Chrome from www.google.com/chrome.
  3. Install the package (browser will prompt, or double click on package in
Nautilus).

  Expected result:
  Chrome installs correctly.

  Observed result:
  The installation hangs on 51%.

  [Regression Potential]
  The debconf conde was modified to support multiple requests. This could
expose other debconf issues or break other .deb install code.

  Snaps without icons don't show in the installed tab. They do show in search,
because the icon is sourced from the store.

  [Test Case]
  1. Open GNOME Software
  2. Install a snap without an icon (e.g. moon-buggy)
  3. Close GNOME Software
  4. Open GNOME Software
  5. Click "installed" tab

  Expected result:
  Installed snap is shown

  Observed result:
  Snap is not shown

  [Regression Potential]
  The code was refactored to download the store information for installed
snaps. This means the store icon shows if the installed snap didn't have one.
There is some risk of new bugs being caused by the refactoring.

  This release sports both bug-fixes and new features and we would like to
  make sure all of our supported customers have access to these improvements.
  The notable ones are:

    * Make systems with root on bcache use root=UUID=. (LP: #1680591)
    * Fix iscsi disks that have a ':' in the target name. (LP: #1679222)
    * Add support for installing Ubuntu-Core 16 images
    * Clear and re-order UEFI boot methods during UEFI grub installation. (LP:

    * Fix stacked storage configurations with iSCSI (LP: #1683910)
    * clear-holders: mdadm use /proc/mdstat to wait for array to stop (LP:

    * clear-holders: make bcache handler wait for device shutdown (LP: #1680409)
    * Copy curtin install log into target. (LP: #1684128)
    * block_meta: Attempt to mount by UUID= if possible (LP: #1676991)

  See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.

  [Test Case]
  The following development and SRU process was followed:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CurtinUpdates

  Curtin now contains an extensive integration test suite that is ran using
  the SRU package for each releases. These suite has documentation here:
  https://curtin.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/integration-testing.html

  In order to avoid regression to existing MAAS product, the MAAS team will
  run their continuous integration test against the curtin that is in
  -proposed. A successful run will be required before the proposed curtin
  can be let into -updates.

  The curtin team will be in charge of attaching the artifacts and console
  output of the appropriate run to the bug. Curtin team members will not
  mark ‘verification-done’ until this has happened.

  [Regression Potential]
  In order to mitigate the regression potential, the results of the
  aforementioned integration tests are attached to this bug.

  [Discussion]
  The primary features / fixes needed here are for Ubuntu Core support.

  == End SRU Template ==

(LP:
#1680917)
    * Fix stacked storage configurations with iSCSI (LP: #1683910)
    * clear-holders: mdadm use /proc/mdstat to wait for array to stop (LP:
#1682584)

  Bluetooth headset/speakers are listed but not selectable in Sound settings
(the correct device's options don't appear in the right pane). Hence no
Bluetooth audio is unusable.

  [Test Case]
  1. Pair a Bluetooth audio device with Ubuntu.
  2. Go to Sound settings and try to select the device.
  Expected: The Bluetooth audio device is selectable (its options appear in the
right pane when clicked and the selection stays on that device).

  [Regression Potential]
  Low. The SRU focuses on Bluetooth logic in pulseaudio, so that is the main
area affected. A combination of related A2DP bugs in pulseaudio in xenial means
it is difficult to get working at all without this patch. So highly unlikely
Bluetooth audio support could get worse. Since pulseaudio itself is being
modified there is always a regression potential in support for other audio
devices, but several audio devices have been tested and all continue to work
well with the patch.

  [Other notes]
  Related to bug 1438510 and bug 1582213. Possibly others too. The debdiff
which fixes this is attached to bug 1582213.

  Please note that Bluetooth and Bluetooth audio support in xenial is
  still not perfect. This SRU only aims to address a few of the most
  troublesome issues. Please consider the fact that this is an
  incremental improvement and some people are still likely to experience
  some bugs related to pulseaudio and Bluetooth, even after this SRU.

  The patch was authored by Luke Yelavich with help from Konrad
  Zapałowicz. And it has received further testing over the past two
  months by Konrad, Jim Hodapp and Daniel van Vugt. The debdiff proposed
  here only changes the changelog wording from Luke's original PPA.

  [Original Description]
  Hi,

  I found a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 !

  I tried to pair a bluetooth stereo headset (A2DP compatible). The
  pairing process goes well, but after that I can't select it on the
  audio preferences.

  When I select it, it only shows the last selected item options and don't do
anything. (he should switch to the headset output).
  I must mention that it worked very well on Ubuntu 12.04.

  This bug can be in the bluetooth stack or in unity-control-center or
  maybe pulseaudio. I actually have no idea.

  [Original Description]
  Just installed 15.04 fresh from the latest ISO (beta2).

  I'm bummed to see my bluetooth headset (Bose Soundlink overear) seems
  to have regressed in functionality.

