Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
Dell TB16 docking station has issue to use gigabit ethernet. The ethernet
will disconnect unless it's changed to 100Mb/s.

  [Test Case]
Download some big files from the web.
User confirms the patch fixes the issue.

  [Regression Potential]
This patch only effects ASMEDIA's ASM1042A.
The regression potential is low, also limited to the specific device.

  ---

My system contains a Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8153 Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter which is on usb3 bus in my docking station (Dell
TB16) which is attached to my laptop (Dell XPS9550) via Thunderbolt 3.

I get usb related kernel error messages when I initiate a high speed
  transfer (by issuing wget http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current
  /zesty-desktop-amd64.iso) and the download fails.

This does not happened when the Ethernet adapter is connected to a
100Mb/s switch, but only when connected to 1000Mb/s. It also does not
happened with slow traffic (e.g. web page browsing). This is not a new
bug with kernel 4.10, but has been going on since at least 4.7 and
maybe (probably?) since forever. I'm aware of several others with this
configuration (RTL8153 on usb3 behind thunderbolt 3) that have the
same issue. This bug is also not specific to Ubuntu; I also get it on
Arch Linux. I've also tested and seen this bug with several different
  models of thunderbolt 3 docks.

Here are the relevant kernel log messages:

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

   * unattended-upgrades are enabled by default in Ubuntu 16.04 and
  later

   * Currently the following three things happen as a monolithic event:
     - metadata updates: apt update
     - download of updates: apt upgrade --download-only
     - application of updates: apt upgrade

   * For the long running instances, all of the above happens at random
     times throughout the day.

   * If systems were poweredoff / suspended, this happens on boot /
  resume

   * End-users would like to have predictable timing, and control over when
     the updates happen.

Considering all of the above, the following new behavior is proposed
which should address all concerns in question. It combines all the
desired properties from both end-user and mirror perspectives.

  [ Proposed Default Behavior ]

   * Decouple unattended-upgrades application, from apt update

   * apt update:
     - shall be a systemd timer based unit, triggered every 12h with a
random delay of 12h, therefore executed randomly twice a day.
     - if unattened-upgrades (default on), or download-upgreadaeble-packages
are enabled, it should result in updates being downloaded aka
   `apt upgrade --download-only`

   * unattended-upgrades:
     - shall be a separate systemd timer based unit triggered at 6am local
time with a random delay of 1h, therefore executed between 6am and
   7am local time.

   * On boot / resume:
     - if we have missed one, or more, apt update timers,
apt update / download upgrades / unattended-upgrade will happen in
sequence. This may result in mirror spikes, but we do want to secure
cold/stale-booted systems as soon as possible.

  [Test Case]

   * Run system for more than 24h, and check that apt updates were
     automatically executed twice.

   * Check that unattended upgrades were triggered to be applied at
     6am..7am window, if any.

   * Poweroff the machine over the period when apt-get update was
scheduled, poweron and observe that apt-get update / download /
unattended upgrade are all performed on boot.

   * Downgrade systemd to the release version of the package (from
-security). Remove apt periodic stamp files rm /var/lib/apt/periodic/*.
Then run 'sudo systemctl start apt-daily.service'.
Confirm that the systemd package is downloaded, but not upgraded.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The newly proposed behavior is a mix of Pre-xenial behavior of "do
everything at 6am..6:30am window" and the xenial+ behavior of "do
everything at random times throughout the day". If there are specific
deployments that rely on the previous types of behaviour they will be
able to adjust manually the systemd timers with the overrides to be
executed exactly as they wish; or match the .0 release behaviour that
     they prefer.

   * If timers behavior is coded wrongly the proposed behaviour might not be
executed as intended, thus requiring further SRUs to bring us in-line
     with the great expectations.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1684039] Re: iBFT network configuration does not correctly populate PROTO=dhcp in /run/net-*.conf which breaks cloud-init

2017-08-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package open-iscsi - 2.0.874-4ubuntu1

---
open-iscsi (2.0.874-4ubuntu1) artful; urgency=medium

  * Merge with Debian unstable. Remaining changes:
- debian/tests: Add Ubuntu autopkgtests.
- debian/iscsi-network-interface.rules, debian/net-interface-handler,
  debian/open-iscsi.install:
Prevent network interface that contains iscsi root from bouncing
during boot or going down during shutdown.
Integrates with resolvconf and initramfs code that writes
  /run/initramfs/open-iscsi.interface
- debian/open-iscsi.maintscript: clean up the obsolete
iscsi-network-interface upstart job, file on upgrade.
- Let iscsid systemd job run in privileged containers but not in
  unprivileged ones
- Start open-iscsi systemd job when either /etc/iscsi/nodes or
  /sys/class/iscsi_session have content
Based on patch by Nish Aravamudan, thanks! (LP #1576341)
- add IPv6 support
  + add support for IPV6{DOMAINSEARCH,DNS0,DNS1} to net-interface-handler
LP #1621507
  + Source /run/net6-*.conf when needed.
  + debian/extra/initramfs.local-top: handle IPv6 configs being
shipped in DEVICE6 or /run/net6-*.conf in the initramfs, so we
can fill in /run/initramfs/open-iscsi.interface (LP #1621507)
  * Drop:
- d/extra/initramfs.local-top: When booting from iBFT,
set the PROTO= entry in /run/net-*.conf accordingly,
so that other tools, such as cloud-init, can use that
information. (cloud-init fails if the current PROTO=none
is used.) (LP: #1684039) (Closes: #866213)
  [ Fixed in Debian 2.0.874-4 ]
  * d/t/test-open-iscsi.py: drop test_daemon test
- With the updates to the systemd units, the services do not run
  unless iSCSI is configured.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

When booting with iBFT, the network configuration is performed by open-iscsi
as part of initramfs.local-top instead of by klibc-ipconfig. This includes
populating /run/net-*.conf which is consumed among other things, by cloud-init.
Currently no attempt to determine PROTO is made, and PROTO=none is hard coded
into the file which cloud-init does not recognise and crashes out.
Further to this, open-iscsi in the current version (xenial through zesty)
does not correctly parse the iBFT origin into the boot protocol in "iscsistart
-f" and always returns "STATIC". This is fixed upstream.

  [Test Case]

  (1) Setup MAAS 2 environment. Install 16.04 LTS images from the
"Daily" Stream. Check settings and ensure Commissioning kernel is
  16.04 LTS and "xenial (ga-16.04)"

  (2) Enroll a libvirt virtual machine as a machine within the MAAS
  including a SINGLE local disk

  (3) Install the 'ipxe' package on your libvirt machine

  (4) Commission and test and ensure it's otherwise working

  (5) Update MAAS settings and add iscsi_auto to the "Global Kernel
  Parameters"

  (6) You need to build a new open-iscsi package for xenial with the
fix, and then rebuild an initrd for 4.4.0-87-generic with the fix
integrated. An easy way to do that is to deploy the machine, install
the updated (fixed) package and then copy the initrd from
/boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-87-generic to the MAAS server. But you could
also build it on any other xenial machine with that kernel installed.

  (7) Edit the virtual machine config using virt-manager and under the "Boot
Options" enable direct kernel boot, set kernel path to /usr/lib/ipxe/ipxe.lkrn
and the kernel args to (all one line):
  ifconf -c dhcp && sanhook --drive 0x81
iscsi:100.64.0.253::3260:1:iqn.2004-05.com.ubuntu:maas:ephemeral-ubuntu-amd64-ga-16.04-xenial-daily
 ; autoboot

Change 100.64.0.253 to the IP of your MAAS instance on the network
that it uses to PXE boot.

  (8) Try to commission the machine again, you should see it fail if you
watch the console (it will also show failed in MAAS) and you'll
briefly see a message about PROTO=none

  (9) Update the initrd on the MAAS server:
  cd
/var/lib/maas/boot-resources/current/ubuntu/amd64/ga-16.04/xenial/daily/
  mv boot-initrd boot-initrd.orig
  cp (PATHMA

Bug description:
The ubuntu-advantage-tools package is a bit odd as it was first landed
in precise to support the ESM effort inside canonical. [0] In order
to bring this package up to date across other series in ubuntu, it has
been recommended by the Ubuntu Foundations team to land into trusty
next, then forward-port pocket-copy to all supported series until we
  get to the devel release.