  In 14.10, I was able to set the output profile either to a2dp or
  hsp/hfp (telephony duplex).

  In 15.04, it only works in telephony duplex mode. I can't get high
  fidelity sound playback to work at all.

  This thread seems to be related, though the workaround within did not solve
the problem for me:
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=194006

  The bug is still present in 16.04 LTS and 16.10.

  I have a Sennheiser MM 450-X headset.

  In 15.10, connection & playback was straightforward.

  In 16.04, the headset connects, and shows up as default playback

  A functional workaround is to, after having connected it, to go the
  `Configuration` tab, and in the `Profile` dropdown, to choose `...
  HSP/HFP`, which will make them play as expected (but in low quality),
  then switch to `... A2DP Sink` (they will play in high quality).

  Some packages stall on installing. These are packages that generate multiple
debconf prompts (the prompts may be empty and so not user visible, e.g.
gconf2-common).

  [Test Case]
  1. Remove gconf2-common (warning, may uninstall packages like gnome-terminal):
  $ sudo apt purge gconf2-common

  Some packages stall on installing. These are packages that generate multiple
debconf prompts (the prompts may be empty and so not user visible, e.g.
gconf2-common).

  [Test Case]
  1. Remove gconf2-common (warning, may uninstall packages like gnome-terminal):
  $ sudo apt purge gconf2-common

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Two releases are affected: Xenial and Yakkety.

  There are a bunch of bugfixes in 1.10.3, including HTTP/2 fixes, that
  should be included in Ubuntu. This is detailed here in the upstream
  changelog from nginx:

  Changes with nginx 1.10.3 (31 Jan 2017)

  *) Bugfix: in the "add_after_body" directive when used with the
     "sub_filter" directive.

  *) Bugfix: unix domain listen sockets might not be inherited during
     binary upgrade on Linux.

  *) Bugfix: graceful shutdown of old worker processes might require
     infinite time when using HTTP/2.

  *) Bugfix: when using HTTP/2 and the "limit_req" or "auth_request"
     directives client request body might be corrupted; the bug had
     appeared in 1.10.2.

  *) Bugfix: a segmentation fault might occur in a worker process when
     using HTTP/2; the bug had appeared in 1.10.2.

  *) Bugfix: an incorrect response might be returned when using the
     "sendfile" directive on FreeBSD and macOS; the bug had appeared in
     1.7.8.

  *) Bugfix: a truncated response might be stored in cache when using the
     "aio_write" directive.

  *) Bugfix: a socket leak might occur when using the "aio_write"
     directive.

  [Test Case]

  No test cases available as there are no bugs filed for any of these in
  Ubuntu. However, due to HTTP/2, any 'bugs' in these which may corrupt
  data or not kill worker processes correctly, or segfault, should be
  addressed.

  [Regression Potential]

  All these bugfixes were tested upstream by the nginx team, and do not
  pose a regression risk to the existing software versions or features
  of Ubuntu in affected releases.

  [Other Info]

  I will be uploading nginx 1.10.3 directly to Zesty today, and then
  have a merge ready by the end of the week for Zesty from Debian, which
  pulls in dynamic module support, etc. This SRU is written here ahead
  of having the Zesty update done, because this happens to be on my list
  of things to get done before the Zesty update.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1379080] Re: update-grub-legacy-ec2 fails to detect xen kernel

Bug description:
  The update-grub-legacy-ec2 script (which ships with grub-legacy-ec2,
  which is presumably included under cloud-init umbrella) includes a
  check to determine whether a kernel is Xen-capable or not. It uses
  this check in a feature designed to ignore non-Xen kernels on Xen
  guests, presumably as a safety mechanism. The way in which the check
  is executed is flawed - it matches against the kernel name. This means
  that if you are loading a kernel that has an 'unexpected' name,
  update-grub-legacy-ec2 will ignore the new kernel, regardless of
  whether or not it is actually Xen-capable. Output looks like this:

  Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
  Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
  Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
  Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
  Ignoring non-Xen Kernel on Xen domU host: vmlinuz-3.13.0-36-custom
  Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-36-generic
  Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

  This has been fixed on grub-legacy. Instead of matching the kernel
  name, it checks the config for CONFIG_XEN=y. In addition, Linux
  kernels come with CONFIG_XEN=y by default for some time now, and it is
  perfectly safe to run a Xen-capable kernel on non-Xen hosts.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Compile and generate debs for custom kernel with version string not
including '-generic' or '-virtual'
  2. Install debs on ec2 system (ami-a94e0c99)
  3. Reboot

  Expected results:
  System comes up with new kernel

  Actual results:
  System comes up with old kernel, and new kernel is not present in
/boot/grub/menu.lst

  Impact:
  Running ami-a94e0c99, and likely many others, a user can not install a custom
kernel without manually editing files. Furthermore, those writes will likely be
overwritten by administrative operations in the future.