  The version here:

  https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/ubuntu-advantage-
  script/releases/tag/v2

... has all on-disk bits correctly working, for all series, but no-ops
on any release other than precise (ESM is only for "unsupported" LTS
releases as it were). This is a request to land ubuntu-advantage-
tools into trusty, then pocket-copy it to supported series of ubuntu
  once that is finished.

  [Impact]

   * Allow ubuntu-advantage users to access the extended security
maintenance script with a simple command line tool. This script needs
to hit precise machines and be easy for ubuntu-advantage customers to
enable, thus basefiles was chosen as a home.

  [Test Case]

   * Run ubuntu-advantage, it should print out help

   * Run sudo ubuntu-advantage enable (without sudo it will warn
you), but you need to be an ubuntu-advantage customer to get that
token. In the end, the script simply adds and removes an
  /etc/apt/sources.list.d entry.

   * Verify that the MOTD does not contain any mention of ubuntu-
advantage esm or precise and its end of life

   * Verify that ubuntu-advantage enable-esm  installs needed
dependencies:
- create the following file and its contents to have apt not install
recommended packages by default:
  $ cat /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/no-recommends
  APT::Install-Recommends "false";
- remove ca-certificates and apt-transport-https:
  $ sudo apt remove ca-certificates apt-transport-https
- run sudo ubuntu-advantage enable-esm and verify that the two
removed packages are reinstalled

   * you can contact me (d...@canonical.com) if you would like a token
  for test purposes.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Low, this is a new script, not included in any automated startup
  paths.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

* smartshine has an insufficient list of dependencies, so users
might end up in a situation where required dependencies happens to not
  be installed.

  [Test Case]
  1. Install smartshine
  2. Verify that python-cairo and python-gi are installed.
  3. Verify smartshine starts without any dialogs with errors.
  4. Attempt to uninstall either python-cairo or python-gi (try one at a time).
When attempting to uninstall either libarary, smartshine should be listed as
"will also be removed".

Before the fix, both libraries could be removed, at which point
smartshine would print an error message in the terminal.

  [Regression Potential]
There should be no changes in package itself, only additional dependencies
have been added. Thus, more packages are installed.

I was clicking around in the application and found bug 1702367 though,
which is a bit more severe than this one. Even though it is possible
to run the application, it won't do much. Note that this occurs prior
to the patch, so it is not a regression.

  [Original report]

In Ubuntu 16.04.2 when is installed smartshine from the official repository
it does not start.
If the app is started by the GUI there is no error , if the app is started by
the terminal is shown a generic error "An error occured. Python or one of its
sub modules is absent..."
The error can be solved simply installing python-cairo from the official
repository.
ps: sorry for English not perfectly correct

Bug description:
I've been running some scale tests for LXD and what I've noticed is
that "zfs clone" gets slower and slower as the zfs filesystem is
  getting busier.

It feels like "zfs clone" requires some kind of pool-wide lock or
something and so needs for all operations to complete before it can
  clone a new filesystem.

A basic LXD scale test with btrfs vs zfs shows what I mean, see below
  for the reports.

The test is run on a completely dedicated physical server with the
pool on a dedicated SSD, the exact same machine and SSD was used for
  the btrfs test.

The zfs filesystem is configured with those settings:
   - relatime=on
   - sync=disabled
   - xattr=sa

So it shouldn't be related to pending sync() calls...

The workload in this case is ultimately 1024 containers running busybox as
their init system and udhcpc grabbing an IP.
The problem gets significantly worse if spawning busier containers, say a
full Ubuntu system.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

compute-image-packages is provided by Google for installation within
guests that run on Google Compute Engine. It is a collection of tools
and daemons, packaged as gce-compute-image-packages, that ensure that
the Ubuntu images published to GCE run properly on their platform.

Cloud platforms evolve at a rate that can't be handled in six-month
increments, and they will often develop features that they would like
to be available to customers who don't want to upgrade from earlier
Ubuntu releases. As such, updating gce-compute-image-packages to more
recent upstream releases is required within all Ubuntu releases, so
they continue to function properly in their environment.

With this release we also add a new binary package to the suite -
google-compute-engine-oslogin which is for a future feature of using
OS Login on GCE VM instances.

  [Test Case]

When a new version of gce-compute-image-packages is uploaded to
-proposed, the following will be done:

   * an image based on -proposed will be built for GCE and published to the
ubuntu-os-cloud-devel project
   * the CPC team will write new automated tests to cover new testable
functionality (if any) in the new package
   * the automated testing that the CPC team normally runs against GCE images
before they are published will be run against the -proposed image
   * the GCE team will be asked to validate that the new package addresses the
issues it is expected to address, and that the image passes their internal
image validation.

If all the testing indicates that the image containing the new package
is acceptable, verification will be considered to be done.

  [Other Information]

This bug is used for tracking of releasing the new upstream version
for all supported series, as per the approved policy mentioned in the
  following MRE:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * The package contains misleading documentation mentioning the use of
/etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf for rfcomm setup while the support for
config file has been dropped after 14.04 release. I have directly
received a question about it from a user mislead by the documentation.

  * Additionally deprecated -f option is still used in legacy upstart
/etc/init/bluetooth.conf. Actually this does not seem longer required
  due to upstart being removed.

  [Test Case]

   * Install bluez.

   * Look for misleading rfcomm.conf mentions in
  /etc/init/bluetooth.conf, /usr/share/doc/bluez/README.Debian.gz

  [Regression Potential]

   * This is mostly a documentation correction, however if somebody
still depends bluetooth started with Ubuntu 16.04+ by upstart (or
possibly some kind of upstart compatibility in systemd, is that even
possible?) he/she may end up with bluetooth not being started. This
  seems highly unlikely.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug description:

Support for config files has been dropped upstream in 2012 (however
version shipped with Trusty still supports it), but the latest
versions (including Xenial and Zesty) still mention it in the docs and
  in the legacy /etc/init/bluetooth.conf file.

Additionally the /etc/init/bluetooth.conf don't seem necessary these
days. In fact it has been dropped by Debian already.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1709029] Re: Tests failing on xenial due to missing fakeroot command

2017-08-08 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Currently the xenial ubuntu-image package fails autopkgtests due to the
+ missing fakeroot dependency. Xenial has an older mkfs.ext4 that does not
+ support a parameter that all the other series are using. Because of
+ that, fakeroot is not really used on this release as by default the
+ first call of mkfs.ext4 which is assuming the existence of the '-d'
+ option is supposed to fail and then u-i is moving on to using a fallback
+ method of copying rootfs contents into the filesystem. To the first call
+ of the mkfs.ext4 call we have recently added fakeroot (due to a security
+ vulnerability discovered).
+
+ The failure of calling mkfs.ext4 with an unrecognized parameter and
+ calling fakeroot mkfs.ext4 when fakeroot is not installed both generate
+ different errors (the first one causes run() to exit with error and the
+ second one rises a FileNotFoundError exception). We can easily support
+ both cases, but then we are encountering code coverage issues - as in
+ the best case we want to have the same code for all supported series.
+ It's not easy to mock this case in unit tests as in theory we will never
+ be able to reach this FileNotFoundError branch on non-xenial systems. It
+ basically requires a lot of unnecessary work that's not bringing any
+ real merits.
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ Just dropping this part of the delta and adding the fakeroot dependency
+ fixes all problems with little effort.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Make sure that the xenial autopkgtests pass.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ None - really. We're only adding the fakeroot dependency that is
+ installed on all the other series for the same ubuntu-image version
+ already. Installing this dependency does not change anything in the
+ logic of ubuntu-image - the only time it is used is for the first
+ mkfs.ext4 command which always fails (due to being too old to support
+ the required options).

quite often the tests time out on armhf. Maybe this is due to running
inside a lxc container, rather than in a full VM.

Could you please consider disabling rebuild test on armhf? Or for
example lowering its parallelism during adt tests.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1709224] Re: libvirt lxc can't stop all process when destroy vm.

2017-08-08 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi yuanzhicao,
thank you for your report and your analysis to a suggested fix.

The fix you refer to was released in 1.3.2, setting later releases to
fix-released.

In general Libvirt's lxc support is not of focus, I'd highly recommend
using lxd for system containers which is far more stable in my
experience (Setting prio low to reflect that).

I'll try to quickly come up with a ppa to test for you and get back
here.

lxc: don't try to hide parent cgroups inside container
  -

Cgroups inside container does't hide parent, so the process of container can
change it own cgroup to another cgroup.
lxc destroy process by read cgroup tasks file,if process change it own
cgroup,it can't destroy container process normally.