  Recommendation:
  Update detection logic to search for CONFIG_XEN=y in the kernel config, and
remove version string detection.

  Please let me know how I can help this along. I can submit a proposed
  fix, but am not sure where to send it.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1686679] Re: [SRU] Ubuntu16.04 : autofs is extremely long with large number of direct maps

Status in autofs package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in autofs source package in Xenial:

Status in autofs source package in Yakkety:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  autofs service in xenial takes extremely long time since it parses the
  mount table /etc/mtab in contained_in_local_fs() to determine if the mount
  patch would be created on a local file system, that means startup process
will read /etc/mtab for every mount, so the performance is extremely low. The
customer is complaining about this point, we need to backport the
  following upstream patch.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/storage/autofs/autofs.git/commit/?id=67e7d613a4b09eeffc57ab44a7acb52027d897b2

  This fix patch removes contained_in_local_fs, and use fs.f_type in
is_remote_fstype() to determine if the mount patch would be created on a
   local file system instead.

  [Test Case]

   * Create an autofs direct mount map with large direct mappings (eg:
  8k), below is the test script I used.

  echo "/-  auto.direct--timeout 60" >> /etc/auto.master
  END=8000
  for i in $(seq 1 $END); do echo $i; echo "/test/samba/test"$i"
-fstype=cifs,rw,username=hua,password=password ://192.168.99.169/share" >>
/etc/auto.direct; done

   * Start autofs service to see if it will take too much time, below is my
   result before/after applying the fix patch.

  root@node1:~# time service autofs start
  real  3m5.481s
  user  0m0.256s
  sys   0m0.080s
  root@node1:~# time service autofs start
  real  0m0.833s
  user  0m0.000s
  sys   0m0.004s

  [Regression Potential]

  * We are well aware of the principle of this fix patch - avoiding parsing
  the mount table to improve startup time, so seems infinitely better for
  all cases.

  * This fix from upstream has been backported into Redhat as well, and both
   me and customer have positive test results with automount start timings.

  * What releases to fix

  $ git tag --contains 67e7d613a4b09eeffc57ab44a7acb52027d897b2
  release_5_1_2

  $ rmadison autofs5
   autofs5 | 5.1.1-1ubuntu3 | xenial | all
   autofs5 | 5.1.1-1ubuntu3 | yakkety | all
   autofs5 | 5.1.2-1ubuntu1 | zesty | all
   autofs5 | 5.1.2-1ubuntu1 | artful | all

  $ rmadison -u debian autofs5
   autofs5| 5.1.2-1| unstable| all

  - Ubuntu : Only Xenial and Yakkety are affected.
  Zesty and Artful already has the upstream fix because they are at version
5.1.2.

  - Debian : unstable also has the fix already.

  [Other Info]

  * Redhat [1] also already backported the following patch, see:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1440769

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1699933] Re: ipmi-locate crash on arm64

2017-06-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package freeipmi - 1.4.11-1.1ubuntu4

---
freeipmi (1.4.11-1.1ubuntu4) artful; urgency=medium

  * Use kernel DMI table interface, when available, instead of trolling
/dev/mem to avoid a crash on ARM. LP: #1699933.

Status in freeipmi package in Debian:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Read from /dev/mem and scan DMI tables is dangerous, if /dev/mem is
  not stable to read, it will cause ipmi-locate crash.

  [Test Case]

   * `sudo ipmi-locate` shall not crash

  [Regression Potential]

   * Reading from DMI tables is sysfs is more stable then reading from
  /dev/mem and if DMI tables is not available ipmi-locate will use the
  old way to search in /dev/mem. I believe its low regression risk

  Similiar to bug 1499838 but not 100% same.

  ipmi-locate looks into /dev/mem for DMI tables and crash when DMI
  tables are not in accessible memory region. Kernel > v4.2 provides
  /sys/firmware/DMI/tables/DMI which is a much safer place to read.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Thunar freezes after a period of inactivity.
   * The process has to completely stopped so the user can resume usage.
   * Users have reported the issue to happen more frequently when files have
been modified in the current directory.
   * Several affected users have reported the issue resolved with this patch.

  [Test Case]

   * Open Thunar and wait.
   * Use another application to create files in the current directory.
   * After some time, the application will become unresponsive.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The patch eliminates a deadlock in Thunar's file monitor mechanism, so
regression potential is small.
   * Since Thunar will no longer freeze over time with this fix, other bugs
could become more pronounced.

  [Original Report]

  Thunar keeps constantly freezing when I leave it inactive for a while.

  I haven't seen it freeze while using it, but when I use some other
  application for a while and switch back to Thunar window it is often
  completely frozen and I have to kill it. Zero CPU usage, window not
  responding. This started to happen a couple of weeks ago.

  I have the exact same problem in two different installations, one on
  virtual machine on Windows, other on a Asus Zenbook laptop.

  Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  Thunar 1.6.10-2ubuntu1
